just another revenue stream for the AFL to improve the next TV deal.....

unless the best play the best its hard to give the competition any credability...

with the lack of prize money, schedulling considerations and the sponsorship restrictions placed by the AFL on the state league clubs I can see why our best clubs have declined the opportunity......

if the AFL wants to get serious

1. increase the prize money
2. remove sponsorship restrictions so state league clubs can optimise their sponsorship opportunity

Mickey Mouse comp designed to get games into GWS...

Agree with both of these, which is why the leading SANFL clubs have snubbed the competition. In addition, clubs apparantly are being forced to wear different guernseys in this comp.

Also, the competition will more than likely only run for 1 season before the 9th game of the AFL will take over this timeslot in 2012.

What a bunch of insular wet blankets we are in Adelaide. Always looking for reasons not to do something.

Well done to the three clubs who put their hands up. Hope they go well in the competition AND in the regular SANFL competition.

Ditto! I'm disappointed my Double Blues didn't take up the offer!!!

I think is a disgrace that the top clubs have turned their noses up to this. What an opportunity to get out and play some games in front of a national audience. They claimed there wasn't enough finical incentive... Well if you win the thing, get national coverage isn't there an opportunity to get some more sponsor dollars? I bet the players are pissed they are not getting the chance to play.

I like the concept, but its a shame the top 3 local teams chose not to play. Surely, national exposure would be a great reason to play. Id love to see Central get the credit they deserve on a national level, rather than just in SA. Was interested in seeing us play, but now Il just have to back in the SA teams (unless its Port ofcourse!) :thumbsu:

The biggest problem was that alot of the SANFL clubs weren't allowed to use their existing sponsors.

For example the AFL directed that Norwood wouldn't have Fairmont Homes (a 6 figure supporter) on their jumper.

If they can't support their major sponsor during the point where they're getting the most coverage it seems a bit fantastical.

The top 3 declined due to the above but the next 3 were happy to oblige how does that work?

I wonder who will commentate?
Hopefully whoever it is, does some homework regarding the players and teams involved.

If it's just some condescending Victorian who would rather be somewhere else this will deteriorate pretty quickly.

I also believe the AFL won't allow Holden to sponsor Centrals in this comp. Would be a complete slap in the face to a 22 year sponsor if Centrals entered the comp with an AFL supplied sponsor.

The AFL is also stipulating new guernsey designs in this comp as well.

Actually the top FIVE SANFL clubs declined, it's the sides that finished 6-8 (West, Sturt, Port Magpies) that will be participating.
West, North and Port

I'm not suprised Centrals were told no to Holden (AFL connection with Toyota - Geelong only has Ford now because it came first)
AFL saying no to Norwood and Sturt is a little shit though

I could understand if Norwood's major shirt sponsor was Coopers, why they'd be turned down, but think it's wrong if their current sponsor (Fairmont Homes according to poster above) is not allowed

I wanted to post about this yesterday, but I was too angry to type.

Joke.

Ditto again. :thumbsd:

The competition is a farce, that's why the sensible clubs declined the invitation, I follow the AFL and love it, but I absolutely love the football club I've grown up with, and to enter was not in the best interests of Norwood.

We will not be dictated to by the AFL. If they were serious about the 'League of Champions' everything would be in place by now, rules, conditions, overall information, this competition will be a one off feature to benefit the future waste of time and 18th club in GWS, why should we be a part of and contribute to that?

I'm not blaming one side or the other exclusively. From what I understand, all have handled this poorly.

The AFL is overstepping it's bounds if it's trying to dictate what sponsor the clubs are allowed to have.

Don't hear about that with any other inter-league competition anywhere in the world, why is the AFL special?

No wonder some clubs declined.
