I admire how much he chases and tackles and would definitely consider him a genuine starting 18 player but I've seen a few too many times in the last 2 years where he's had a chance for a shot on goal but passes it off that puts the other player under pressure.

Even in times when it's more than acceptable for him as a forward to have a shot he seems to look for the pass that ends up costing him the 2-3 seconds he originally had for the shot. Am I the only one out there who thinks he needs to be a bit more selfish around the goals?

I remember years back, possibly 2010 or 11, he tried to goal when Pav was alone in the square & missed. Got a bit of a spray.
Since then he's looked to pass a bit too much. Sometimes I'd prefer him just take the shot, don't think it's a big problem but

I'm not sure he understands what his role is now that he's not the 2nd focal point. He's so focused on his role as a defensive forward that he's forgotten that as a forward, he's expected to generate goals.

Either that or he's been told that his role is a defensive forward, and he's sticking to that to the exclusion of trying to be creative or responsible in the forward line.

It might be a minor on the odd occasion type tweak ... maybe. I think he's playing quite well. His ability to hold his feet and play both tall and small and the way he worked in the last quarter with Balla and Walters in particular to create mayhem fwd of centre for us is just perfect and all he needs to do.

Besides, I don't think he has a great 'snap it in the contest' type player anyway, compared to say Walters (who is sublime) or Neal types who seem to know where the goals are no matter where they are and can get it to their boot in a flash, I'm not sure it's his thing. Either way, I don't see it as a significant issue myself.

He doesn't play tall though.

If you are a small forward (and that's what Mayne is) and you can't snap goals then you shouldn't be playing. At least, not in the forward line. I think Mayne is a decent enough player but he's just not dangerous enough in the forward line. The only way he can kick goals is from set shots 40m out. He isn't even a long kick which would at least make him more dangerous on a lead.

... I thought he was amongst our best players on the weekend because of his pressure - he caused a lot of turnovers, something not reflected on a stat sheet.

^this^

Probably not another forward in the comp who can't snap goals. If Crozier was even half as manic defensively, he takes his spot/role all day every day.

A spot for Mayney until something else presents itself; far from automatic 22

Yes, yes, ****ing yes. It's great that he has a selfless aspect to his game, but for **** sake just have a shot sometimes.

It's not uncommon to see him take possession 35-40 out, and automatically look to handball. I'd rather a point from a rushed snap than constantly seeing his teammate get smashed because Mayne's dished it out to someone with 3 opponents around him.

I'd drop Mayne ahead of Ballas. And I really really want to drop Ballas.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Duffy your time is now. Have a cracking game for Peel this week and a spot in our forward line is yours.

Duffy Tabs Crozier
Clarke Pav Walters

It'll never happen but i can still vent.

I said during preseason that if you can't kick goals you shouldn't be getting games in our forward line.

**** defensive pressure. Scoreboard pressure beats it every time.

I dont know about too selfless, but I would love to see him actually hitting his handball targets. Rushes so much he misses 2 metre handballs to static players.

But he handballs cos he cant snap. All he has (arguably 'had') is a gun set shot routine out to 40m.

My theory, and the training watches can confirm either way, is that Ross does not want anyone snapping unless they absolutely have to. Very few of our guys are any good at it so they can't possibly be practicing it?

Has Duffy been kicking goals in the WAFL though? I'm certain that if Mayne or Balla played WAFL again, they kick a bag.

Play your way in, play your way out.

Think 1 goal between two forwards in the last 2 games is a good definition of playing your way out.

From reports I don't think Duffy, Tabs and Clarke could do too much more to play themselves in.

For those who think it would be nuts to drop both Mayne and Ballas, if you had to drop one of them which one would it be?
