I started following Carlton in 1979 when I was little.

I went to the 81 grand final as a ten year old and remember my father telling me we won that day courtesy of a great backline.

Interesting to read Bolton tonight admit we have started this rebuild focussing on the backline first.

The defence today was exceptional. Marchbank, Silvagni and Docherty intercept marked everything.

Plowman had a critical play late.

Simpson led from the front as usual.

Is history repeating? No flag this year of course but the point being this side is being built from the backline first.

We don't even need Weitering down there. Not yet anyhow.

Then we add Harry Swan McKay up forward.

And we have an indigenous no.5.

And multiple Silvagnis.

And a young lad over 190cm who can jump and run like the wind and who's hairdo reminds me of a famous no. 43.

I ask again.

Is History repeating...?

No history is not repeating.

For the first time as a club we mentioned the word 'rebuild' and appear to be following up.

For the first time as a club we went through a proper process to pick a coach.

This part of our history is without precedent.

It might not work, but what we are doing now has never been done before like this.

Docherty A.Silvagni Plowman
Simpson Marchbank Williamson

Byrne to replace Simpson in time

Macreadie as back up

Now think Weitering can stay forward but useful swingman if needed !!

We have gone about this in a very un-Carlton like way, cannot possibly be repeating history.

Most good premiership sides have a rock solid defence. Geelong in the 90's proved you can't win without one, regardless of how good your forwards are.

love the way you retired rowe and replaced him with silvagni even though he is older than rowe (but not by much)

History is sort of repeating... in that our current coach was a teacher... and the coach from our two greatest modern teams was also a teacher...

Outside of that coincidence... nope... insert Split Enz song here.

Whitehead was more of a mainstay that year than Hogg in that role

Such a shame his career was cut short, certain 200 gamer otherwise
more a winger than back pocket was adrian. ended up suing the club though so happy to relegate him down the pecking order. hoggy was a straight up back pocket. ripping good bloke. always had time for us drunks in thd social club.

Seems to me in recent weeks Williamson in team has meant Simpson has tended to play more on the wing, which is where he made his career to start with. Hence why he is getting a bit more forward and kicking a few goals again. Simpson probably play as the 7th defender/2nd winger role at moment.
Plowman stepping things up this year is starting to mean Doch and Simmo down there directing traffic and setting things up is not as much required. One of Doch and Simmo there is starting to be enough and frees one up to get further down the ground to become more damaging in an offensive manner too. I really cannot wait to see Byrne again at some point in back end of season.

The club is creating its own history by taking a longer term approach, with so many young players from the draft and from trading.

We are investing in finding and developing players, and in having them come through as a group.

Before the salary cap penalties, we 'bought' Kernahan, Bradley and Motley, then came Naley... of course we cannot do that any more ...

But we are not going the Hawthorn Sydney top up player route either. We are valuing our draft picks.

We are building a list as Bolts reminded all yesterday, we are watching history unfold in front of us, number 17 will be so sweet.

We took on a 17 year old who we thought might go top 10 the next year ... Raso.
Last two bottom age players we have taken are Williamson and McKay.

I see some of the teams flying at the moment and most have backline flaws but are getting away with it because they score a lot .

I've seen one finals type game this year and that was the Dogs v GWS.

The footy being played now is unlikely to be the type you see in September , that type of footy needs rock solid, reliable and understandable defence.
