Would those 2 kick more if he wasn't playing there?? Probably, but I take your point. The thing is when Kennedy isn't there and he's got the number 1 defender he's hardly putting blokes to the sword. Good player but certainly a 2nd or 3rd forward.

In his only season without Kennedy he kicked 53 which was 9th in the AFL and 8th for key forwards with Milne and Betts in the top 10.

Half the clubs in the comp didn't have anyone kick 50 that year, 11 this year.

I still reckon Darling is as good as he's ever going to be, but people set his bar pretty high.

As I said mate a good player, gets a pretty harsh run with being seen as a bit soft.

I'd say he's intermittently soft.

His mark against Adelaide running back with the flight was gutsy, but then he drops chest marks whenever he plays Hawthorn.

Tends to fade in and out of games in general. Had a big first quarter against Port, then kicked his 3rd goal in the second quarter and finished with 3 for the game. Doesn't have the 5, 6, 7 goal games that Kennedy has.

Darling is a good player, gets rubbished as he shat his pants a couple of times in some big games but to say he's a spud is ridiculous. He'd likely walk into every other clubs starting 22.

I think he's a smart player, wonder why when WC have been crying out for big bodied mids that he hasn't been rolled through there. Although I must admit I don't watch all that much of WC unless they are playing against us.

The Darling in midfield experiment has been tried in spurts but fails every time. He doesn't have the ball winning ability and pretty average below the knees.

Keep him up front, I'd venture to suggest that without JK he kicks more goals as most of our entries into the forward 50 goes in JK's direction. He kicked 50 when JK was absent for most of the year, he has the talent for sure.

Would eagles fans take this trade?

Gaff, Darling, 2018 First round pick for
Coniglio and Nathan Wilson.

Had this discussion with a diehard eagles mate

...the f***?

No way. Losing two first 22 players before they are even 26, and a first round pick for essentially a midfielder (albeit a promising one) and a player we already have loads of that are similar.

Interesting... what about a straight 2 player swap?

You're going to need to throw in a Jack Darling replacement, otherwise if JK goes down we'd be cooked.

It doesn't make sense as a trade just surprised with how keen he was to get rid of those two and we discussed value returns- he basically would do a straight swap but a 1st rd is too much he was hesitant on a second

I disagree. I could see him replacing Kennedy in a few years

I admire your optimism.

Vardy is 26 and hasn't shown he can play as a permanent key forward at all, let alone at the level of one of the best in the comp.

Kennedy kicked 80 goals the last two years and would've again this year if not for missing 5 games. Franklin kicked 80+ in 2008, 2011 and 2016. No other current player has reached that mark once, and only a couple have post 2000.

Our best hope (other than snaffling Jesse Hogan) is playing Darling at FF and hoping he can be a 50+ goalkicker again.

He pisses me off with his head flinging, but he is a quality player. If he said he wanted out of West Coast, I think every other team in the comp would be interested.

An arguable career-best game in a top of the table clash. Has been immense this year, and doesn't go missing, pops up when you need it at regular moments.
