For this week
just heard on AA

In - bishop mahoney Surjan pettirgrew
out - chaplin James (inj) Brogan Shattock

Still room for cochrane

jeez

not convinced at all

Yeah, but even so, we come out ahead. Mahoney and Bish. Surjan should be hot to show his stuff, as should the Grew.

Maybe not enough to get over Geelong, though.

Five changes would have been over the top. And to bring in who? Salopek? 1/4 in about 8 weeks isn't much preparation for a guy who isn't a regular yet. Give him a full game this week. Pickett available next week, maybe James, even Sala and (assuming no bad luck :o ) the pressure's on for places next week.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pettigrew start on a wing. He's tall, very quick, loves a dash and his skills are sound. Could create some match up problems.

Any word on James' injury status: ie just soreness or exacerbation of knee injury leading to weeks on sidelines?

I think we are confused about what to do with Pettigrew and Chaplin. We are bringing them in and out like yo-yos. They haven't played too badly and yet they find themselves being dropped for the other. Must be for matchups.

I agree, the changes are good. We can only carry one of James/Francou, and Francou appears to be more advanced physically.
Shattock and Brogan for Mahoney and Bishop, that leaves Chaplin for Pettigrew.
next week, there will be more.
I too would love to see Pettigrew get gametime in a position where he will be difficult to match up against. It's early in the season, so let's see what he has to offer.

James out but two return

Port Adelaide has regained two of its premiership stars ahead of Friday night’s clash with Geelong but lost inside midfielder Roger James.

On a mixed selection night, the Power was able to add defender Matthew Bishop and small forward Josh Mahoney to its 22 but had to surrender the injured Aaron Shattock, suspended Dean Brogan and James with continuing knee problems.

“It’s an on-going knee problem that Roger has had since back into last year,” Power football manager Peter Rohde told PortAdelaideFC.com.au.

“The six-day break has definitely made it difficult for him to come up this week. We’ll assess his situation again early next week.”

James had minor knee surgery in the off-season, therefore having a limited pre-season. He missed Round 1 but came into the side in Round 2, mainly being used from the bench.

Mahoney injured his knee in the Round 1 loss to Fremantle but returns this week after being cleared to play. Bishop has missed the last three weeks with an ankle injury.

Jacob Surjan returns to the side after recovering from an ankle injury he sustained in Round 2, while young defender Troy Chaplin has been dropped and Michael Pettigrew is back in.

The Power side to face Geelong on Friday night at AAMI Stadium from 8.10pm is as follows...

B: Peter Walsh, Darryl Wakelin, Michael Wilson
HB: Brett Montgomery, Matthew Bishop, Adam Kingsley
C: Domenic Cassisi, Kane Cornes, Brett Ebert
HF: Josh Mahoney, Warren Tredrea, Stuart Dew
F: Damon White, Toby Thurstans, Gavin Wanganeen
Foll: Matthew Primus, Peter Burgoyne, Josh Francou
Interchange: Stuart Cochrane, Brendon Lade, Michael Pettigrew, Jacob Surjan

Emergencies: Troy Chaplin, Jared Poulton, Steven Salopek

IN: Bishop, Mahoney, Pettigrew, Surjan
OUT: Brogan (suspended), Chaplin (omitted), James (knee), Shattock (hip)

Meanwhile, Geelong has lost captain and no. 1 ruckman Steven King from its side that beat Essendon. The Cats line-up is...

B: J Hunt, M Scarlett, J Rooke
HB: C Enright, T Harley, D Milburn
C: J Bartel, J Kelly, P Riccardi
HF: P Chapman, H Playfair, G Ablett
F: S Johnson, B Ottens, K Kingsley
Foll: C Chambers, J Corey, C Ling
Interchange: C Gardiner, K Tenace, S Byrnes D Johnson

Emergencies: M Blake, T Callan, C Thurley

IN: Chambers
OUT: King (lower back tightness)

Best team we have named so far this year. Really pleased with it. Doc will give us some speed and hunger, jameys needs a rest, he spent 90% on the bike last week, we cant carry him while his isnt so fit. Bish back along with Josh (A Small Crumber) thank god back in the forward line........Looks Good!!

So confident about this week, and really excited for the first time in 4 weeks, we will win.

 Go the Mighty Power!!

By my count we have introduced only one fully fit player to the lineup. Hmm.

I would have raver had James still in and Cochrane dropped... even if Roger sat the whole game on the bench.

I am all for supporting Port and not bagging them... but I have never seen Cochrane as a Port player... only as a Centrals player running around as a spy. :)

Hopefully we can play some decent footy this week and we have a couple of handy players back, but once again 3 of those are underdone.

Selection is obviously a tough issue, but we are still getting some slightly baffling decisions.

Even on paper we look inferior to Geelong: our backlines on paper are comparable, thereafter they have the better forward line (given the form and class of their three small forwards who player like rovers in the forward line, not like opportunists), midfield (by far), and bench.

When you factor in form and fitness of some of our players, it looks like a very average line-up in my opinion.

Once again we limit our options to 21 players. Cochrane has become a waste of a selection. There are Geelong medium-sized players he could "run-with" but that would be handing them dominance of the game while giving Stuey too much gametime. Come on Stuey, please prove me wrong and play even a bit like you did at the start of 2003.

Francou's name I just skim over when I think midfield matchups. As I see it they have 4 very good midfielders (Kelly, Corey, Ling, Bartel) plus quality in Riccardi, Milburn, Enright and three really hard at it goalkicking small forwards.
We have Peter Burgoyne, Kane Cornes, and a guy who is in form in Dew. Kingsley has not been as prolific as he needs to be, and Francou has to start getting into some form if he is going to be our third best midfielder. Otherwise we will continue to be impotent in getting the ball out.

IMO, we should play Wilson on the ball and Wangas on a wing this week.
Cassisi could tag Ablett after doing a good enough job on Lappin last week. Surjan, Mahoney and Ebert should give us enough bite on the forward line, while Dew and Wangas can play the wings. Wilbur, PB and Cornes in the centre square.

Yeh I like the idea of Wilbur in the middle, but he coudnt possibly last long in there. I think it would be great if he started the match in there however.

I'm really disappointed for Troy Chaplin. He's hardly had a chance to prove himself seeing that he rarely sees any action in the second half. I know it's about matchups etc but wouldn't you rather play a 100% fit player? I'm not sure that picking Mahoney is such a great idea, much as I love the guy.

Likewise portentous. Chaplin had 11 possessions to half time last week and then was kept on the bench for the entire second half. I thought he was fantastic and is going to be a very very good player for us in the future. The more experience he gets the better.

I'd prefer Surjan to be running off the HBF or BP like he did against Adelaide in the Wizard Cup, added much needed pace, rebound and shut down his opponents with discipline...something that could carry through the team. That could free Wilbur up to run into the middle and maybe give Surj some exposure on ball when changing over.

I can see the logic of Pettigrew over Chaplin. Obviously hoping he can play as a small if required. Though I'd still rather we'd dropped Chaplin for a true small - especially now with King missing, forcing Ottens to do a lot more rucking. It's already looking too much like the lack of an extra small will see us die in the arse in the last quarter again :( Hopefully by that stage we are far enough ahead. We should be.

Oh and Cochrane - grrr. Ezard or Eckermann would have been a better choice.

I'm not complaining about the Grew being selected Andre-just the way both he and Chappy are being treated. Why pick them if they're only getting half a game and then getting dropped? If it's a match-up issue, why aren't they sighted after half time? It can't be good for their confidence and match fitness at this early stage of their careers.

Well im personally wondering is there some sort of clause in the Chaplin contract that he cannot be on the field after the first half. Showed some good form against Brisbane in the first half and is nowhere to be seen in the second half, the same again last week against Carlton, WTF is going on there.

You can argue a similar case for Pettigrew, he palyed really well in his game against Brisbane. He had 4 kicked on him by Welsh in the showdown but not much he can do when the ball was getting down there every 2 seconds of the game, a couple lace out he was never going to stop, yet gets dropped the following week.
