I understand that he has pretty much been our saviour for the whole series, and he has been the last person to criticise at the moment, but as an Australian supporter, i'm getting worried.

Hussey hasn't made a score for about three innings. Yes there are 10 other people in strife that should be of concern, but this worries me in two aspects.

Aspect 1: Hussey has been the only batsman who has not only played his role, but completely exceeded expectations (i'd say watson and haddin have also with the bat). If Hussey's batting is to either deteriorate or waver, we are in big trouble

Aspect 2: With Hussey in such good nick, and our selectors being completely useless, this will probably mean that Hussey will be in the side for as long as he likes, regardless of form. As a country who really is in need of rebuilding, Australia really can't afford to carry someone. Hussey can't slump like he was pre ashes.

Am i overreacting?

Hussey looked like a new player in the first 3 test's. But every match he has came in to bat with so much expectation on him, it was like he needs to deliver because we are 5/135. That cant be good for a 35 year old. Ofcourse we couldnt expect him to deliver every single match. I reckon if Hussey came in at 5/300- in Syd or Melb he would of made a big score.

Yes, Hussey hasn't exactly been brilliant the last few innings but we can hardly fault him, it's not his fault all the other batsmen can't hit the bloody pill. It is true, though, that it can't be healthy for the bloke but as long as the selectors want him and he wants to keep pulling on the baggy green, he's got my vote. It's clear how much he loves playing for his country.

If the rest of the team worked half as hard on their game as hussey does they would be performing alot better.

Instead they just sit back an relax while hes one of the first in the nets an last to leave every day.

He loves cricket an even at 35 is still desperate to do everything possible to help australia.

def overreaction so we need to keep in all the underperforming players who havent done anything for over a year an get rid of the only one who does anything because we cant afford to carry him if he has any form slumps???

Maybe the rest need to spend as much time practicing an care as much as Hussey so that if hussey has any form slumps the team can carry him for once.
Hes been saving our ass nearly all year in ODIs an was even doing it in 20\20s
Got to see the replay of the semi final from icc 20\20 worldcup the other day still unbelievable what hussey did in that match.

Keep him until his form drops off for too long

Imagine if he was dropped before this series as many fools wanted.
we would of been so much more pathetic

I wouldn't have blamed him if he just thought 'eff the lot of you' in the last couple of tests after the nonsense that has been going on above him in the batting order. There is only so many times you can play rescuer.

He won't be around much longer in the test team, I shouldn't think.

as others have said above, you're expecting too much of him. Considering he can in at 4 for not many in just about every innings, he has had a bloody good series. Give the man a break!

That said, I think he she call it a day from tests. Gotta make room for Punter in the late middle order.

Thanks for your services Huss, you West Aussie legend! :D :thumbsu:

Let's not rewrite history here.

Hussey should have been dropped. No ifs or buts about it. He had been terrible for two years, constantly having one big innings every 5-6 test matches to save his spot only to go back to sucking straight away. The figures support this. Two years in a row averaging under 40.

Obviously, he had a great series. Australia (and Hussey) were lucky he came good or it could have gone very ugly. But let's not act as if the selectors were geniuses. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

We'll have to see if this resurgence is just a final purple patch or if he can actually carry it on. Personally I would have liked to see him retire after this test. It wouldn't have been a great send off, team wise, but personally he'd go down as basically the only batsman to really stand up in a horrible series.

As it is he's going to be 36 by the time we play our next test match, and we desperately need to rejuvenate that middle order.

When you keep coming in at 3 for about 100 you will fail more than often. He has carreid this batting lineup for the whole series and probably feeling the pinch a little. No need to worry about Hussey, the only player to show any leadership all series.

When you have got Hughes, Smith and Clarke batting in our top 6, Hussey is probably the least of our worries.

Can i just make it clear that I am obviously not suggesting he be dropped now, that is completely absurd. All that i am suggesting, is that i am concerned that it will be up to Hussey when he decides to retire, which is very dangerous. It will be a setback if his form drops and he is kept in the side due to his Ashes series. Also, if he does retire in the near future, is our country capable of replacing him at number 5

Jesus, where's the whatthe****amireading.jpg image when you need it.

Certainly our player of the series (and even then, really only had half a great series), but I think now would be the perfect time for him to retire. I don't really think there's much more he can do for us.

That semi-final v Pakistan has him set fair even if he wants to retire. He's gone for (I think) nearly 1 and a half million in the IPL.

Edit: No that was his bro. He's got 425,000.

I'd like him to retire from test cricket, not the short formats, he's still ace in those.

In test cricket, this has been a grand Indian summer for him.

I think he'll be like Punter though and have to be dragged through the door, clinging on to the frame with white knuckles screaming, 'Tendulkar is my model'.

I'd prefer the opposite. Give his body (and mind) a chance to rest so he can focus on the important stuff.

If Ponting stays in the side as the senior leader than Hussey must go. Great way for him to finish but it's a spike in otherwise declining form. He will not be in the side the next realistic chance we have to win back the Ashes in 4 years (no chance in 2 years in England) so him being in the side serves no purpose.
He can play the cheap stuff like ODI's and 20/20's but Test cricket needs fresh faces.

Considering he's put himself up for another 3 years at IPL, the short formats will be his bread and butter for some time to come.

He's fantastic as one day cricket, the sense of security he must give the line-up knowing that he's coming in at 6/7 and can keep his head and play to the situation, unlike some of our less flexible players, is huge.

His form has been in pieces for the last 2 years in test cricket, that is why I referred to this series as an Indian summer.

He's still serviceable, but should now be a series by series prospect. I'd be inclined to drop him to six to bat with the tail, and top order.

Only current player in team who knows how to bat in partnerships.

A far better test line up would look like this:

1. Maddinson- play a young guy, take a risk.
2. Khawaja- I'd like to see us forge a new and fresh opening pair, Usman has a technique and temperament.
3. Watson- Best in the top three, has the game to bat 3.
4. Haddin- Relieve him of the glove and let him be a bat. Watch the scores come.
5. Clarke (c)- Needs runs and will get them soon. Captaincy will be better than most reckon
6. Hussey- Bats well with the tail, and can mentor younger players.
7. Paine (wk)- Adds youth and enthusiasm. Good age to enter as keeper.
8. O'Keefe/ Hauritz- Both these guys should have played before Doherty and Beer, shambolic selections. Good spinners who can bat at 8.
