Opinion How will our back 6 evolve?

Maybe add Seedsman and/or O'Brien to that if you see them as defenders players than wingmen.

What back 6 do you make out of that? And who are the depth players for each position?

In round 1, 2014?

And how will it develop beyond that?

Who will replace Shaw?

Who will take the Kickouts?

Sharenberg, Keeffe, Seedsman/Sidebottom/Oxley

Sharenberg, Sidey, Oxley and Seed seem like the most efficient by foot on that list other than Reid. Keeffe is also quite a good kick, which is why I'm happy to see him on the halfback line. However, if we are switching frequently in 2014 it will be difficult watching Brown in every chain of play, Keeffe would be preferable but it really depends on match ups.

Tooves is the only player their that we could say has hit his peak. Still massive upside in the Seed, who I think will really develop his defensive game as well as Marley. People need to remember how little Keeffe and Brown have played together, they'll only improve. Scharenberg will come in and play majority of the season IMO if he can have a strong pre-season despite his foot injuries

I was going to start a thread on this. It's a good topic. I think we are about to see a real shift in personnel back there this year. For so long we structured up like this:

FB: ---Toovey---Brown---O'Brien---
HB: ---Shaw------Reid---Maxwell---

We have seen Shaw traded out. I believe we will see Reid forward. Maxwell is nearing the end and should be depth rather than best 22 this year in my opinion. O'Brien is being utilised further afield these days.

So what does that mean? We have seen a pretty rough period with our defensive unit since Buckley took over. We have had trouble with our kick-out strategy. We have had trouble rebounding. We have also seen our defense given less protection from our midfield.

This year needs to be see a rebuild back there. We need to see that unit given time to gel together and likely a bit of patience while that happens.

We really need to boost our footskills back there. I also think in defense more than anywhere on the ground height is really important. We need a few guys that can play on smalls but still command the air. With the recruitment of Scharenberg and Langdon plus the elevation of Oxley I think the club see this as a need as well.

I posted this backline in the best 22 thread but this is how I see things moving forward:

The club is clearly very confident in Keeffes ability long term. I think he will take over from Brown at full back who will play a more advanced role at CHB. With Shaw's departure we have a massive hole to fill in terms of rebound but it offers us some interesting possibilities. We can now go for a taller type with more incisive kicking skills. I think between Toovey, Oxley and Scharenberg we have a fantastic group of mediums that can play tall or small, can do a shut down role (Toovey) can intercept mark (Oxley and Scharenberg) and offer plenty of rebound (Oxley and Scharenberg). Langdon and Seedsman would also be in consideration. Williams has really cemented himself as a hard nut shut down defender and gives us a hard edge back there. It will be interesting to see what game time guys like Armstrong, Sinclair and Ramsay get but I like the above balance better.

Williams and Toovey are really the lock-down players on small forwards, even though Toovey is 189 and can play on a medium. Sinclair is depth there and I hold hope for Armstrong, Broomhead and Ramsay.

I think we have a number of players who can switch between defence as outlet players and wing in Seedsman, Scharenberg, Young, O'Brien and Oxley.

The tall defenders are pretty rock solid there but if we get the right mix down back I think we can pin it down with Keeffe and Brown.

I'd be going:

B Toovey - Brown - Williams
HB Seedsman - Keeffe - Scharenberg

With a Young, Oxley or O'Brien rotating off a wing.

Two speedy lock down defenders in Williams and Toovey, one negating tall in Brown, a creative and defensive tall in Keeffe, and two outlet players in Scharenberg and Seedsman.

I think it's too clunky having Brown, Reid and Keeffe there, unless we play Sydney or GWS which is a bit of an exception.

I like two lock downs in Williams and Toovey, Scharenberg who can play a defensive role as well as release, Seedsman who can take it on and dispose and our two talls. I think people are under-rating Keeffe as both a tall defender and disposer.

He's good but I think Keefe is a better player. It all depends on whether we play Reid up forward or not, but having all three of them down there is probably going to be too top heavy against most opposition teams. Having Brown or Keefe running around in the seconds isn't a great situation though, especially when I think Frost is going to be pretty solid as well.

You are ignoring the fact that a high level key forward is far more valuable than a high level key back. A 50-60 goal key forward who isn't necessarily AA at the position is IMO more valuable than an AA key back. Especially when you have more than adequate cover.

IMO the drop off from Reid to our next best key forward after Cloke is much greater than the drop off from Reid to Keefe. In some situations purely as a defender, Keefe is better than Reid for me. And Keefe is an excellent kick who should only continue to develop his attacking game. If you are looking at intercept marks, Keefe does it pretty well already, but Scharenberg is going to be a beast at that skill in the AFL. Corey Enright/Harry Taylor like I reckon.

Cloke needs a quality foil to be at his most effective IMO. And that person is Reid until we draft/develop another high quality tall forward.

Certainly the drafting of Scharenberg gives us a great deal more flexibility with where Reid plays in the coming years. I still like him as a defender though for the intercept marking and rebound kicking.
