Heres what the English press has to say on the matter

'So cocky are Australia that they plan to rest Gilchrist from the next 2 games, giving an international debut to the dashing NSW batsman-keeper Brad Haddin'

Now days, the wicketkeepers has to be able to bat. If you were the selectors and you had to choose between the following 2 players, who would you choose:
1. Keeper A - magnificent batsmen, would make most teams as a bat, averaging mid 40's, wicketkeeping not quite up to standard but acceptable.
2. Keeper B - ordinary batsmen, average in the low 20s, brilliant wicketkeeper, easily the best in the world.

Common Sense would tell you keeper a. keeper b may save you 5 or 10 runs in byes, if that. While keeper a will get you around 40 runs of the bat.
You may say that keeper a could drop some catches, but keepers very rarely drop catches, maybe one every 5 tests.

DIPPER - I read in the local newspaper that Gilchrist had flown back to Perth to prepare for the next one day game here on Sunday. Not sure if that's the case or not - It would be tough for the selectors to drop Haddin after one game, but also the Perth crowd would feel cheated for not seeing their state cricketer play at the WACA

WCE2000, that one dropped catch could cost the game. The keeping to spinners is especially crucial. With our good batting line up the extra bat is not needed and the best wicket keeper in the world should be chosen.

Hey Dipper,
They shoukd realise Australia can afford to be cocky when we have won every game so far we have played in the one day series (7 games) and the fact we haven't lost a game all summer!

Haddin was the logical choice, gotta look to the future. Plus hes an explosive batsman who will destroy attacks in the future. Good on him.
