I've always used Plum Apartments Southbank.

Edit: just notice they are now under new management.

I've used them before also, they are the building adjoining Plum.

Arden street hotel isn't a bad option if you want something cheap and clean not far from the CBD.
I'll be doing a few days on the gold coast then off to Brisbane to watch is smash the Bears in May. Also keen for the Essendon game, Patty might need our help.

its pretty much across the road from spencer st station ....
For the younger ones Spencer St Station was renamed Southern Cross Station a few years ago.

Victoria Hotel is just Ok, but it's cheap right in the city (little Collins st ??) 10 minute walk to the G, probably 15 to Etihad.
Other option is to get on the websites like Expedia, lastminute, wotif, hotels etc and put in your parameters.

Flights for the Carlton game with Tiger is pretty cheap right now. $59 leaving Adelaide 9:45am on Friday and $59 going back to Adelaide leaving on the Sunday 2:30pm. there is also a $45 flight at 8:20am on sunday as well.

I really love the Victoria Hotel, stay there often. It's kind of cruddy in a charming way, if that makes sense, and the location is brilliant. Same price range as an Ibis but with personality. The best value hotel in the Melbourne CBD, IMO.

What you save in fares you lose in accomodation unless you have friends/relies to stay. Unless you have other things to see/do?

How does tiger fares compare to other airlines that weekend?

Definitely agree. I haven't stayed there for the footy but was there for a few days when AC/DC last toured - in 3 days we saw AC/DC, Jersey Boys and AC/DC again - and close to pretty much everything in the CBD. Has a decent bar with a nice social aspect to it. Rooms range from modern luxury to basic 1970s décor with not a huge difference in price.

From the 1st of January 2015, all trams in the Melbourne CBD are free

Should be fine for Etihad, but if you're not doing the march (lel do it!) it should only be a small walk to the MCG

about $20 or $30 difference, Tiger are much better since the ownership take over last year.

It's definitely quirky.
I used to stay in the $20 rooms as a party goer in the mid 90s. They were shit but had a bed and sink and very convenient.

Tiger are having a sale ending midnight Wednesday, however it is only for travel 240415-280515. The only games that fall into this period are Brisbane at the Gabba and Carlton at the MCG. We have a game at Traeger Park but Tiger do not go to Alice Springs. The SCG game is just outside of the sale period.
Return to Melbourne is $67.50 sale, $90 non-sale. Return to the Gabba is $124.60 sale, $166.20 non-sale. The best I have been able to get to the SCG is $160.00, ($65 to Sydney + $95 to Adelaide) but it is a 7.40 match so one nights accommodation will also be necessary.

These prices are likely to be sold out very soon like the last sale but prices are still pretty low.

Pro tip: Jetstar offer 10% off price match if you find a lower price on a different airline.
Not much can be done Adelaide-Melbourne apart from the 14:30 tiger flight can be matched to the 14:30/15:20 Jetstar flights if tigers cheaper.
more info on the JQ website
(I saved over $200 by price matching)

Planning for either the Carlton game or Hawthorn. during the season, plus hopefully the big one in September. Carlton game is currently winning atm.

Travel via Train on the Friday, head to MCG for the Richmond v West Coast game.. Then Carlton v Port on the saturday arvo & Bulldogs v Brisbane at Etihad on the Saturday Night.

come home Sunday via Firefly bus.

Just need to find a good cheapish CBD hotel stay at.
