I disagree Stiffy as it is not the right person or the place for such comments. This type of thing tends to only inflame the situation & make it worse. However, I would hope that behind closed doors, the AFC are doing their nana at the AFL Umpiring section & provide clear evidence of pathetic umpiring performance today.
We'll agree to disagree on this one. When Hird came out and blasted Scott McLaren, bombers got a dream run next week and for the rest of the year.

Something needs to be said and said publicly otherwise NOTHING gets done. We have complained in the past, Port have complained this year through the right channels yet NOTHING changes.

I am sorry but I am sick and tired of seeing those boofheads distroying the game of footy. If I was that incompetent in my job I would get the sack but for some reason the umpiring deprartment is sacered. They need to get their house in order before they get precious about someone getting stuck into them

I'm in your corner Stiffy. I'm fuming about it. That's two matches in a row that appear to be more than inconsistency.

I'm sick and tired of the AFC getting the rough end of a pineapple rammed up their backsides by the cheating maggots in yellow and nothing being said about it.

Most of the Freo frees were legitimate, but when the same things happened to an Adelaide player, it was shut the eyes and call play on. Same as in the Richmond game.

Biglands might be a boofhead, and protocol says he shouldn't have said what he did - but I'm glad that he did.

It's not just the count going against us week after week, it's where frees are not paid. As with the Geelong game, there were several frees within 40 of goal not paid today.
It is time the Adelaide board demanded a meeting with the AFL with the umpiring panel present and asked what the f*** is going on. Take a bit of video footage from various games to back up the points.
While we are about it, we should get the Power to come along, because they are also being shafted.

I have been one of pez's harshest critics but since the glove has raised it's head, Pez has been in top form. He's holding his marks again - hallelua.
Phew I thought it was me..but no I am happy with his output. I do think the glove is a Charlie Walsh idea.I think he has had some positive reinforcement drilled into him in realtion to the glove.

I expect you are right. How much money does the AFL need to spend to determine the Geish is doing a lousy job ... or should that be trying to justify that everything is OK?

Remember how the three umpires at the Geelong game got the axe the next week because they were terrible. Look out Head, Goldspink and even pretty boy James. How can blokes getting paid as much as they do struggle to work out what is or isn't holding the ball?

And here I was thinking that Crows supporters dont boo umpires off the ground after a win? At least thats what jmorg and co said on here a few weeks back when having a go at Port supporters for booing. hmmm ;)

If the AFC hierachy, and PAFC for that matter, don't request a "please explain" from Gieshen and co then they would be doing a disservice to their fans.

Do we wait until it costs us a final before we put in an official complaint?

It doesnt do any good, all you get back is they are doing their best and dont critisize the little pr**cks otherwise they will take their balls and go home.
Chocco says that they have tried it in the past and silence is golden from the heirachy.

I am actually glad Biglands said something and I will be quite happy to chip in for the fine. Going behind the scences does nothing because they just brush it off. If he said that after a loss then I would be against it but its about time umpiring department took a good hard look at itself. I am sick and tired of seeing these cretins ruin a game of footy.

AFL is quickly becoming very precious and sanitised coopreration that cannot accept constructive critisism. If the umpires are going to pay a certain free kick at the start of the game then I expect them to be consistent through out the game. Whats frustrates the ******** out of me is that consistency from quarter to quarter is not there let alone game to game. What was interpreted as a free kick in the first quarter was not in the 2nd and so on.

I don't expect the free kicks to be even because that depends on how sides play. If a side is undiscipline then obviouslty they will have more frees against. However, what I do expect is some sort of consistency and quite frankly the umpiring for the last couple of years has been notoriously inconsistent.

Me too, it'll probably cost him or the club but we can live with that. It's about time these little precious a**holes had someone with guts take them to the cleaners. If only I was a multimillionaire.

Was fuming straight after the game, not so much with the umpiring, but with our shocking errors in the last quarter that kept Freo in the game. That is the third time this year (West Coast and Western Bulldogs the other games) where we have been seriously challenged and come up short. However, we did manage to hang on and win a game we would have lost in previous years so hopefully Craigy and the coaching staff can emphasise where we can improve in these close games when the pressure comes on.

Don't want to be too negative but some glaring errors that could've cost us the game against stronger opposition or in finals where:

Biglands dropped mark. Say no more.
Reilly kicking out on the full when running into an open goal in the last quarter to ice the game (even a behind would've been handy to make the lead 19 points).
Hart's non-effort to spoil Polak.
Hudson taking the ball out of the ruck with 3 mins to go & gettting caught holding it.
Van Berlo, after a terrific first half, perhaps getting a little over confident in the 2nd and going left-foot happy and turning it over a few times.
Bassett, taking a great courageous mark on the members wing and then missing a 20m pass to Doughty by 5m when we needed to soak up the clock.
Doughty dropping a chest mark (I think it carried) when having front position from a Freo kick forward.
Rutten a shocking turn-over to Farmer on our half forward line.

There is 8 examples of how we kept them in the game in the last quarter! Probably did well to hang on in the end, hopefully we can learn from it and not make the same mistakes next time we are in that situation.

While I don't condone Rhett's comments yesterday, rubbish like what we witnessed yesterday cannot go unchecked. It was unfortunate that Rhett had a microphone stuck in his face less than 15 seconds after such a harrowing and frustrating game......I reckon 80% of players (never mind administrators) would have reacted the same. Interview him 5 mins later....and he wouldn't have made the same comment. Rhett should be chastised by the club.....but shouldn't be on next Easter's short-list to be nailed up IMO.

However......I strongly recommend that the AFL declare Round 15 "National Sorry Round" and ask umpires at all fixtures to parade the boundary line before the games to say sorry to the fans, (neigh.... the community), for continuing to bring our game into disrepute. I know there are a few part time umpires here who fiercely defend their craft......as they should....and this is in so way a reflection on them........but some of the crap we have witnessed this year is scandalous. They continue to get things so WRONG. They argue it's interpretation......no - the obvious mistakes are not a matter of interpretation. They argue they are unsighted.......well the 3 of them should position themselves around the action in a triangular fashion rather than pulling themselves in the forward pocket while the ball is down the other end. Counter argument could be that they are waiting to see holding decisions in the forward line......well there are a lot more things happening where the ball is that are either going un-noticed or are being ignored.

Drugs in Sport...?......TV rights.....?......grassroots development....?

NO NO NO...........FIX THE BLOODY UMPIRING SITUATION.......ITS A ********ING DISGRACE......

The Matthew Clarke I know wouldn't have taken that mark either. If you are going to drop Biglands for Clarke, it has to be because of their tap work. Clarke's ground play is not superior to Biglands'. No matter how many clangers Biglands makes, Clarke bearly touches the ball in general ground play.

Excellent post. Sums up my feelings on the subject.
Goldspink in particular is a disgrace, with a history of poor performances against Adelaide. I believe this stems back to his early days when he was given a particularly hard time at Footy Park. I've twice seen him spray people in the crowd who have said something to him prior to the game, I've seen him looking at the crowd in anticipation before he pays a contentious free. I think he actually thrives on it.

As many others have said, it's not only what they pay, but more importantly when they don't pay free kicks. There is zero consistency and I for one would like to see us go back to 2 umpires who get teamed together for the season, so that they learn to match interpretations. This doesn't fix blatant cheats like Goldspink, but it would help the overall problem. I think it's time the AFC wore a fine and gave a massive spray to the umpires, leading up to the finals. Tactically this would be useful, but sometimes the pressure just has to be released and the players need to know that the club will back them up when they are frustrated.

Yeah one week too late

I am glad that Biglands spoke up, the guys must be so angry with the umpiring I suppose there is only so much that you can take. Anyway it worked wonders for James Hird??? :D

Mighty interesting. So with nearly all Vic umpires, it comes as no surprise that 5 out of the 6 interstate side are in the bottom 8, and if you take Geelong to be a non Melb team then it's 6 out of 8 at the bottom.
So tell me again someone that there is no bias by our umpires against non Melb sides.
I would love to see the free kick stats over the last ten or so years ,as I think it would show that same bias. However, I'm too lazy to make
the effort .

I'm scared too about the current state of umpiring.

$20000 meh. If all Crows supporters at the match donated a dollar to the 'free speech' charity. We would have another $20k for someone else to have a spray.

Looking at the free kick count in todays paper
Frees for the Crows D50: 2; MID: 10; F50: 1;
Frees for the Dockers D50: 10; MID: 11; F50: 4;

Not sure where the dubious ones were paid but inside the Crows Forward 50 the free kick count was 1-10 (Dockers way). Thats the potential loss of 10 scoring shots.

Inside Freo's Forward 50 2-4 (Dockers Way). The Dockers got 5 goals from frees to our 1.

It's easy to see how the Dockers were kept in the game due to the umpires (whether it be poor discipline or bad umpiring). (and people say umpires don't change games)

Did anyone else notice that John Reid came out of the different gate than he normally does at the end of the game. He got out that gate where umpires were going into their changerooms. For all the years I have gone to footy this is the first time I saw JR get onto the ground via that gate. I am sure he wanted to give the yellow boofheads a deadly stare and maybe a little bit of lip.

Didn't notice - I'm on the other side of the ground.....but good on the little fella......I think it's about time someone did some research on Gold-fink to find out what it is that's made him such a vindictive little ********. Bed wetting, schoolyard bullying, attacked in his pram by a Crow......whatever it is....he needs help.....
