Chances are we wouldn't have drafted Palmer, and used Mayne's pick on someone else. We wouldn't have begun turning our list over, and what young players we do have wouldn't be getting played. Our midfield would be even worse considering who our best is in there now. And the mental weakness such a part of Connolly's coaching, would ensure we would get absolutely smashed this year.
We didn't have to win the flag last year for him to stay, we just had to make finals, and look like a finals team. We never did.
There was never any replenishment plan with the list, apart from getting more old guys in there under Cuddles. He was only interested in the short term, and his entire strategy was based around that. It was going to come to an end eventually. He just wasn't here when it dawned...
That mental weakness you refer to would have had us further up the ladder than we are now.
To say we wouldn't have kept our picks is speculation at best and quite poor at that. By the end of the season it was obvious that new blood was needed, even to the most ill informed. We had kept our picks each alternate year before.
The same man who picked Palmer and Mayne would have made that decision so why would that be any different?
