If he is good enough to make it at senior level he should really start to tear it up in the VFL in his 3rd year on our list.

I dont expect him to kick a bag every week but he should be starting to show he is too good for VFL level and kick bags with some regularity if played deep in the fwd line.

Anyway thats my take on what 3rd and 4th year players should/need to be doing to suggest they have enough talent to kick on.

Why did we drop him? I thought he was adding a much needed dimension to our forward line and playing great for a young guy. Did i miss something?

probably woulda been dropped for team balance, as much as i would like to see him in the team, Kreuzer was brought in and he will probably spend the majority of his time up forward. if we had fev, fish, kreuz, edwards and possibly waite (if there is no big tall forward for him to cover) all up forward it becomes to crowded up there.

He had limited opportunities on Saturday night and we weren't looking for him enough. We should have bombed it to him in the goalsquare 1 on 1 not kick it to Fev with 3 players.

Jake was bottom-aged so its effectively his second year on the list. But you're correct. He really should dominate in the VFL, something he didn't do last year when he lacked the hunger.

His 2nd game wasnt good.

Got a goal early from a very lucky free.....didnt do much else.

Yeh did nothing last round. Great hands, rubbish kick although i rate his attitude. Definitely hopeful of further improvement from the Jakester.

Disagree.

Jake is good enough.

As I've posted before, I think he's more like a Tim Boyle type. If Boyle got dropped to Box Hill, I can't see him kicking a bag. He's the kind of player that bears influence with very few touches.

Jake is the same. Dropping him will do nothing - he will never rip up the Bullants.

Jake is far more valuable in the seniors. He is an impact player, and will be a very good servant of this football club. Jake will chip in with his 3 goals every now and then, like Boyle, but will never completely assert himself on a match.

Rate him very highly though, and he is definitely the foil we need.

I think you are right. Don't think his key talents - leading straight and fast and taking a mark - is necessarily going to shine on the boggy and windy grounds he plays on in the VFL. Let hope he does tear it up though.

Jake himself stated after round 1 he found it easier playing AFL as the delivery to him was better than in VFL.

I would also say the ground condition of AFL much better than VFL.

However it also highlights to me that he needs to improve his contested marking & ground level play.

He is too reliant on lead & mark plays.

Has shown enough to warrant plenty of games this year.

Playing Fisher, Edwards, Fev and Kreuzer in the same side might make it a bit top heavy up forward - and you'd think Kreuzer presenting across half forward would be more important than Edwards playing deep inside 50. Still, he's shown he's got talent, and at this stage of his career it won't hurt him to play some games in the VFL now that he's got a taste of the AFL - hopefully he's hungry for more and gives the club no choice but to play him.

We need Edwards to show a little something in reserves, like Jack Reiwoldt and that other one :)p), kicking 6 and 7 goals respectively.

If he can have just one stunner of a game, it could do his footy career wonders.

Jake has shown enough for me to suggest that he'll be a very useful player for the Carlton Football Club in the coming years.

He didn't do much vs St Kilda but that was more due to lack of opportunity. The midfielders really didn't look for him enough when going forward.

Having said that, it really isn't a bad idea to send him down the the Bullants for a few games. A game like last week can easily diminish the confidence of young kids like Jake so it's a good idea to let him get some of that confidence back in his game. Hopefully he can rebuild his confidence by getting his hands on the ball and kicking a few goals, and then when his confidence is back he can come into the senior side.

My only worry in the long term is how we are going to fit all of Kreuzer, Fev, Edwards and Fisher in the forward line at the same time, with Hartlett and Cloke, and even Waite possibly all spending time up forward.
