wtf I just realised Gibcus did his ACL nearly 2 years ago. Crazy that he basically missed two entire seasons from it instead of the regular 12 months or sooner

Has played 3 games in 3 years. Would be a 70-80 gamer by now had he not had these two shocking long term injuries and the complications.

Key position players from that 2021 draft and games played so far:

Michita Owens 72
Jye Amiss 71
Mac Andrew 65
Jacob Van Rooyen 57
Sam Darcy 45
Jack Williams 45
Rhett Bazzo 28
Patrick Voss 27
Leek Aleer 25

Josh Gibcus 21 🙁

So much experience gone that he can't get back. I was watching some of his highlights and man, I had forgotten how good he was in 2022. Makes me more sad about it

Remember a player like Astbury had a similarly affected first 4 seasons and did not seem to suffer for knowhow when the whips were cracking in the big games later on. Gibcus will be fine if he can get a decent run at it from here.

And waaaaay more talented and athletic than down the line Dave

Dylan Grimes played 26 games in his first 4 years due to hammies then played 200 games in the next 10 years

As long as he hasn't lost a step from the injuries. Hopefully he has a great season

Tigers gun back with main group after ankle injury, veterans on modified programs

Jan 19, 2026

Richmond star Nick Vlastuin has transitioned back into the main group early in 2026 after his 2025 campaign ended in August due to a nasty broken ankle, while young key forward Jonty Faull is recovering from his own ankle concern.

Vlastuin missed the final game of last season after suffering the ankle fracture against North Melbourne in Round 23 and has slowly increased his workload up across his 14th preseason at the Swinburne Centre.

The 31-year-old produced one of the best seasons of his 255-game career in 2025, earning selection in the All-Australian squad for the second time before finishing narrowly behind Tim Taranto in the Jack Dyer Medal.

Richmond has also carefully managed the four other players at the club who are above the age of 30 all summer, with Tom Lynch, Nathan Broad, Toby Nankvervis and Dion Prestia following modified programs to have them ready for a practice match ahead of the season opener against Carlton on March 12.

Faull was confined to the rehab group on Monday morning after spraining his ankle last week, but the 195cm key forward is expected to be fully fit by the end of the month and has laid the foundations for a decent second season since his last game in August.

After playing 16 games in an impressive debut season, the 2024 first-round pick inherited the iconic No.8 guernsey in the off-season, worn with distinction by Richmond champions Jack Riewoldt, Michael Roach and Dick Clay.

Luke Trainor was limited on Monday to running laps after a knock at training last week, while Tom Sims is still a couple of months away from fully recovering from a navicular stress fracture in his right foot.

Josh Gibcus hasn't missed a beat all pre-season and is quietly building momentum after making a late season return from a nightmare injury run across 2023 and 2024.

The 2021 first-round pick banked six VFL games across last July and August before Adem Yze rewarded him with his first AFL game in 527 days against Geelong in Round 24.

Really looking forward to seeing how Gibcus goes.

Vlastuin's comments about his rehab are a little concerning. Hopefully everything is fine when the season starts and lack of a pre-season doesn't affect him too much.
Not ideal for him as an individual but not terrible for us overall imo
Gives us a chance to experiment with a very important position in the modern game and opens up a spot for another kid
