I know that stats aren't really indicators (ie. Dwane Swan 44 touches) but scoring is one stat that can't be over looked, it will win or lose a match.
Currently we sit 3rd on the table for score against, and we actually sit 4th is score for, so in fact we are hitting it right up front and down back.
Now taking into account we haven't played either Geelong or StKilda i think the scoring stats show that we are doing ok.
People are saying that our midfield helps out blah blah blah, but isn't it modern football that a teams midfield helps out the back to clear the ball, you rarely see a team now now get their mids back to help clear the ball, as they are the ones with the skill and the game style these days is to run in numbers from the backline, so saying we are only good cause our mids help out well thats they way the game is played.
We have soem great backmen coming through, two years ago did Bower set the world on fire?? No, look at him now, he is a very good backman for us and a good link in the chain, Jammo another young backman who is solid down back and playing with a shoulder that will have a reco at years end, but still holding his own, Joseph is another young palyer playing down back in a stopage role who has burst onto the scene.
I must ask, did Geelong just get their tough backline overnight, or did it take a few years to gel and build....i think we know the answer.
So as season 2009 we currently sit as 3rd best defense and that is the way it is, we are far from the worst...interesting to note the Hawks are 5th worst in defense, injuries can't be used as an excuse as if they are meant to be the great team they are they could manage, geelong seems to cover it just fine.
After we play Geelong and StKilda then we can assess.
