"Australia fast bowler Andrew Bichel has been ruled out of his side's VB Series match against Sri Lanka in Brisbane this Wednesday (15 January) with an injured right shoulder.

Western Warriors fast bowler Brad Williams and New South Wales Blues quick Nathan Bracken have been drafted into the squad as cover for both Bichel and Glenn McGrath.

McGrath's fitness for Wednesday's match is still to be determined after suffering joint irritation in his lower back.

Bichel suffered the injury during Saturday's VB Series match against England in Hobart (11 January) following a heavy dive in the field, but continued to bowl.

Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott said: "Andy has suffered acute damage to some tendons in his right shoulder.

"The shoulder hasn't improved over the last few days so he will have diagnostic scans in Brisbane tomorrow.

"After that we will have a better understanding of the injury and the likely time it will take before he resumes bowling."

Andrew Bichel said: "I'm pretty disappointed at missing this match, particularly as it's in my home state.

"I guess it's a question of looking at the bigger picture though, and making sure the body is right before the VB Series finals and the World Cup.

"I will be guided by Errol and the medical experts as to the steps that need to be taken to get back out on the field."

Commenting on the selection of Williams and Bracken as cover players, Chairman of the National Selection Panel Trevor Hohns said: "Both Brad and Nathan have performed quite well this summer and did a good job when spearheading the Australia A attack.

"They warrant an opportunity to play at national level should either of them be required."

Williams' first and only one-day international was the opening match of the 2001-02 VB Series against New Zealand in Melbourne, while Bracken who made his one-day international debut against the West Indies in 2000-01 has not added to his nine-match tally since the 2001 Kelvinator Tour of India. "

Has Brett Lee got a voodoo doll ?
Gillespie -injured
McGrath -injured
Bichel - injured

Its one good way of making sure you get a regular game.

you forgot warne, and the 5th bowler in a full strength side, lehmann

I'd love to see Noffke get a go, IMO a much better bowler than Bracken and will be Australias next McGrath.

If Williams doesn't get a game ahead of Bracken (assuming it comes down to picking one of them) then I will be ****ty. Williams is in great form, and should clearly be the next Aussie paceman in line (and Nofke is ahead of Bracken too)

My thoughts exactly. Even thou McGrath is to undergo a injury-test and isn't ruled out completly like Bichel, i say we rest McGrath anyway and see how Noffke goes with the first team. I hope Hauritz gets a go soon too. I would have had Bracken and Noffke in for Bichel and McGrath purely to get a left-handed pace bowler into the side to see how we go with a bit more variety. Been a while since we had a lefty pace bowler other than Bracken.

Its Williams thats been getting wickets in the Aus A & ING cup games, but you know they'll pick Bracken ahead of him.

Here are the top 5 wicket takers in the ING Cup.

Player Wkts Avge Team
J Angel 12 17.00 WA
JR Hopes 9 19.55 QLD
SR Watson 8 27.62 TAS
NW Bracken 8 23.37 NSW
SD Bradstreet 7 22.85 NSW

Funny. I dont see Williams name there anywhere

As I understand it, Noffke is injured. He didn't play for QLD against the Country XI yesterday, and hasn't played since the Aus A game at the Gabba.Otherwise he would be in the squad.

Bracken is the new Brendon Julian - in the team because the idea of a left-arm pace bowler is better than the reality (at this time). He's a good bowler, who has performed well on the big stage, but should not be the 6th choice in the land (behind McGrath, Gillespie, Lee, Bichel and Williams) at this stage.

This is a marvellous test of our depth. If either Williams or Bracken do well under the pressure of an International match, then we have found the depth we were concerned we lacked last week.

Another interesting aside - Jimmy Maher is our back-up keeper-in-training. This is a dangerous policy, isn't it?

I read a story about that today & it mentioned he filled in during a one day game for QLD a few years ago,but it didn't say if he'd ever kept at any other stage in his career.Has he ?

It said he was back-up. I do not know if he has ever actually kept in a First-class game, but he has been back-up. Maybe this implies the odd warm-up macth at the start of the season, or maybe even a session here and there. One thing is certain. It'll be bloody quiet behind the stumps, and keeping to anyone other than pacemen will challenge him.

And with that in mind, who actually thinks that Maher keeping to Warnie in SA is a good idea? Gilly still has the odd moment when he can't pick him. What's Jimmy gonna do?

Does this mean Bracken will end up working on Getaway too? :D

As for Maher being the back-up keeper. I've never seen him keep so I've got no idea how good he would be. I know Ponting can keep, but would be too valuable in the field.

Who would people pick between Maher and Langer? Both excellent cricketers who throw their hand at keeping.

hmmm.

That's tough, because they're both in very good form. Maher can field anywhere, though, Langer can't. Neither of them should be considered back-up keepers.
