..the 96 preliminary final today.

It was the first time i've seen it since the actual game itself. I forgot just how good it was, especially our 2nd quarter and of course the last 4ish minutes of the game.

Hm and what incident was Andrew Dunkley reported for? That thing in the first quarter?

Can't remember exactly when it happened but you see him tussling with Hird on the ground keeping him down after a tackle and it looks like he puts his hand into Hird's face. I'm not sure the footage would stand up in today's tribunal. It was a striking charge. The Swans took out an injuction on the basis that the charge was laid for too late in the week for Dunkley to be able to prepare for the Grand Final - the footage wasn't made available until Wed. But judging from Hird's Brownlow photo taken shortly afterwards that year I'd say he had a case to answer for.

My memory is starting to get a little fuzzy about it all though. So apologies if it was a completely different incident.

Dunkley was suspended for it after the GF. He missed the first 2-3 weeks of 1997 IIRC.

That's pretty much how it happened, except for a few extra details

You mentioned the footage not standing up today, and indeed the video umpire deemed channel 7's footage "inconclusive"

What happened was that Optus Vision had another camera angle of the incident - a much more damning angle, but it didn't surface till midweek, and the charge wasn't laid till Thursday.

The Swans argued that that was far too late in the week to prepare for a tribunal hearing, and went to court to get the hearing postponed till the following week

From memory Dunkley ended up pleading guilty and copped a few weeks for his trouble

Yeah, the seven coverage hardly showed anything.

Hm and what happened to Lloyd? I saw him once and then the commentators said something about him having to go to the hospital or something?

Something to do with a lung? Or maybe a rib? Can't remember the incident or what happened, but i think it was early in the game.

Yeah it's fun watching some of the old games again. I bought a couple on VHS back in the 90's. But mostly my collection is just games taken of the box.

I have heaps of old recorded matches (icluding the odd gem like Tiger's first game) and it's amazing to pull them out now. Gives a real indication of the journey towards winning a Grand Final. When you're caught up in the seasons you usually get a good sense of whether your team is building slowly or plateauing (or sliding), but it's not until you reach a couple of Grand Finals and revisit these old matches that you truly get a perspective on how mediocre our play really was by comparison most of the time.

Savour this era while you can, boys and girls. For better or worse it doesn't get much better thas this. :D :thumbsu:
