It's safe

It's safe, phew.

For those that like such things, disregard if you don't.
But the hawthorn era teams of the 70s then 80s then now yields such a formidable 22. No club can easily match it.
Just shows how much elite talent they've had.

B. Ayres Langford Burgoyne
HB. Hodge Knights Lewis
C. Platten Mitchell Crawford
HF. Brereton Franklin Riolli
F Dunstall Hudson Jarman
R Scott Tuck Matthews (c)
I. Salmon Roughead Buckenara Wallace

Hence all those flags.

Let's hope we develop more elite so we can over the next few decades match and surpass them
No Richie Vandenberg? ;)

To rate the youth of club lists
1. GWS
2. WBD
3. Coll? / GCS? / Melb? - are the teams in that conversation for third.

We're up there amongst those better few, led by Grundy and Moore and others to follow. But others are catching up and well in that mix.
St Kilda, Essendon?

St Kilda, Essendon?

St Kilda lack great youth. Starting to accumulate some pieces but much more needed before they build a good team.

Essendon have Daniher who is their equivalent to Moore. Otherwise they have some recent high picks but overall they lack a quality young core.

Don't have either team in that top 5 youth conversation.

Bit rich given his players haven't been required to dispose of the ball when being tackled for the better part of 3 years. I mean, in the first quarter alone Breust was caught 2 or 3 times red handed with no free awarded. Over the entire first quarter, they must have been caught at least 5 or 6 times. No free.
Even while watching the replay today, I lost count of how many by QT.

Gresham, McCartin, Bruce, et al? In reality their only senior blokes absolutely smashin it are Roo, Dempster, Montanga and Steven. Their forward line is shaping to be as formidable as Roo/Gehrig/Kosi looked like it was going to be in 2004.

I have them ahead of Melbourne and Gold Coast, probably us as well.

The Saints best players are those veterans - Riewoldt, Steven, Montagna etc as mentioned.

McCartin is often concussed. He has yet to establish himself. He can become a very good key forward, but doesn't yet look like he'll become one of the premier options. Tim Membrey is a good component up forward. Josh Bruce was excellent in 2015 but only good this season. It's a good young trio to have coming through and learning off Riewoldt is a bonus, but they're all more good AFL standard forwards than great forwards.
Gresham is a good first year player but as a sub 180cm midfielder he is more projecting to become a low level component than a lead midfielder. Seb Ross came on this season and is a reasonable midfield piece. They've got Dunstan/Billings/Acres etc who are all good.
They're starting to add some pieces but I'm still shrugging my shoulders.
They have no next star. No Riewoldt, no Hayes etc.

I definitely don't have St Kilda ahead of Melbourne, Gold Coast or Collingwood.

If I'm to combine the youth from Collingwood/Melbourne/Gold Coast/St Kilda and create a top 10 list of players (born in 1994 or younger) I'd have (to give perspective on St Kilda's lack of top end youth):
1. J.Hogan (Melb)
2. B.Grundy (Coll)
3. D.Moore (Coll)
4. P.Wright (GC)
5. C.Oliver (Melb)
6. Petracca (Melb)
7. De Goey (Coll)
8. Viney (Melb)
9. J.Martin (GC)
10. O.McDonald (Melb)

And Gold Coast adding Jack Bowes and Brad Scheer through their midfield (top five and top 15 on my draft board respectively) will again slightly improve their young core this season.

I'd probably if I'm to describe youth as 1994 or younger go with (by club)
1. GWS
2. WBD
3. Melb
4. Coll
5. GC
6. Adelaide
are those teams with the better youth
-
From there Sydney/Carlton/St Kilda/Essendon etc are in the mix and to be placed in some order depending on the value you place on star power or quantity of good but not star level AFL standard players.

10. O.McDonald (Melb)

If you were to add Carlton to that list of clubs, where would you have Weitering?

Weitering I view as a potential all-time great key defender and the best young key defender in the competition. The only problem is I view Grundy as the best young ruckman and Hogan the better of the young key forwards (born 1994 or later).

Cripps also has a case to be higher given his extremely high midfield numbers, and after Bontempelli he is the next best young midfielder in the game. But as strong as his inside game is, he lacks the hurt factor a Bontempelli has and as a midfielder due to positional scarcity he slips to 4.

I swear to god.. I am now certain and cannot be proven otherwise that Geelong Fans are the worse.. My feed just lit up and they haven't STFU up years and now because their arch rivals go down they are popping their head outta the wagon again.. Such an ugly head. These people don't see pass their own rears

Over here in the west the eagles fans dont loke to acknoweldge our four flags in a row. I just laugh and smile at them and remind them they have no idea of the history of the game.

Makes me laugh alot. Anyways carry on

I'd swap our century old 4-peat for a hat-trick over the next 3 years any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but it's like the Greeks being almost too proud of their history but really not achieving enough in the present. (I'm Greek so don't flame me).

Not surprising that Eddie has bitten back at Clarkson's whinge. A reasonably fair and balanced reply by McGuire though.

Eddie McGuire said:
"It's laughable," McGuire said on Triple M. "It's been the record since 1930. Everyone has accepted it and everyone understands it.

"It is just ridiculous when people [say] that.

"If you want to line them up side-by-side on achievements, fair dinkum, they [The Machine] are miles ahead of what has happened in the last period of time.

"Let's not be silly about it, OK?"

"When he bagged the umpires then had a crack at us, I thought 'Oh mate. You've done such a beautiful thing going into the rooms to see the Bulldogs afterwards. Shake hands and just keep your head up mate'," McGuire said.

Yes Eds comments were fair and reasonable.
Clarkson can be a whinger at times.
His comments were churlish and rude, did him and the Hawks no good.
Was salty

So Leigh Matthews and Alastair Clarkson don't think our 4 in a row counts because it was under a different system, well I guess other clubs must have won 4 in a row under that relatively easy system right? No?

Well let me take a wild guess then that the 2 coaches in question are the two coaches that won 3 in a row and choked on the 4th attempt!

In that case unleash the Ed, let him out of his cage to do what he does best (set the record straight) then lure him back into the cage with a signed photo of Bucks and lock it for the next knob that can't do simple math!

4 > 3 minnows!!!

Eddie had another sly dig in humour during our netball announcement. After listing our 4 teams he said we've won 4 before and with 4 teams we can win 4 in one season.

Clarko is a great coach and well done on the Theepeat, as much as the outburst was ridiculous we are kidding ourselves if we wouldn't think the same with shoe on other foot.

You could argue that if not for the new expansion clubs Hawthorn may have exceeded the Theepeat.

And we have our own president who makes regular fopars so we should keep that in mind also.

Glad to maintain our record fwiw.

There appears to be a new contender on the horizon so it may be only a few years until we revisit the same dialogue about the finals system back then...

Cmon Doggies do us proud

No I'm pretty sure I could still do the math, and if they all believed that so much why were they so desperate to win 4 in a row?

How come they had no problem treating it as the record before they choked and now suddenly 3 in a row is enough?
