Thin frame, no real weapons, doesn’t hit the scoreboard, can’t stick a tackle….but here’s 3 years. Another List clogger the Club could do without.

He's getting paid close (if not) to the minimum.
No one on that salary who is acquired as an unrestricted free agent should have their acquisition labelled as a "monumental **** up."

This is the result of what happens when there's been a long void of depth on the list. That is, a number of players were acquired to be band-aids int he immediate to help, whilst providing longer term solutions via the draft, and hence it is unrealistic to hit on more than a handful of these types of players.

Wehr's acquisition is not going to stop the team from acquiring any player in the future given his low salary, and it certainly won't stop them from looking to upgrade this position in the near future. So I only see how labelling his acquisition using the language you have described, as somewhat of an egregious overreaction.

He’s going to spend the next 2 seasons in the SANFL before being delisted, how on earth is that good List Management?

How much deadwood do we need to recruit before realising it’s a road to nowhere?

50% of everyone's list is dead wood

Ours smells a bit more because theyre older.

How do you come to this conclusion?

Internally, when they were putting together their list last off-season, the thinking was that Wehr was the direct replacement for Atkins. The intention at the time was to have a break glass in case of emergency type, who would help particularly at SANFL level.
Nah. You don't give somebody a three year contract to be a 'break glass in case of emergency' type.

A more sensible approach would have been to offer Wehr a short term contract, or better still, taking a punt on someone like Ted Clohesy who at 21, has far more upside.

The guy has had a very unlucky run with injury since joining Port, that doesn't mean he's incapable of being a good AFL player. Until his final year at the Suns he was a certainty in their best 18 and was their leading goal kicker in 2023. Let him get some games under his belt and some continuity, then we'll have a btter idea whether he's good enough or not. I like the idea of him being on the wing where he can use his athleticism and skill and where he's got some freedom to move.

The idea of recruiting a bunch of mature aged players was to improve the bottom end of the list in the short term, providing more consistency in the SANFL to fast track the development of young players, and hope that a few of these players would become regulars at AFL level. To expect to hit on every player is fanciful - their approach merely gave them more throws at the dartboard.

The player in question is clearly not at the level any of us supporters would want in the AFL side. But when you consider he's on the minimum combined with reasons I've stated in earlier posts, it's not this crazy decision that is massively hindering the list going forward as you are carrying on about.

Nah. You don't give somebody a three year contract to be a 'break glass in case of emergency' type.

You would be acutely aware as anyone of some of the ridiculous contracts (in terms of length) that this Club has given out particularly over the last decade for players who were no more than fringe players (at best).

I don't like the 3 year deal - I just don't see why there needs to be such an overreaction to it given it doesn't constrain the list management team going forward one iota.

And they added a lot of young players over the last two off seasons so I really don't think that adding a 28 year old in this instance is the primary reason this list has a major problem in it.

Apologies for the confusion, referring to Wehr. Looks like Carr has earmarked Luko for a wing role with Wehr likely to make way.

That’s my main point Chewy, there was absolutely no need for it. Who cares if he’s getting paid minimum chips to be here, my concern is the wasted List spot for a further two years.

I actually agree with you regarding the contract length. But playing devil's advocate, neither you or I know the details behind the negotiations that led to him getting the 3 year deal.

Given he's on peanuts they have the flexibility to cut him a year early if necessary to acquire another player - they did get rid of Pasini whilst he was still contracted.

It's certainly not something I'm concerned about in the least. They have a ton of cap flexibility and there will continue to be a reasonable turnover of the list in the coming two off seasons, and Wehr's contract won't impact any of it in the slightest.

3 year deal on a modest salary, oh no better close the doors, what a disaster.

Don’t all draft picks get a minimum 2 years, even the ones picked late that quite often don’t even play a game?

Mid season draft picks plucked randomly from state leagues get 18 month contracts.

Was Wehr not offered a deal at GWS? If he was, why would he leave for a 1-2 year deal elsewhere?

And it’s not like he was a complete spud at GWS he played 14 games for them last year and they were a pretty strong team.

His form hasn’t been great so far but it’s not much different to Watkins and makinlay. Makinlay survives off doing 1 or 2 good things that make you go wow but then disappears or does monumental **** ups.

He was offered 2 years from the Giants and the Bulldogs also were after him which is kinda funny to think seeing how bad he’s been.

Lukosius is not, and never will be Westhoff. Please stop playing him wing.

Luko has qualities enough to pull that off. He also has flaws enough not to.

Currently, I think CHB would be his best chance of avoiding becoming a waste of money for Port.
