the word legend is often overused in sport, but when it comes to Jack Dyer, it's more than fitting.

There are very few footballers that can truly lay claim to transcend club rivalry and be loved by all clubs supporters for what they have given to Australian Rules Football.

Jack Dyer was one such man.

Will be greatly missed by all.

"and he will be going up to Heaven like a pair of giant testicles".

R.I.P Captain Blood.

Sorry to hear that.

Condolences to the Dyer family and the richmond footy club.:(

Jack Dyer's death has been discussed on an Australian/American site I frequent. Just had a laugh with an ex-pat Richmond supporter about the famous Dyerisms mentioned in today's Herald Sun. Who could ever forget Jack, Lou and Bobby on "League Teams".

Jack Dyer - mourned even on the other side of the world.:(

Say G'day to Ted for me.

I met the man only once in my life - I was so overawed i could barely get any words out.

Because of you Jack Dyer I followed Richmond. Now 32 years after my first Tiger game I shed a tear.

A part of Richmond died on Saturday, a big part.

You will live in my and tens of thousands of others memories of decades to come.

You simply were the Richmond Football Club.

RIP.

I feel like I've lost a favorite grandfather.

Rest In Peace, Captain Blood ... a true gentleman and immortal of the game.

And well done to the Tiger Cheer Squad for that amazing banner ....

"HEAVEN'S FOOTY TEAM CAN NOW TAKE THE FIELD FOR THEIR CAPTAIN HAS ARRIVED"

R.I.P. Jack.

You will always be the heart and soul of the Tigers.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who shed a tear. This man made footy on radio and TV for 30 years. Newman, Hunt and others are pale imitations.

Never saw him play, but my dad, who played for Post and Telegraphs in the Mid-week League, played against him for about five years, during the 1930s. Jack used to play for Yellow Cabs. These games took place on Wednesdays, and the reason they had about ten League footballers in every team was because the pay in this competition was 3 pounds a game, as opposed to the 30 shillings a game they got paid in the VFL.

These VFL footballers used to play two high quality games a week. Crowds of 10,000 at games was not uncommon, because entry was cheap, and there were so many unemployed, with time on their hands. Makes me laugh when I hear today's players whinge about playing another game six days after the previous one.

The only thing my dad ever said for years about Dyer was how dirty he was, as a player. He also said how lucky he was to have an even bigger thug who played with Fitzroy in the Post and Telegraph team. Not even Jack was game to take on this bloke. BTW, my dad played in the back-pocket for his team. The full-back was Jack Regan, of Collingwood.

About twenty years ago, I asked my dad what sort of player Jack was, apart from his dirtiness. He then said how brilliant he was for a big bloke. How he could ruck, play forward or just about anywhere. How great a kick for goal he was, and how he dominated the competition for so long.

Aussie Rules will never be the same again, now that Jack's left us. Nor will commentating.

I think it's significant how many people have mentioned how much of a gentleman Jack was. Seems he may have even been that rarest of men, off the field, a gentle man.
