I stopped worshiping the individuals a while ago. The jumper is all I care about. These players are not fair dinkum that is obvious.

Their hands are tied short of heavily effecting our onfield performances due to imposed suspensions. Unfortunately there's no correlation between no drugs and success so they have no grounds to do so. It's in the AFLPA's hands entirely, blaming the club is silly.

My theory is topping up during the game not racking up 10 lines before the game and running 20 kms that won't work obviously.

It's my theory it's ok if you think I am full of shit it won't change my point on view.

You are now on a different tangent. Test positive with Coke or speed on match day and there is no 3 strikes . You are instantly named and will be banned , was 2 years now I think has gone to 4. Do that and you have broken the WADA code and suspension comes. There is no evidence of these things being used in a match setting. They are tested for regularly and I am not aware of any positive tests.

What we are talking about is the illicit drugs out of game/work situations the AFL intoroduced with the 3 strike policy. That's what needs revoking. No one is suggesting a positive for cocaine on match day shouldn't automatically get you 4 years. WADA clearly sees that as performancing enhancing.

How did Cousins never test positive? It was common knowledge back in the day. I use to bag a fellow WA colleague all the time about it. He is the Lance Armstrong of the AFL IMO!

Again this is a bit of a conspiracy theory. The AFL don't do the match day testing, ASADA do. Why on earth would ASADA be with holding positive game day results. It's what they exist for.

If you know you can get away with something you do it, if you know you are going to get caught and face consequences you don't.

You would have to think that a random mass hair testing of most players in the AFL would be a fair glimpse on young adult society in Australia as a whole. That being the case, it would not surprise me at all if around 70 to 75 percent of the players hit the recreationals in the of season.

Players do it now because they can get away with it even if they are busted. What needs to happen is a tough hard stance, you want a football career or you don't, zero tolerance. You get done you get fined and suspended, you get done again its a much larger fine a much longer suspension, you go again your cooked, out, career over. We will lose a few good ones along the way but it will sort these kids and the competition out.

Drugs are a social issue, it's not their employees responsibility to clean up their social lives. Clubs should only get involved if their social lives stop them from doing their jobs effectively. If this occurs, they should be initially counselled and then if not effective, fired - just like with the rest of society.

In terms of AFL footballers " our brightest and our best" only refers to their footballing ability. Whilst some of them may be our brightest and our best in other areas, it never has or will be the norm - particularly socially.

This is a well considered response and you make some excellent points, many of which I agree with. In the end I think we are coming from different ends but arriving at the same place.

Agree its an issue across society but, whether the players as individuals want it to be part of the job or not, the AFL is a high profile industry in the public domain, its image and the image of its players not only reflects society at large they also influence it. Kids grow up wanting to emulate their real life heroes. Players are happy enough to reap the financial rewards that come with being a public figure and they should then be prepared to accept the responsibilities that go with it. The rewards are high for the stars of the game, not taking the illegal substances everyone else is doing should not be considered too high a price to pay.

No doubt their will be Swans supporters at the game today calling our players druggies or some such trying to get under our skin and no doubt there will be Collingwood parents there with their children, wishing they didn't have to hear it.

You simply can't tolerate your staff taking illegal drugs if you are aware of it and you have to send a strong message given the high public profile of the industry that it will not be tolerated, off season or not. Penalties need to be harsh enough deterrents, whilst not career ending the first time and its a given that they get counseling and support.

I make the point that one of the reasons this is such a problem for the AFL is that the penalties are simply not a deterrent, they are not harsh enough. Basically, players don't need to pull their heads in until they get caught.

An aside, what if one of the players who tested positive was Keeffe or J Thomas?

I told him to grow up and concentrate on his football and the fact he got a 2nd chance means he owes the club and its supporters. He proceeded to then call me a hypocrite for calling him out and named 7 other players that he said I'd be a hypocrite for supporting. He back stabbed those blokes, threw them under a bus whatever you want to call it. All 7 are playing tonight.
He also called me a few choice names, campaigner being one of them.
The blokes a moron, doesn't deserve to play for a club I've financially supported as a member for 20 years.
