Cats want Wizard Cup semi berth
Saturday February 28
Geelong Advertiser - DAVID DAVUTOVIC
LAST year they finished 12th and 15th respectively, but last weekend's Wizard Cup form suggests Geelong and Carlton will make a considerable improvement on 2003.
Both clubs will be eager to secure a semi-final berth in the pre-season competition and give their suffering fans renewed hope when they clash at Optus Oval today.
Paul Chapman and Kane Tenace have been included in the Cats' squad after the pair had solid VFL outings last week.
For the Blues, the loss of skipper Anthony Koutoufides to a hamstring injury has been overshadowed by the inclusion of Irish rookie Setanta O'hAilpin, while former Cat David Clarke has also been named.
Four players are to be cut from the squads of 28, leaving the Cats with two less on the bench than last week.
Gary Ablett will resume in the VFL when the Cats take on Northern Bullants in the curtain-raiser at 11am.
Andrew Mackie will make his second appearance of the season after playing a quarter last week, while Charlie Gardiner has also been named.
David Wojcinski is still sidelined with a buttocks injury while Daniel Foster (back) is due to return in a fortnight.
``We took a lot of positive stuff out of the second half (in Cairns) and we're hopeful we can build on that, but they're always hard to beat at Optus Oval and the influence of the new recruits has certainly helped,'' football manager Garry Davidson said.
``They obviously played very well and got a contribution from all the new boys, Nick Stevens is a quality player and the likes of (Daniel) Harford and (Brett) Johnson add a bit of depth.''
TODAY'S game is at Optus Oval, starting at 2.10pm. It will be telecast on Channel 9.
Assuming that the article is correct, I think it's safe to presume GAJ hasn't got osteitis pubis since he is due to play with the VFL side this morning. I look forward to seeing Mackie get more ground time as he makes his way back from a knee injury. Which reminds me; what is the deal with James Allan's knee injury? Correct me if I'm wrong, but did he not suffer the injury during last year's pre-season? Why has he still not got over it one whole year later? Also interesting to note how Daniel Foster is still very much fighting his '2 week injury'.
