Jack Newnes has barely missed a game of football since his debut in 2012 and he improved as a player, in the eye test as well as statistics, every year up to 2016 and then maintained his good 2016 form into 2017 with pretty identical numbers.
This year, he had an injury interrupted preseason due to knee surgery and has to regressed as a player. The 15.8 possessions is the least amount of disposals he has averaged since 2013, his marking has dropped off as has his tackling. This has all lead to him becoming a whipping boy on the forum, with many wanting him out.
But surely he has enough runs on the board that we stick with him. Yes, there is no doubt he is having a rough year, but he has been a very dependable player in our team since 2012 and I would say he has been an important player since 2014.
I reckon many have been too quick to write Newnes off, especially when you consider he is 25 years old, so about to hit the prime of his career.
We all know of the importance of a good preseason and what happens when one has an injury interrupted preseason and Newnes’ 2018 is a case in point.
I expect that he will have a good preseason and become the solid,!dependable and important player we know that he is, not the version we have seen this year.
