Big Docker likely to face Eagles in match sim, captain ready for season start

FREMANTLE expects to have ruck Sean Darcy available for its match simulation against West Coast on February 21 after the big man suffered a calf strain at training last week.

Darcy completed the first 20 minutes of match practice last Friday before heading inside with a "mild to moderate" calf strain, putting him in doubt for the club's main intraclub match on February 13 in Bunbury.

The 27-year-old continued his rehab on Thursday morning before heading inside during the Dockers' main training session, with executive general manager of football Joe Brierty expecting the big man to recover in time for the club's tune up against the Eagles in 16 days' time.

"It's probably a mild to moderate calf strain with a timeframe of around two weeks, so whether he's available for our second intraclub, we would expect him to be ready for the West Coast game," Brierty told AFL.com.au.

Darcy's availability for at least one pre-season game ahead of the round one clash against Geelong will be important as the team looks to settle its ruck structure and allow Luke Jackson to play more minutes as a ground-level midfielder.

Brierty said the Dockers' list was in good shape ahead of the main pre-season hitouts, with forward Sam Sturt the only long-term concern as he targets a return from his anterior cruciate ligament injury in July.

Half-back Cooper Simpson has a minor hip issue that he is managing, while developing ruck Aiden Riddle suffered an ankle injury in a recent match simulation that will sideline him for three weeks.

Captain Alex Pearce is being managed carefully in the lead-up to the season after his stress-related setbacks last year, sitting out last Friday's match simulation and watching on from the sidelines on Thursday.

"Alex is a loading thing. We obviously had the stress issues with his leg last year and we just want to be really diligent," Brierty said.

"He's got such a strong base with the length of his career to date, and we feel that we can get the right work into him and he can be up and going.

"Pre-season is long, and our priority is to mitigate risk with him. He pulled up a little bit sore after a couple of sessions and also had to fly to Melbourne … so we'll manage him where we need to in the coming weeks.

"He'll be ready to go for the start of the season."

The Dockers take on Adelaide at Rushton Park in Mandurah on February 28 in the AAMI Community Series before launching their season against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on March 14.

Don’t you worry, the Big TX will be ready for the season. As his buddy, I’ve been personally involved with his extra training sessions. We’ve been studying the Freo playbook and eating Texas brisket and burnt ends.

He’s locked in and ready to carry the load after paper mache Darcy inevitably tears a hamstring off the bone getting out of bed.

Darcy was certainly quite restricted today and did very little, Riddle only did marginally more, must have been a nasty ankle injury he suffered a few weeks ago. Simpson was flying, can’t believe he will be in rehab for much longer.

So, back in 2018, the USAFL held their National tournament near me in Wisconsin. I volunteered to sell meat pies, drinks, etc in exchange for free entry and a cool USAFL t-shirt that said "volunteer" on the back. Super awesome. 😂

You may remember that 2018 is the year Cox had that three goal finals game against the Tigers where the MCG was chanting "USA, USA, USA". The Pies go on to lose the GF to some other a$$hat team (can't remember who. 😝) at the end of September and two weeks later the USAFL finals were held in Mid-Oct.

Fresh from his GF loss, the one and only Mason Cox was there watching some games. Dude stood out like a lighthouse on a cliff. He towered over everyone. I'm not sure if most people didn't know who he was but there wasn't like a huge number of people asking for selfies or saying hi as he was watching the games (I think he brother was playing at the time, but I could be wrong).

I knew this this would be my one and only time where I would see a real-life footballer in person. Y'all get to see them play and go to trainings and see them around town. Not me.

So, of course, I mustered up the courage to go up to him and say "Hey man, I'm a freo supporter but I'd still love a pic with you if you don't mind." He snickered and was totally cool about it. Me in my Freo beanie and him in his Collingwood beanie. I told him congrats on a great season and he thanked me. Just watching him interact with other people, he seemed totally cool with everyone and was willing to take pics if people wanted or sign things. Seemed like a "ripper of a fella" as you said freo84.

He's obviously gotten a lot of crap hurled at him from opposing fans (and rightfully so at times), but my gut says that some of his antics are a bit for show and theater. I've read that he went out of his way to build relationships with everyone at Collingwood from the equipment people to the secretaries to the grounds crew. It sounds like he's doing similar things now at Freo. If you're on the "f*** him" side of the fence, you might want to give him a chance. Now that he's in the purple, you might enjoy what he brings to the table.

I was stoked when he came to fremantle. I can now say I've met a Freo player! haha!

So, even though Taylor stole my favorite player and buddy from the last couple years 😂, I'll be promoting Big Coxy every chance I get. You'll all be as big of fans I am of him by season's end!

Fremantle defender Jordan Clark has been involved in an injury scare just four days before he’s due to represent Western Australia in AFL Origin.

Clark was taking part in match simulation at the end of Fremantle training in Cockburn on Tuesday when he suddenly left the field with the doctor looking dejected.

He walked around the boundary line from the back pocket and at one stage covered his face with his hat as an assistant coach filled his spot on the field

Clark didn’t take any further part in the session, but walked out in bare feet as the players had nearly finished, spoke to a staff member and then returned indoors

Clark had a career-best season for Fremantle in 2025 and was selected in the All-Australian team.

The running half-back is set to give WA massive drive thanks to his ability to penetrate, and all eyes will be on him over the coming days to see if this incident prevents him from pulling on the state jumper.

WA has four Fremantle players in the team with Luke Jackson, Shai Bolton and Jaeger O’Meara also selected. Midfielder Caleb Serong will play for Victoria and Dockers coach Justin Longmuir will be an assistant to Dean Cox.

The Dockers will play an intraclub game in Bunbury on Friday, so Tuesday’s session provided them with an opportunity to prepare for that clash. It also gave the Origin players a final opportunity to focus on their club commitments before turning their attention to representing their states

Saturday will be the first AFL Origin game since 1999 and a sell out crowd with pack Optus Stadium for the clash.

Players will begin arriving in Perth on Wednesday. They will hold open training sessions, visit schools and visit major tourist attractions in the build up to the game.
