Everytime people talk about the top 10 or 20 guitarists of all time, Slash is rarely if ever mentioned. From Guns n' Roses to Velvet Revolver he's been consistently awesome. IMO he's massively underrated and is one of the best rock guitarists of the last 20 years. I'm not saying he's the best ever, or even top 5, but surely he deserves to be up there?

I think his work often remains unnoticed because Guns'N'Roses were perceived as a bunch of c---heads, but most of his work on their albums and the VR stuff is excellent. To an extent, the less grandiose style of VR maybe doesn't show him off as much as the old GNR stuff used to (and when they played live in Melbourne, there wasn't a truly memorable solo to be had for the whole gig), but it shows how he can fit into both types of sound. One of my favourite guitarists to listen to, without a doubt.

Would be in my top 5 favourite guitarists of all time, yes massively under-rated for sure, the November Rain solo is my favourite solo of all time, I'd put him top 50 rock guitarists of all time and probably top 25 metal guitarists of all time too.

Has there ever been a bigger waste of talent than what Micheal Jackson got him to do on Black or White?

Cracking guitarist.

No actually it was a great idea.
Michael Jackson has excellent people running him and someone must have suggested getting Slash in.
It gives Jackson some credibility.
Doesn't matter what Slash does as Jackson's fans hardly care about listening to good music.
It's more about publicity and image.

Slash is a very classy player who has a nice sound.
Is he underated? No I don't hink so. Plenty of top guitarists around who are less known them him.

It depends.

I've heard many Gnr fans who listen to very little outside of Gnr say he is the greatest guitarist of all time, which I certainly disagree with.

Then I've heard from many music elitists, many of whom hate everything Gnr, write him off as a overrated hack, which I also disagree with.

I'd rate him somewhere between those extremes. I love alot of his work, but there are better guitarists around. November rain solo was the song that got me into the air-guitar. :p

But GnR aren't metal...

I love Slash, I think he's amazing. The solo in November Rain is possibly the greatest thing he'll ever play and definitely the standout moment from any GnR song. To answer the question though, no I don't think he's underrated, it's the majority of the guitarists in the lists around/higher than him that are overrated. Eddie Van Halen is usually the one I see on top of the best guitarist lists, he's good but he's not THAT good.

You can't talk about underrated guitarists and not mention Buckethead. People write him of either because he looks stupid or because he was the Slash replacement, thus making him no where near as good. I hated seeing him play for GnR, here's an amazing musician and he was on the way to becoming sort of a household name (obviously required new GnR to not be crap) by playing something written by Slash. It's much like Jose Feliciano being most known for covering "Light My Fire".

if anything i thought he has been overated.

apart from his November rain solo and a few others in gunners, he has failed to do anything memorable in his other projects.

'November Rain'?

Sheesh. Try the end solo in 'Sweet Child 'O mine', or as was said, 'Mr Brownstone'. He's a pretty good guitarist, but not for the sold out love ballads.

Exactly. But if you actually a musician and were going to get Slash to play on a song for you, wouldn't you get him to play more than three chords?

Who on earth is buckethead? what a name!
lol!

And who'd have picked that he looks stupid...

Unfortunate that he's made himself known as the bloke who plays with a KFC bucket on his head... he's quite an accomplished player, and his solo work encompasses many different styles, although hard rock and metal anren't THAT evident on a lot of his albums.

He has since been replaced by Ron Thal (aka Bumblefoot) who is of the much the same style as Buckethead. Musically very proficient, but I'm not sure how well the whole thing will gel with whatever direction Axl has decided to take the band in. Slash was such a good fit.

Of course it was good to get Slash on there, but I think what he meant was that he hardly showed off his guitar playing ability in that song - anyone could have played what he did on "black or white". Van Halen's solo on "Beat It" was what should have been done - that was awesome stuff.

Slash is good, but overrated IMHO - The problem with Buckethead is that he goes TOO overboard with the virtuoso tech metal shyte, as if hes trying to tell us 'Im the best in the world' which sometimes goes over board

Not a great song writer either but meh

November Rain
Coma
Sweet Child
Rocket Queen (from live era)
Estranged

they are my favourite Slash performances, I've probably forgotten some though.

Spot on! Slash's solo on Fields of Joy is awesome.

I don't think Slash is underrated, I would prefer under appreciated because of his image & the band he was in. Same with Ace Frehley, another axeman that doesn't get enough credit.
