It's even wise that we are beaten by those arrogant poms. Unfortunately I work with many poms and they don't shut the Fu$k up and continue to rub it in. I hate them.......with a passion!

They will take wickets although not necessarily cheaply. If Ponting pulls the pin because he is not captain then so be it but he is not our best captain.

They need to take the Trevor Hohns approach and give a few taps on shoulders. In fact bring back Trevor Hohns. At leaast he made decisions
 
You can't pick Ferguson, he's just not in form at the moment. The year out with a knee injury has held him back.
The whisper I heard a while back was that Krejza "didn't fit". I'm not even certain that he's even in Tasmania's squad.
One mate of mine is a big George Bailey fan & reckons he's been given a raw deal by not having had a chance yet.

Can anyone see the improvement that the fielding coach (with the baseball background) Mike Young has brought to the squad? I certainly haven't over the past few days.

Just as an aside from someone who has watched it for years; what a joke South Australian cricket is. It's so poor that it can't produce 11 cricketers to make up a team. I know there has been a long standing tradition to get interstate & overseas players to bolster SA's ranks - Bradman, Sobers, Richards, Garner, Favell, Mallett, Jenner, Hawke, Gillespie are just a few that immediately come to mind - but having Cooper (NSW), Klinger (Vic), Christian (NSW), Blizzard (Vic), O'Brien (NSW) Edmondson (WA) & Cassell (Vic) currently playing in the Shield match against NSW borders on the farcical. There has to be an enormous shake up of the game over here, but I don't believe that the officials have the stomach for radical change. Best be conservative losers & jokes than anything progressive.

Krejza played in the most recent Shield game for Tasmania. Not sure what he has done this season (CA's site is shithouse for that), but he should be under consideration. They will wander back to Hauritz sure enough.

Disagree on your take on SA cricket though. While it is a shame they can't produce a home grown XI, they are giving some solid cricketers an opportunity to stay in the game. And let's be honest here, Victoria (Rogers, Wade, Hastings), Tasmania (Birt, Cosgrove, Cowan plus a myriad of others over the journey), NSW (Watson, Hauritz), WA (North, Beer, plus a fleet of quicks over recent years) aren't that much better.

Krejza's played 2 games & taken 4/98 in total.

It's a shame SA can only produce a home grown 4 (12th man Lang is also from NSW). But if SA only serves to give solid cricketers a chance to stay in the game, they are failing to nurture talent in their own back yard. If Steve Finn was born in SA I have no doubt that cricket would not have been his game of choice (unless of course he went to PAC or St Peters). Factionalism is rife in the SACA, the old school tie is one of the greatest weapons, there are too many grade teams & the teams SA have put on the park in the last 10 years sit at the bottom of every ladder. The 20/20 team was the exception to that rule, but it's amazing how well you can play when Afridi & Pollard are belting the cover off the ball. Other than that, SA's batsman are underachieving & generally cannot cope with playing away from the cosseted surrounds of Adelaide Oval. Being bowled out for 27 by NSW in Sydney two seasons ago is testiment to that.
Our grade system does not prepare players for first class games. SA's administrators don't want to admit that, but the results say otherwise.

I don't know it. Apparently he was blabbing somewhere about it. That's all I know. Wasn't teasing, just a question.
 
My brother saw Paul Collingwood at Kew Golf course while playing today. Apparently he is a freak.
 
Back to the thread title... I’m torn! True, I could barely care like everyone else about the 3 game series against SL. (Anyone even remember that was played?) But I’ve just spent the morning reading all the cricket articles in The Age and HUN. The current state of affairs while pretty diabolical makes for some fascinating discussions and reinforce that I really DO care about cricket.

It’s probably partially nostalgia recalling how the Australian team of the 90s started to be formed in the dark days of the mid 80s but I this has actually stirred my passion for the Aussie team again. The massive catch being there really seems to be a dearth of players pushing strongly to be in the team.
Players like Hughes, Khawaja, Smith, Marsh, Ferguson, George, McKay (bowlers are tough to even think of names!)... they’ve looked better in previous seasons.

The next few years are going to be tough... hopefully a few youngsters will now get an extended run to prove themselves and build that nucleus of the next competitive Australian side.

I would be very, very surprised if Hughes did anything remotely decent in the Perth test. I think Hughes has been harshly done by in the past, and believe that if he had been given more time would have worked it out.

Selecting him for this next test is a huge gamble: if it comes off it might just be the making of him; if it doesn't it could set him back even further.

I hate Hughes' technique, but he's been damn effective. Watching Peterson's widely-spaced stance, walking to the pacemen and swinging, hardly engenders me with confidence, but he makes it work. Point being: there have been plenty of ungainly and unorthodox batsmen who have succeeded, no reason why Hughes couldn't be another. In theory that is.
 
Tim Lane wrote a good article about the selections for the 3rd test. I have a feeling this test will end extremely badly.
 
Smith at six is insanity. He's a very talented cricketer, but we need a specialist in there to stiffen the batting. Playing Beer is just bizarre too.

How/why is Smith there in front of a specialist batsman? Hughes opening is a huge gamble, then replacing an underperforming specialist batsman with a young all-rounder. It will be a rout.

Langers, your thoughts please.

Bizzare selections for Perth alright, i would have selected Paine and retained Haddin as a batsman, seems like they are experimenting to see how long they can make the tail.

Having watched the lads trundling the ball on day1 in Briz I'm not at all surprised Doherty has been left out for Perth. He bowls far too quickly to get any turn, doesn't allow the ball to flight, loop, or drop on the batsman - all key weapons for a spinner. His best weapon is that he seems to be pretty fiesty, though that doesn't get batsmen out. With his style i would only pick him for an ODI though really Hauritz can bat far better..

Johnson was appalling, how he can run off the rails to this extent beggars belief. Its like the coaching staff have said, 'yes Mitchell, your wayward deliveries are really worrying the batsmen, keep working on them'.
At one point he was actually getting a bit of reverse swing happening in S.A - whats going on?

We are truly a team full of first change bowlers, nobody could really be looked at as a consistent strike bowler. Our spinning weapons are so limited we may as well bring back Bryce Macgain for another trundle.

I'm over it - when Gilly, Hayden and Symonds gave it away the entertainment factor went with them.

Also:
Ponting should give it away or drop down to #5, sad to see him failing so regularly, its becoming like rope-a-dope.
Clarke should only ever be chosen for tours of the subcontinent.
North is not up to the standard required of a decent #6
Time to select Cam White as the new captain, he may be an average spinner but he is an explosive bat!
..and somebody should get on the phone to Hodgey and lure him out of international retirement..

I reckon we're missing Symonds in the field in a big way. Seeing the dropped catches and the lacklustre attempts to stop runs just highlights how important he was. We seem to lack anyone with that urgency and intensity in the field.

Who cares if you miss the odd meeting to go fishing when you can play like him?
