You definitely dont recover as well as you did in your 20s as you click over 35 (noting im only 38) but i also think youre alot better at focusing and balancing every other aspect of your life as you get older.
i'm only 26 (lol) and i've found that my physical recovery is pretty good, i'm generally just torched from work and i'm mentally cooked which is the real mind killer.

Bit of friendly sparring after class today, just body shots. Unfortunately my partner is not one you want to spar with, bigger, stronger, tougher, not that skilled but doesn't matter, needless to say I got a fair touch up. Anyway the irritating part was one of the other blokes was watching, after it he said "oh geez you copped a few punches there, all that work you do on bobbing and weaving didn't help hey?"

I replied words to the effect that I didn't see him doing any sparring and not sure he'd do better, he took my point. Seriously the "experts" who never spar but know more than Freddie Roach shit me.

Ive told this story elsewhere but i recall McGregor v Mayweather at the pub and it being ****ing PACKED (it was our local and we went most weeks for whatever UFC card was on but we had to actually line up to get in this day).

Anyway, fight starts and every ****ing dude is an expert, Conor is throwing a million full blooded punches and hitting nothing but air or maybe a glove and all the "experts" are loving it "Conors gonna ****ing destroy him" "Conor has to be up on the scorecards".

Even as a ****ing novice it was painfully obvious what was going on but my god ive never seen so many blokes become certified experts on a sport that mostof them would be lucky to watch once a year in no time at all.

Sounds like the average bigfooty poster haha.

but seriously, its amazing watching and listening to average joes, some clearly in no physical condition, commenting on professional athletes.

My fave during the Mc vs May fight was watching brahs take off their bum bags and fight with other patrons

Yeah that's one reason watching fights at the pub can be annoying, they're the exact people that should try sparring, might have more respect for boxing/MMA etc

I think particularly with combat sports you need to be respectful, given the crazy thing they do for a crust. Not that I don't respect professional golfers but compare that with a boxer in terms of risks etc there's no comparison.

The duality of my two experience in the gym last week.

On Monday I felt really weak as though I had just started going to the gym for the first time for no explicable reason whatsoever.

On Friday I felt invincible to the point that I beat my Deadlift PR by 10kgs and finally lifted 250kgs and I felt like I could lift heavier.

Two of the guys in my gym apparently decided sparring isn't hard enough, on Wednesday they were playing a game where when someone gets hit they both do a burpee and then continue, ****in nutbags.
I mean insanity is needed in the gym.

I always found that people (especially blokes) don’t seem to appreciate the difference between their shitty little footy/pub scrap and a professional fight.

We all understand that Rory McIlroy or Dusty or LeBron would absolutely embarass us but Jon Jones “nah he’s trash on the feet, I’d just get inside and light him up”.

If doing MMA, boxing and in particular BJJ taught me anything it’s that the gulf between the pros and me was at least as big as every other pro sport if not more because you have to have a pretty unhinged mindset to put yourself in harms way like that.

yes im unsure how the comparison between combat vs non combat came into the fore. so to speak.

respect in any sport must be given. In fact, I was talking to a bunch of white collars who excel in their fields and they all say the same thing. respect your debtors and creditors whether they are blonde hair blue eyed or have black hair and brown skin.

Yeah I think a lot of people who have never trained think they could just turn it on if they had to, it's not exactly the case that's for sure. Sparring helps you get used to being punched and eventually able to execute techniques without freaking out and putting your chin in the air.

And there's an old saying I'm sure you know of "there are lots of levels to boxing". This is probably the case in all sports but if someone you're fighting is on a higher level the results can be quite stark, and violent of course.

I mean golf is very difficult to be good at of course but you're not getting punched or anything, very much non contact and would be way scarier to compete in I think. Not that I don't respect golfers like I said earlier but I do have a higher respect for sports that are more dangerous, as a combat sports fanboy this is probably common.

You go out and play 9 with Tiger your pride will be broken after.

You go for 5 rounds with Canelo Alvarez your pride AND face will be broken after. Probably some ribs too.

I think I’d rather a head punch from Canelo than a body shot, not a great choice to make though.

Funny during the sparring a husband a wife were squaring off, as soon as the bell went he jabbed her in the guts! She complained to me, I said to keep her distance haha

I've never heard anyone say with an ounce of sincerity that jon jones would be easy work 😂

Its a hyperbolic example but watching UFC nearly every weekend for about 5 years the casuals would always have a way to win every fight.

"Why doesnt he just stand up" was the standard response to anyone fighting a decent grappler.

I'm sure for DDP v Khamzat and JDM v Islam this was bandied about. I think the Islam fight showed how good JDM's prep was actually, never really in danger of getting subbed (of course he couldn't get off his back)

He trained Jiu jitsu with Craig Jones that's why he never got subbed. But ironically the just stand up call, well if he trained more concentrating on actual wrestling, he could of trained to get off Islam, get back onto the feet, reset and go from there. Hindsights 20 20 but looking at it in retrospect he prepared poorly for this fight. He should of literally got back onto he's feet using wrestling techniques, not try to use Jiu jitsu in an MMA fight against one of if not the best grapplers of all time in Islam. That and not preparing for the barrage of leg kicks that came he's way.
