Has the potential to be the most indiginified moment in Australian politics.

It's the one thing i hope will tarnish what people are saying is his "legacy" as "the best since menzies"

people always remember how you go out, i fail to see how a man who has surrounded himself with downer, abbott, ruddock, tuckey, nelson and andrews in his career could possibly be gracious in defeat.

seriously, it has the potential to be the most defiant, petty and typical moment in his career. if anything he should get all the aformentioned ministers to all have a respective dig too - well except nelson because he's going to be the opposition leader soon, ROFL

Tuckey isn't really a Howard favourite.

He'll be right if he loses. Just tell us what a good shape he is leaving the nation in compared to when he took office.

On a related matter, did Kennett ever make a concession speech? He lost within the parliament its self, didn't he? He didn't lose in the formation of the parliament.

Kennett didn't lose until about 3 weeks later IIRC (after a seat in Geelong which was won by <20 votes) so i don't know if he made a speech.

What time will the concession speech be? I'd say before 9pm.

He didn't really even lose then. It was when the three independents decided they would support a Bracks budget that he lost. Not sure when that was.

Ooh yes. After seeing Amanda Vanstone screech "What's he playing at?" after Latham was such a good sport in his concession speech on election night I can only imagine how bad they'll be when they lose.

Latham's speech, much like his whole career as Opposition Leader, was pitiful.

My bet is that he will pretend to be a gracious loser & wish Rudd all the best.......he's spent so long pretending to be a decent bloke, he wouldn't want to let the mask slip.

Then he'll go back to Kirribilli, Janette will kick his scrawny arse & he'll kick the cat.

I suspect you're right. He will be gracious, and to a degree he'll be pretending to be gracious, which is fine because I can't really imagine any political leader who gets defeated feeling genuinely warm and positive towards their opposition.

Are you suggesting that Keating, Kimbo and Latham were genuine in their "graciousness" during their concession speeches, but Howard will not be?

I imagine they'd have been seething underneath, and I imagine Howard will be much the same. Let's be honest ,12 years on and Keating still has not got the bitterness of defeat out of his system.

1999 election loss

The Liberals lost 13 seats to Labor at the 1999 election, most of them in regional centres such as Ballarat and Bendigo. The final result in the Legislative Assembly was: Labor, 42 seats; the Liberals and Nationals, 43; with three independents holding the balance of power. Independents Russell Savage and Susan Davies were joined by a third Independent, Craig Ingram. Negotiations began between Kennett's Liberal party and the three independents. While Kennett acceded to their demands, his perceived poor treatment of Savage and Davies in the previous Parliament meant that they held a position that they would never agree to support a Liberal Party Minority Government while Kennett remained leader. The Liberal negotiators did not reveal this to their Party and Labor was ultimately successful in winning their support to form a government, after signing a Charter of Good Government, pledging to restore services to rural areas, and promising Parliamentary reforms.

The defeat of the Kennett Government was almost totally unexpected. Kennett's supporters urged the Liberal Party to force a vote of 'no confidence' on the floor of the Parliament in a last-ditch effort to force Savage, Davies and Ingram to support the Liberal Government; however with the Liberal Party divided on Kennett's future role, Kennett resigned as Leader of the Liberal Party and from Parliament, saying he wished to have no further involvement in politics. The consequent Burwood by-election was won by the Labor Party.

If Howard loses next weekend we won't even see him give a speech.

Costello will become the new temporary leader and he will talk and we will never see/hear of Howard again.

That was a really interesting turn of events.

One would have thought that the independents would have backed a coalition government because (a) they had 1 more seat than Labor and (b) they all came from traditionally conservative electorates and probably had coalition preferences to thank for their seats. In light of this, it's perhaps no surprise that they all have since been replaced by conservative candidates (except for Ingram). But as was pointed out, it appeared that the Libs would not have been happy with a minority govt. whilst Labor was.

Can anyone recall how the polls had this one because I do remember that the result was extremely unexpected?

Should be a good night, the more sitting liberal members the networks have in on air roles, the better.

Agreed just to see them squirm. Watching these smug liberal w***ers on the 9 telecast the last few years has been excruciating.

He should be marvelling how he pulled the wool over using just smple tactics for so long.
