Hamill surprises Thomas

AARON Hamill appears a certain starter for St Kilda on Saturday night after showing rapid improvement in the past 48 hours.

Hamill pulled up sore after his comeback match against the Bulldogs on Friday, but St Kilda coach Grant Thomas is pleasantly surprised by his progress.

"He's made a couple of quantum leaps," Thomas said last night. "He was struggling a bit after the game, but he's fine. Everything's really good. He's jumped ahead."

Hamill said in a radio interview on Saturday he might need his knee drained regularly to get through the season. But recent developments have the Saints feeling positive Hamill can have more of an impact in coming games. The outing against the Bulldogs was Hamill's first since suffering posterior cruciate ligament damage in Round 7.

Thomas said full-forward Fraser Gehrig was feeling no after-effects from falling heavily on his wrist against the Dogs.

Defender Max Hudghton, who suffered ankle damage, will also be fit to tackle the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Saturday night.
