How'd you become a Suns fan?

I didn't take much of an interest in football until about 2010

I live in Adelaide, and Port weren't too flash at the time. The rest of my family and most of my mates barrack for the Crows, but they share a mob mentality that kind of disgusts me, fair weather as a footy fan could possibly come - only take an interest when the teams on a hot streak, no interest in neutral games, don't rate any opposition players, can't even identify grounds or show an awareness of who is playing who!!! Drives me up the wall.

So I jumped on the Suns as soon as they came into the league.

We were a RL family and didn't follow AFL at all.

In 2011 my son pestered me to allow (pay) for him to do Auskick at school as some of his mates were. He enjoyed it, so I signed him up to play club AFL, as in his age group AFL is played on a Saturday and RL is played on a Sunday in that area. He played both.

Initially he didn't want to keep playing AFL as he was restricted by zones, but in Junior RL he could run all over the field. By then i had decided that AFL had a better culture than RL, and was more suitable a game to play for life. So to get him to buy into the AFL game, I started buying him AFL guernseys, footy cards, and took him to a couple of Suns games, and got FOX Footy..

I could have chosen the Lions as we lived in Moreton Bay, equal distance to both venues. I chose the Suns as I believe they have a bright future and as such will be a team to keep him interested in the game.

Now he is old enough to play without zones, he has virtually dropped RL in favour of AFL. He follows the Suns, we go to games, we watch game replays on FOX, even before school...

Now my eldest daughter plays as well, but follows the Lions. She played RL as well but now loves AFL instead.

Did it take much convincing?

No, not much convincing. I liked Gary Ablett (growing up as a Hawthorn fan, you learn quickly to have a begrudging respect for most Geelong players). I also liked the idea of supporting a club with the makings of a rich history and warm culture.
