Is our defence underated

I know that stats aren't really indicators (ie. Dwane Swan 44 touches) but scoring is one stat that can't be over looked, it will win or lose a match.

Currently we sit 3rd on the table for score against, and we actually sit 4th is score for, so in fact we are hitting it right up front and down back.

Now taking into account we haven't played either Geelong or StKilda i think the scoring stats show that we are doing ok.

People are saying that our midfield helps out blah blah blah, but isn't it modern football that a teams midfield helps out the back to clear the ball, you rarely see a team now now get their mids back to help clear the ball, as they are the ones with the skill and the game style these days is to run in numbers from the backline, so saying we are only good cause our mids help out well thats they way the game is played.

We have soem great backmen coming through, two years ago did Bower set the world on fire?? No, look at him now, he is a very good backman for us and a good link in the chain, Jammo another young backman who is solid down back and playing with a shoulder that will have a reco at years end, but still holding his own, Joseph is another young palyer playing down back in a stopage role who has burst onto the scene.

I must ask, did Geelong just get their tough backline overnight, or did it take a few years to gel and build....i think we know the answer.

So as season 2009 we currently sit as 3rd best defense and that is the way it is, we are far from the worst...interesting to note the Hawks are 5th worst in defense, injuries can't be used as an excuse as if they are meant to be the great team they are they could manage, geelong seems to cover it just fine.

After we play Geelong and StKilda then we can assess.

Your team is 7th for defense and 10th for offense...can't expect to play finals with that can you??
This has nothing to do with Essendon, so i have no idea what you're on about. But seeing you want to discuss it, before the Geelong game, we were ranked third in the competition for defence, just shows you how close the competition is.

You still have Geelong and the Saints to play who are sure to give your mob a bit of a hammering, so lets see what they do to your pathetic defence :D

Anyway, we'll see who gets the last laugh because Carlton is an average team with too many passengers and that is why you will not make the finals.

Essendon is an average team with too many Aboriginals, and that is why you won't make the finals. :thumbsu:

controversial

On our defence, under rated, hmmmm no. But I think it will be very good in a year or two. I can't think of a younger back 6 right now than ours?

Probably Essendons.

Hurley, Pears, Hooker, Dempsey, Winderlich, Daniher.

... Thornton pushes up our age!

Just out of curiosity, what do you base this on?

I'm told the shoulder is totally fine now.

You forget your place.

Run along.

Can someone run the following post through babelfish for me and translate idiot into English? :thumbsu: :o
No mate if anything it's overrated. jameson got beaten by anthony 2 weeks ago cause hes got no strength and lateral turning circle. Bowerr is ordinary only gets help from thronton, who is soft and turns the ball over too much to oppositon players. waite was ok but has no defensive side . i reckon krezeur should be used in the defence because he is big and has a dcent turning circle
kthxbai.

Certainly not under-rated

Jamieson: Quality defender
Bower: Good spoiler but can't kick and panics when he gets the ball
Thornton: Can't play on quality players, only skill is in chipping around
Waite: Carried our defence this year but out for the year
Austin: Needs more time to develop

Unfortunately none of our half backs are quick and can run through the lines

Would like to setanta take big forwards - did a reasonable job last year

you are idiot cause i just having my say on these public forum i no i cant speak a good english but give me chance to learn and to become good english.

Trying too hard, Sunshine. :o

Our Defence has conceded the 3rd least amount of points. End of story. It is travelling quite well and given its youth will travel alot better moving forward. Alot to like with it actually. Add that to the fact that we have won the third most amount of quarters and it tells you we are on the money. Just a little bit of inexperience and youth has cost us a couple we should have won, but that will go. 4th best attack as well, so we must be doing something right.

Specifically I have been very impressed with many of Bower and Jamiesons games and in the last 2 weeks Austin has really buoyed my spirits with some very good football. Throw in AJ, Stevens and Scotland for smalls and its pretty solid. Thorton and Armfield are handy reserves.

So yes it is underated

if we take out thornton and jamieson then we got no backline

hmmm yes I see your point,...in fact if you take out Kreuzer and Hampson we have no rucks either.

P.S. I was making fun of your comment as it is quite unreasonable to say if those 2 players aren't there we're no good, etc, I think if you take out any 2 first team backman from any other club they will struggle with their backline. In this case your saying no Thornton no Jamison (plus no waite atm) we have no backline well no ****en shit, the're our 3 best defenders.

On a side note though if we were to go with your theory and thornton and jamison happened to go out of the side for some reason, I still think we could reshuffle to at least form a reasonable defense, albeit a weak 1. Sentanta would go to full back, Bower to CHB, Austin to take the 3rd tall, Anderson could come in, plus we still have the small defenders in Joseph, Armfield, carrazzo, scotland, grigg. So I think our backline is stronger than we think. Plus Hartlett could come in or bannister if we're desperate.

Defence is overrated by most Carlton posters on this board. Comes from a combination of blind faith, and a little insight.

Defence is underrated by most non-Carlton posters on this forum. Comes from a combination of ignorance and blind ignorance!

Oh jeez, that is how it should be :thumbsu:.
