Does anyone else think draft picks are done in the wrong order. All other sporting contests culmitate in the championship match. ALmost all great sporting contests end with the Final. Why do the AFL start with the Number 1 draft pick and then go on to worse players. There is no climax to the draft. It peters out as worse and worse players are chosen, the longer it goes.

Wouldn't the draft be more interesting if they started with pick 79 and worked its way up to Pick no 1? As the event went on, the expectation would build. Who will be Top 10? Who will be number 1? etc. Perhaps this is why the draft does not have prime time TV coverage? I reckon my basic change would make it a better TV event.

You are talking about improving the T V COVERAGE of the draft, right ? It could only be done in the way you suggest if it was not done live and, with the internet etc these days most fans will know the drafts (or at least the ones that interest them) well before the televised event, so they will have no reason to watch.

Yeah, you would have to do the draft live on TV, otherwise there would be no suspense as people would hear about it on Radio, IPOD, Messenger, etc.

I can only assume you mean that ALL selctions are done behind closed doors in the conventional manner and once finished the selections are then read out in reverse order for the benefit of the camera's and the viewing public.
If that's not what you meant, seek help.

You could do it that way, but I think there are two better ways.

1. You can only pick certain players with certain picks.

eg with picks 55 to 80 you can only pick one of the following:
a) Pass
b) player who should have retired long ago but fills a desperate need for a ruckman or full back
c) a 22 year old "late developer" from the the Riverina or Easter Districts league that no-one has ever heard of.

With picks 30-55
a) if you are a victorian team you select a player that played every TAC Cup match, made the Rep squad, but is already built like a man and has little room for improvement.
b) if you are a northern states team, you must select a local player that has no hope of making the grade but gives the allusion that you are supporting local talent.
c) if you are a team from Western or South Australia, you must select a player that you have hidden in the bush all year or kept from playing Finals footy in the local league due to an "injury" (unless of course you have hidden them so well that you think you can get them in the Rookie Draft).

With Picks 20-30 you must select:
a) a player that has missed large chunks of the season through injury.

With picks 10-20 you must:
a) trade your pick away if you are Sydney
b) pick an athlete with limited football knowledge
c) pick a guy with great football skils but weighs under 70kg.

With a TOp 10 pick teams rarely pick for need, usually picking the "best available player". If we reverse the order of the draft, teams must simply pick the worst available player.

Simple system that should work well for TV. Or the other way you could do it:

2. All the teams representatives sit at desks arranged in a circle. Each team has a long telescopic pointer. If a club reads out the name of a player that another team wants to draft later, that team subtly taps the guy reading the name out on the head with the pointer and he reads another name.

Jeffrey is this some sort of dry joke or are you serious?? Tap the guy on the back if hes picking the player you want? Sounds alot like the guy who tapped on the window at Aurora Stadium with a crown lager when he heard the siren go.

If you need help combining thoses words to form a grammatically correct phrase, try the following:

Definetly the stupidest thing ever.
Definetly the stupidest thing in history.
Definetly the stupidest thing ever thought of.

Don't post on this thread unless you are going to make the effort to post something sensible.

The Gambian Planes are in Gambia. When you say "Are there more like you?" do you mean other black people? Why judge me by the colour of my skin? Sounds racist to me.

Firstly, well done, the words are in the right order this time. Now try using punctuation (there the full stops, commas and stuff). Secondly, stop taking cheap shots at my posts from the outer. It is easy for you to sit back there and say my posts are crap, but how about you come up with something better. If my post #7 is so bad then tell us how you would make the reverse order draft work. I am waiting.

The reverse order draft is a very dumb idea and would never work, how about you just don't post your ideas ever again and come back with something decent.

Replace the comma with a full stop and you've got it. Well what would you do to make the draft more interesting and boost ratings? THe draft is by far the lowest of the football codes in Australia behind AFL, Soccer, Rugby League and Rugby Union. It needs help to get TV exposure, especially in cricket and golf season. Low ratings will mean the end of the draft. AFL is all about TV these days. Tell me what you would do. Or are you just being a negative anti-draft troll becasue you barrack for a team that can't draft and want the draft to get low ratings so they get rid of it and you can sign up all the good South Australians again?

Soccer, Rugby League and Union don't have drafts so I don't quite understand your point there. Who the hell cares if the draft isn't on TV and how would that spell the end of it if it isn't going to be on TV. Leave it the way it is it's fine there is no need for it to go on TV.

The point is that Soccer, Leauge and Union all rate higher than the draft.

Come on. How many times do I have to say it. In the long term, no TV ratings - no draft. Name one Australian sport that survives without TV coverage. Even bowls, women's basketball and hockey get coverage. If you belived in the equitable distribution of footballing talent with a bias towards the lowest finishing team in the preceding year, you would try to improve the draft. However, it looks like you are another Carlton supporter who wants to get out his chequebook and buy the most talented South Australians. Stop trolling this thread.

The draft is great I don't want it to go it keeps the competition fair and equal. Are you trying to tell me that the draft will be scrapped because of no TV coverage? What's next the NAB rising star award will be scrapped because of no T.V coverage? Sorry clubs cannot award best and fairests because of no TV coverage. No more All australian awards either there is no TV coverage of it.

Not every aspect of the game needs to be televised in order to survive.

Edited to remove personal abuse

You are very Naive.

PS You are right about the Rising star award and the All Australian Team lacking TV coverage. Check out my new threads tomorrow on how to save them. (It will involve SMS voting and Jelly Beans).
