so i did a google. here are the answers i found in an old yahoo discussion forum. the answers are not directed to me.

however, feel free to add your experiences..

i also note that the interchange has largely ruined the idea of tiring your opponent out.

Ok firstly it is hard to say having not seen you play, one thing I will say is train hard, if you train hard you are fitter which means you make more contests and therefore are more likely to have a chance of getting a possesion.

Understand your strengths whether you are an in and under player or a fringe player, if you are a fringe player you must also work on in and under skills however you know that you are better off being the player who receives the football from the in and under player and you can deliver the ball well to your leading forwards.

As i said not knowing yo makes it very difficult but the main thing i would say is Fitness, if you are fitter than your opponent you will be in the open more because you an run off him and you will also make more contests so you are pretty much guaranteed to see the reward with your possessions.

try getting into a midfield position or be a follower.

if you are already in those positions and your finding it hard to get some, then you are in the wrong spot on the field!!

A good tip - when u dispose of the ball always back it up. So that means running through to even the next pack or stoppage. Requires alot of fitness and determination but you'll reap the rewards.

Read the play and watch what your teammates are doing, rather than just watching the ball. After a while you will be able to predict where the ball is gonna end up and get yourself into a favourable position to receive the ball!
Also, make sure you make good use of the ball when you have it. If you waste possession, your teammates may choose another option over you when moving the ball forward!

- Get into the midfield more, try and follow the ball.
- If you follow the ball you will eventually get a posession, since you are close and hopefully will be in a good position to recieve the ball.
- Set Yourself up so that you are in a decent position, being behind a really tall player wont help. Let yourself be free from the rest and dont bunch up with the rest of the blokes so that you can easily recieve an uncontested kick.
- Run Harder, be on the ball.

will give you two tips that i always passed onto the young fellas i coached, they might sound simple but they are effective.

1- your voice, it is very important to call for the ball, not just call but tell your team mate where you are etc, 'backdoor' 'front door' etc, the louder you scream for the footy the more chance you will get your team mates attention, you have to demand the footy.

2- another simple tip but it works, when on a lead, wave your arms and point to the direction you want the ball to be delivered to, at the same time screaming your lungs out, your team mate has to give you the footy.

There are plenty of tips but it's a bit hard over the internet, just focus on the ball and want it, you'll find if you really want the ball, you'll get it.

good luck with your footy mate.

Try and be aware of your current positioning on the field and if you work as a team up or down the ground creating space or running off your team mates to get that extra possesion and once you have grabbed the extra possesion work your way down the field to grab another one, but remember you have to be logical and aware of space and other team mates.

Just keep running as hard as you can to tire out your opponent.
A perfect example is the recently retired Robert Harvey.

the interchange has ruined that idea...

Ask your coach!

That's what they're there for.

i dont play. i just thought others would like to express their ideas as a source for people to read. there would be lots of informed people on this site that can relate their experience.

Fitness.

If you're shit and don't have a footy brain, you'll be running so much that you'll get some possies.

If you can read the play and positioning well, you'll be able to get the ball. But if you want it more, you'll have to be running around a lot more.

Footy is a ludicrously simple game.

If you're playing midfield, keep on the move around stoppages. Don't stand there waiting for the ruckman to tap the ball down to you, have him tap it to where you want to go and run onto it. Easier to get the ball in congestion, you get a possession.

Other than that, as has been said, fitness. You work around the ground, demand the ball, get into good spots, you'll get the ball.

Possessions are overrated these days anyway but if its really important play half back in a good side.

A more serious response would be to a) get awesome at clearances which is a combination of reflexes, coordination and experience of knowing where to run. b) get good at spreading - easiest way to get the ball is to get on your own, easiest way to get on your own is to spread good.

Most of all though it just comes down to experience of knowing where to run and the best teacher for that is plenty of match practice.

absolutely. i see this.

All my coaches ever told me was this: The harder you work for them, the easier they come. We have really fit guys that just don't get the pill because they only work so hard...whereas guys that are less talented but work as hard as possible rack up the tackles and possies.

Supporting people after you dispose of the pill as well by running, sheparding, spreading after a disposal and generally running in packs help rack up possies.

for someone like me that hasnt grown up with the game, that is invaluable insight. :thumbsu:

to those that have grown up with the game may think its an obvious thing to do. to those people i say, dont assume fore-knowledge.

Be Gary Ablett

when I speak to my midfielders about how to get more possessions I always use Gablett Jnr as an example. If you watch him closely he never stops running the whole game. He is also the one in motion at each and every stoppage.

the key to getting lots of pill is fairly obvious. As someone else said, it is a pretty simple game. If you are at a lot of contests you will get a lot of possessions.

Depends on the position you are playing and whether your coach wants you to play a tagging role or not. If not a tagging role and in a quite free position (wing, centre, rover, ruck rover) just have your footy smarts about you and predict where the ball is going to end up. If you see the opposition has a stacked backline and is heavily sided to one wing hang to that side so if the ball drops you can be there and be used as a link up player sending it back into the forward line and stuff. I did that for years on end playing as a ruck rover and got an absolute heap of it.

Run harder, get to more contests.

Say you're a slightly less than average footballer who wins 40% of their 50-50 contests.

Get to 50 such contests in a game, you'll get 20 touches.

build up fitness, therefore you will be able to rack up more possesions in a game
you still have to work hard though

Yes obviously fitness is a key! however, you can be a fit as you want, but if you don't work the angles, run the lines, use your voice, run to the right spots then fitness isn't going to help!!!
My suggestion is run with your best player at training and watch where they run and ask questions. Pick up where to position yourself around the ground.
Tim Schmidt from the Sydney Swans wasn't the fittest person in the side and racked up 62 touches and 3 goals one game in Canberra!!
