David Clifford!

The best young player I've ever seen! He has literally everything you need to be a top footballer. The Irish are shitting themselves that he will be scooped up by an AFL team!

Remember the name!

Just googled him and the Irish media certainly rave about him and compare him to the all time greats of gaelic football.

Can't see anything linking him to an AFL club though. Seems certainly worth a look in if he's after an AFL contract.

Wasn't the very same thing said of Mark O'Connor this time last year?

This fella is on a different level to any of the Irish recruits that the Aussies have seen before. He's still only 18 years and completely tearing it up at the minute.

Conor McKenna is playing great stuff though and he wasn't as hyped as Clifford is. So it doesn't mean Clifford will transfer those skills to AFL.

One thing i can't underage how Irish fellas can land in Australia and 5months later they're playing top level AFL. If you are athletically gifted then you have a good chance of getting a gig it seems!

I haven't heard praise this large since Collingwood landed superstar Marty Clarke :p. Jim are most of the successful Irish AFL players genuine stars at the gaelic game though? It seems whenever there is hype about their skills with the roundball they are quite underwhelming (e.g. Marty Clarke, Tommy Walsh, Colm Begley) whereas the ones who aren't hyped tend to be the ones who really make it - like Zach Tuohy (and maybe Conor Mckenna) - who from my understanding (happy to be corrected) was a good player but actually seeked out the opportunity to be a professional sportsman.

Marty Clarke was a superstar of the underage football as well. He was a completely different style of player though. I never thought he would have made it at AFL level as he was a play maker rather than a running type player. I hated to see Marty Clarke playing half back in AFL, he should have been centre half forward for County Down pulling the strings for all the attacks with his unreal passing and vision. It was a shame to see such a genius in Gaelic Football stuck down back in AFL. McKenna was a very good underage footballer and we would have known about him but people in Southern Ireland wouldn't have heard of him. His attitude and drive seems to be the things going for him. Skill will only get you so far.

Tommy Walsh went to Australia too late and was unlucky with injury. Touhy played for a county that wasn't that good when he was underage but he stood out for them as a good player and I remember him scoring some cracking goals. It's hard to know how young players translate from being class underage footballer to mixing it with the big boys. A lot of the AFL thing for Irish fellas as well is leaving home and going to the other side of the world. When the lads in Ireland go to soccer clubs in England they're only a 45min flight away from home and they will have people coming over to visit. Flights to Ireland form Australia are so far away and so expensive that it's hard to pop home for the weekend so homesickness will set in.

This Clifford fella is the complete footballer. There will be uproar in Kerry (Tadgh Kennelly's County) if he goes and if Tadgh Kennelly sets it up he will not be able to go home to visit Ireland anymore

Sorry but I just don't understand why there would be so much outrage around gaelic circles if he left. I would have thought people would wish him luck if he decides to choose to go to a sport where they actually pay you a good living verses none at all and the opportunity to set up him and his family's future.
