I listened to interview with Ian Perrie on sportsnet today. One of the questions was posed as to how will Perrie, Stevens and Carey all play in the same forward line and what will be Perrie's role??????

Perrie said that he has spoken to Ayersy and Stevo will be our CHF and do his stuff up the ground like he has been for the past couple of seasons. Carey will stay closer to goal and give an occasional lead and Perrie will be the leading forward out of the goalsquare (as he is quickest of the 3).

This got me thinking that Brisbane have played the same sort of set up for the past couple of years where Lynch is the forward that stays close to goal and gives an occasional lead. Bradshaw is the forward that provides lot of the leads a role Perrie is penciled down for with us and Stevens and Brown dod the same sort of work at CHF.

There is a lot to like about this set up but we do need to accompany them with a lot of good crumbers. Ladhams, Bode and Edwards are capable of playing those roles and if Burns is played out of the pocket he could do that role very well. Schuback can also play that way and Welsh can also crumb well.

Thoughts??????

I like this set-up Stiffy. With Perrie as the leading forward on the burst, with Carey staying back it stops double teaming on Carey making him more dangerous. Alternatively if Perrie's opponent stays back then Perrie will have a feast.

With that structure, it means that we MUST have a real crumber ar4ound goals. That could be Burns once he strikes form, Bode , Edwards Ladhams etc etc.

Once Welsh is fit, it could be him, although he would make one hell of a HFF as well.

I like it. :)

I stood two metres away from him two weeks ago. Oh boy it was fantastic.

Anyways, the new structure needs a few weeks to be tested, in real matches.

I'd say maybe rotate the forward line a little more than the midfield to see what the best combinations might be. I really hope Burton and Burns improve, they are just plain fantastic to watch.

Knowing Ayres he might even experiment and give whoever is left over a role in the backline, the current backmen (John****, Edwards, Bickley for example) have shown they are capable of a bit of extra-curricular activity on the ground and therefore seem to be shouldering a bit more weight than the forwards.

But then again that has always really been the way, I heard somewhere recently the backmen tend to collaborate and work as a team while the forwards just worry about themselves marking the ball than kicking it through the big sticks. It really is obvious.

Thought provoking stuff here Oh Stiff One. Will be a real selectors nightmare when (lets hope its not IF) Welsh is fit and firing again.

I have seen Welsh as a more lead and mark type of forward, and more recently as the type to fight hard for the ball when it hits the deck. Do you remember early last season some of his tackles in our forward line when the opposition defender had the ball?

I believe Perrie is playing the role Welsh was early last season, and doing it very well too!! Sadly when Welshy is ready again I think Perrie could be relegated back to SANFL. I think the wet weather will dictate more "crumbing" type players around Stevo, Carey and a fit Welsh.

However I for one am glad to see Perrie playing some pretty exciting footy for now.

Good call Leigh, as there are a lot of options. I'm sure they will rotate them to get the best fit.

We can play all 3 in the forward line at times depending on conditions & opposition. More importantly it now gives us some flexibility. eg. if one were to get injured or we need another tall down back (eg. Bassett is struggling with a gorilla). Certainly have more depth than this time last year.

Just on Perrie, I remember when Evan Hewitt was delisted, my reaction along with most other Crow supporters was "should have been Perrie, not Hewitt".

The one thing we did concede was that Hewitt could be soft on occasions and Ayres just won't tolerate that which is why Perrie stayed and Hewitt went.

Another victory for the decision makers at Adelaide over us mug public!!! :D

Pfft, not me. Hewitt was a complete dud. Perrie had at least shown glimpses in seasons past.

Always thought Perrie had the goods & definately the ability to contest just that if he made a blue it seemed like it would put him back in his shell for long periods,

But who ever has turned Ian's thinking around dare we begin to believe it could also happen to BEN MARSH???

Thats a load of wishful thinking.:(

Having said that Ayersy after running on the field after the victory, gave a mini wrap to Marsh. Asked as to how good his ruckman were, Ayersy answered, "They have to be because they have Marsh pushing for their spot in the side"

I guess we will have to wait and see. I think it was in 2001 that Marsh was number 2 ruckman behind Clarke and ended up playing 18 games and if memory serves me correctly he had a couple of blinders. Marsh is a confidence player just as much as Perrie. Although Perrie has a bigger heart and better work ethic and Marsh has better skills.;)

Set up looks good in theory, doesn't it?????? We honestly need to play Burns out of pocket as he is not a HF Flanker and definetly not a midfielder.

With all in form this is how I would line them up:

FF: Perrie _ Carey _ Burns
HF: Ladhams _ Stevens _ Welsh

and you still have the likes of Burton, Ricciuto, Edwards, Bode, McLeod and Goodwin to rotate through the forward line. Reily and Doughty are also capable goal kickers.;)

Very Very potent forward line IMHO.:D

I think Welsh should take Perrie's spot when he comes back from injury...and perrie should go to half foward. Thats what gary said, that Welsh will be situated in the foward lines (care of 5AA!!!)

Too true Macca. Ayresy has weeded out the faint of heart apart from Marsh, so maybe he sees something we dont in the lanky ruckman

He would have been wrapped with Reils courage the other night...straight out of the Gary Ayres " stand your ground " Coaching Manual

On the forward setup Ive always liked Sarge but not his kickin'.
The fast leads are whats got him into this position to average 5 a game this year with topstuff also from DJ.

Welsh to come back yet may = rest the King

I reckon it was a bit tough on poor old hewitt to be delisted. I remember in one game i saw him play in, he gave us so much opportunity up in those foward lines to take a mark, he took four of them and had four shots at goal (missing all four might i add)
Although this can be nothing to go by, i reckon he was harshy dealt with.

Welsh?!?!

Where does Scotty Welsh fit into all of this...He'll be ready to play soon and he's gonna want a spot in the forward line too...

He'll be ready to play either round 2 or 3 I think. He'll probably have a couple of games with Westies to get a bit of match fitness and then come in to the forward pocket or the HF flank.

Don't worry Scotty Welsh lovers - he'll be definitely in the side once he's fit and had a couple of runs and be there for you to drool over!! :D

I think we can defiantely play Stevo, Carey & Perrie up in the forward line. If you add Welshy out of a pocket, you are really going to stretch the oposition back lines. Add Ronnie into the equastion and it is even better!

I think you'll find Ben Marsh has a year to go on his contract and we were unable to trade him :p so basically he had to stay on the list.

It may be different at the end of this year.

Cheers,
