Strategy If you were coach

Obviously you’re being sarcastic but I actually didn’t mind Frost’s ruckwork last year. He’s not good enough to be a first ruck obviously but when he goes in there to cover Gawn’s breaks now and again he’s not a bad neutraliser.

Best tackler in the wide with Pang as well.

If I was coach I would actually rather our players take a ping at goals than kick to a pack of six players in the goal square. Might look greedy when your mids keep going for the goals, but better than seeing 10 inside 50's in a row come flying straight back out because we just set the ball up to a pack.

Yeah i've noticed us avoid taking shots too. 'That's the problem with Arsenal..'

1. Pick Frost every week
2. Instruct my defenders to punch the ball rather than trying to mark from behind
3. Instruct my forwards to stop getting pushed under the ball
4. Play Petracca at FF rotating with Pedersen at CHF / HF
5. When Pedersen is at CHF have him push up towards the midfield for stoppages to provide an additional body, dragging a defender up with him
6. Have Pedersen roam between CHF and CHB acting as a link player, pushing the ball into Hogan and Petracca deeper. Yes his defender might hang back in our 50 but if he is getting plenty of the ball, helping out our half back line and midfielders, and kicking it deep towards FF anyway, then someone will need to man up on him otherwise he essentially becomes an 8th defender.
7. 6 Is mitigated by Max Gawn pushing forward more often than not and helping out our forwards. Need to see more of that.
8. Jake Lever will stay across HB, if his man tries to take him to FB where he is ineffectual, and his opponent is more dangerous, then cue Pedersen as the utility pushing back to take a mark / contest in our backline on the direct opponent of Lever.
9. Two of Melksham, Harmes or Garlett needs to be at the front of the contest in every forward entry. One of those players can push back for an 'over the back' contest.
10. Brayshaw and Tyson picked. Brayshaw pushing forward and looking to attack the goals. Tyson in direct support to Oliver.
11. Jones stationed more across half back to assist in rebounds if required. I think he is too slow for the midfield these days.
12. Hunt push up to become more of an outside runner carrying on the good inside work of Oliver and Tyson.
13. Petracca push into the midfield as well and swapping with Brayshaw on a HFF.
14. Question the actual timeframe of McDonald and Viney coming back and start putting more heat onto the medical team to why my team is not fit when it should be.
15. Tell everyone that without a full four quarter effort, they can play for Casey next week.

Summary

1. Pedersen becomes a utility in every sense. Going anywhere from FF to FB. The positives are that his opponent can be dragged up with him or have the option of staying back as an extra defender. If he stays back, then he gets Gawn pushing don to contend with. If he follows Pedersen, then Gawn is one out in our forward line (unless his opponent follows).

2. Good versatility with Petracca at FF
3. 2 KPD Picked very week totally releasing Lever
4. Jones's lack pace hidden at HB
5. Crumbers at every contest

Looks like you've given this a little bit of thought.

Tried to, the only issues with Gawn pushing forward is his opponent follows, but then if Pedersen is back in the defensive 50 they are outnumbered. It comes down to whether the opposition ruckman backs himself enough to push back into his forward line, even still, we are one up with Lever or Pedersen. If he follows Gawn then it becomes a 50/50 contest, and i'd hope our crumbing players would be smart enough to get to the ball drop, as well as aggressive midfielders like Brayshaw who like a goal.

No, wasn't actually. Frost would be interesting in the ruck and running around the ground like his usual mad self. He certainly has the pace and mobility to do a job on the park, it's whether the four or five completely mental things he does will be offset by his impact around the ground.

Jones is still quicker than Tyson. There's room for him in the middle.

I felt like we were taking more shots like this during the JLT, but went away from it against Geelong. Perhaps they have been instructed to take their shots but reverted to old habits against Geelong

I'd have liked to see Pedersen just kick for goal. It was a beautiful centring ball but he's also a nice straight kick, and I reckon he was within range. Send Gawn to the goal square to bring the ball to ground in case he falls short, and back your rovers in to make a play of it.

Melksham, Harmes and Garlett couldn’t have had worse games. I am adamant 2 of those 3 always need to be at the ball drop for every forward contest.

Melksham, Hannan and Garlett should be performing that role consistently. Harmes is reasonable overhead and can do a decent impression of a lead up medium forward. Really should've been Hannan and Garlett though as they're the two who have the pace / nous around goal to make the most of crumbs, and they were near completely absent last Sunday.

I'd even just back Oliver in to extract that ball and get it off hands to a forward in the clear to take a shot. I think we really missed Viney and Tyson in our forward half stoppages on the weekend. With Jones playing wide we essentially went into the game with one specialised contested ball/stoppage/pack player, it was madness.

Petracca, Oliver and Jones were fine, but the rotations of ANB, Hannan, Maynard, Salem (although for a little patch there Salem was good), etc didn't work out. Lewis got a bit of it, but from my viewing didn't seem to use the ball that well: hand balled more often than not to players under the pump. Tyson back will help, but you'd think we'd need Viney back as well, and on the weekend's viewing, the other midfield rotation I'd have would be Vince.

Guess we'll see how Goodwin sees it today.

I’d pray that TMac gets back ASAP so that we can have a back up plan to cover dominant big bodied forwards or release Lever to intercept when needed.

I'd have had Frost in over Bugg. Would give us more flexibility down back to cope with talls. He's not great overhead for his size, but he'll at least be able to go around the ground with any tall.
