Irrelevant Finals Statistics

Conversely the likelihood of recording another major break in the statistics would be even more remote, would it not?

I remember last season, in semi final week. The cat's got bundled out in straight sets, all the talk was that they were the first team since us in 2007, to finish top 4, and go out in straight sets. After that, all the purples were on their board saying "what are the odds it happens twice in one week, when it hadn't happened for 7 years prior"

Well, we all know how that ended (gloriously for most of us:D)

My point is, I don't know what my point is, but things happen, sometimes in groups, sometimes randomly, and sometimes when you least expect it. Sometimes things don't happen too, so there's that also.....

In 06 we drew at Carrara and got belted in the second last game of the year.. same thing happened this year. Now we must just win the flag :)

Hmmmm, hard to say - I feel like it would require an actual study of sorts, if one hasn't been done already. I mean, there are arguments for both sides - on the one hand, they have likely used heaps of energy and effort already to buck one trend. On the other, a team that's good enough to buck one trend would be one of the better candidates to knock over the next in line (that is, first 8th placed team to win a prelim).

Basically, it's a case of loss-of-energy (causing them to lose after only knocking over 1 record), vs potential momentum (causing them to carry their record-breaking momentum forward).

Without looking into it though, I'd imagine that they'd likely falter here - the Sydney game was a bit of an aberration, in that between injuries and the efforts of some of their better players, they played so far below the level of 4th placed that 8th place managed to beat them. The same doesn't appear to be the case for this weekend.

Don't forget they tanked to be 8th to dodge the possibility of travelling to Adelaide. If they'd played true to form (ie able to beat Richmond) they'd probably have been 7th and we'd be dealing with Adelaide or Richmond instead.

NOt a finals stat technically, but,

every visiting team* against West Coast this season has faced a 50-point deficit at some point.**

* does not include Freo as a visiting team

** Hawthorn the only team not to finish at least 50 behind (twice)

West Coast have never won a premiership in an odd year. Looking at the numbers 2018 is the year.

No thanks. Right here, right now.

We are due a Premiership in an odd numbered year. Since 1st two were even numbered & 3rd one was odd numbered.

All 3 even Bud

Yeah - had 2005 on the mind (last time I went to a GF). But even more reason that we are due an odd numbered year Premiership!

That said, GF appearences.
Odd, Even, Even, Odd, Even, ...

(that's possibly predicting a loss tonight & Premiership next season)

Is there a stat that favours North? besides the Star Wars one?
Great thread.

In both of our AFL premierships, we beat two non - Victorian teams during the finals. If we win the flag this year, we will have beaten Sydney and West Coast.

Also, our leading goalkicker in all four premiership years is a player who was recruited from another club and who had a W initial. (Wade in 75 and 77 and Wayne Carey in 96 and 99 - on the grounds he was transferred from the Sydney zone as a teenager.) Our equal leading goalkickers this year are Petrie and - you guessed it - Waite.

My mistake!

Not only that drawn Carrara game but some eerie shit that is so similar to 1992

- Cricket World Cup in Aus/NZ
- That drawn game at Carrara against a lowly Qld side we've never lost to
- Started season with 1 win from first 3 games
- Lost a game in Hobart
- Thumped away from home in our second last game
- Won first week of the finals against Hawthorn

And the stars are aligning, my friends because there's also this...
- In 1992 we won our last 4 games after that second to last H&A game thumping. The 4th game being the GF. In 2015, we've won 3 in a row and have the GF to play...
- Our opponent was Geelong, who we played twice and beat twice in the finals in 1992. They also happened to lose a close GF 3 years earlier. This year, we're playing Hawthorn for the second time in the finals, having already won the first game and they just so happened to lose a close GF 3 years earlier.

And here's a bit of a personal omen that's even eerier!
- In 1992, the first final against Hawthorn was the only game I went to. I was 13 at the time and my mum took me for my first ever final.
- This year, the first final against Hawthorn was the only game I went to. My nephew is 13 and my mum took him for his first ever final.

THE STARS AND PLANETS AND EAGLES ARE ALL ALIGNING HOLYSHITOMFG!!!!
