I'm trying to find a way to trace a phone number.

Are there any ways that normal people (like me!) can find out a name or location for a mobile number? Do you have to go through the police or is there a way to do it yourself somehow?

I don't want this question to sound weird or mysterious, I've just had a few odd calls in the past couple of weeks and I have no idea who they're from. They're not scary or menacing, so I don't want to bother the police, I'm just curious.

Can anyone help?

Why not ring the number - not from your phone - and pretend you are doing a survey or something. Or say they have won a prize at the local shopping centre but you can't read the address.

Thanks M29, I'm sure that will help! :D

I have the number BT. It shows up on my mobile when they call. But if I, or anyone else rings it back, they never say who they are. It's all very weird?

You can purchase a 'reverse phonebook' on cd rom from some newsagents.

You put in the number - or the address and it brings up the full details, but that would only help if the number was normally listed in the white pages.

Get someone else to ring it so they don't know it is you in case it is somebody with something running around in their attic and it will show up on their next monthly bill (if they aren't prepaid) with the location of the receiver. At least that will tell you if they are nearby or not.
