BIO
Medium-sized midfield/forward who is strong around the ball and at the contest. Is very much an inside player who wins clearances and feeds the ball out. He displays clean skills and can take a contested mark. His inside clearance work in the last quarter of the SANFL U19 Grand Final virtually won the game for Glenelg. Has boarded at Sacred Heart College for two years so has balanced U19 football at Glenelg with his school commitments. Recorded a 14.08 beep test result at the SA NAB AFL state screening session, showing good aerobic capacity.

Burgo's Phantom Draft

57 – BRISBANE LIONS – JACK REDDEN
Glenelg, SA, Medium midfielder, December 9, 1990, 188.6cm, 74.4kg
(Draft range: 41-82)

The Lions have been strongly aligned with Redden and it is understood Adelaide, Melbourne and Fremantle are also interested. He could slot in at No.41, No.57 or No.69 for the Lions. Redden tested very well at the recent South Australian state-based screening, which has pushed his cause. Glen Dawson, Todd Banfield, Hall and Mitchell Banner are also likely to come under consideration.

Draft Profile

JACK REDDEN - Glenelg
DOB: 27/12/90 Ht:. 186cm Wt: 75kg
"Brisbane is very interested in Jack and Melbourne and Fremantle have shown some Interest. Jack's been a boarder at Sacred Heart College for a couple or years and is a midfielder/forward type. Very much an inside player who loves to feed the ball out and win clearances, which he showed during the under-19 grand final where he virtually won the game in the last quarter. Very clean with his hands and his disposal is pretty good. He broke his thumb early in the year and given his school commitments he played only about eight games for us. A quiet and unassuming lad but has a heap of potential." - Glenelg development manager

Draft Profile

Redden is a medium sized midfielder from South Australia who is very good around the clearances and winning the hard ball. He is a very strong mark and a nice kick and has shown the ability to play up forward at times and kick goals.

Draft Profile

No. 25 JACK REDDEN, (Glenelg, SANFL) 17, 188cm (6'1"), 74kg (162): Midfielder/forward who is good at winning the ball in close and has neat disposal skills. Very good at clearing the ball out of contested situations and feeding it to teammates (winning the clearances). Also has excellent aerobic fitness and represented SA at the U-18 tournament.

Graeme Allan says: "Jack is an inside midfielder from South Australia who featured in the U18 Championships earlier this year. We believe he has plenty of scope for development and could become a top-notch AFL player."

The FoxSports recap had him confused with Jarrad Redden...with Patful(l), Dalziell (who?), etc we always have a little confusion come draft day.

They had him at 202cm and 88kg and labelled him a "Developing Ruckman" and from the Eagles- what in the hell have we drafted here? They didn't say jack-squat about him, do they even know anything about him, because even the herald-sun website has us drafting Jarrad Redden:confused: Not happy about this pick 25:mad:

Graeme Allan – football manager
“We were going looking for midfielders as a position of need but we ended up getting the best players available at each spot anyway in terms of our approach to it. Our first three picks were midfielders which was great. We had to build up our midfield resources.”

Consolidated Draft Profile

Jack Redden - (IM) 9 December 1990, 185cm 74kg. SA/Glenelg/Keith

"rizzo: Jack Redden - 74kg - 185cm - 09.12.1990
Don’t ask me what it is about this guy, but I have a huntch. Think that he was probably starved a bit of game time, but has all the natural markings of a footballer in the making. He is a good mark, and has a nice kick on him. Has very good hands, and is a bloke that will get the ball out of a contested situation quite well.
Skills - Handpassing, Playmaking, Marking"

"Anonymous: Jack Redden: About 185-187 cms, 75-77kgs? Similar size to Dawson however he is a different player. Jack plays through the midfield and accumulates large amounts of the ball and uses it affectively most of the time by hand and foot. He is an inside mid who is very clean and composed around stoppages. He can also move forward to create/kick goals. He is the brother of Tom who was rookie listed to the Crows a couple of years ago. Another Sacred Heart College lad who played for Glenelg in the U/19's and Reserves. Also played S.A. U/18's against Vic Country and NSW/ACT wearing the number 36."

I would have thought the fact the last two "what the" picks we had were Dalziell and Patfull (both of whom are best 22 picks in 2009) would've calmed your nerves a little.

From what I'm reading here Redden seems exactly the kind of player we need and I trust the recruiters who know far more then all of us.

Could turn out to be a better player then all the name players people are whining about us passing on such as Robinson or Beams.

I have not read any one whining about us picking Redden, Black Heart. What is being questioned: Could we have picked him up with a latter pick considering he appeared to be a "hidden gem”?

All the other clubs have their Adelaide scouts - why hidden?

It is a matter of rating or grading prospects - if you get lucky you can eat your cake and have it too - Robinson almost lasted to our 41 pick but we still may have preferred Banfield.

And Redden may have been taken by Richmond at 26 or soon after - because other hopefulls had more publicity I wondered if we could have taken Redden with a later pick as it always feels good to draft a local boy - a Carlton spokesman said they had rated Robinson at 9 - in the event they didn't take him until 40 because they had traded their 2nd round pick - now there is some good luck.

Bottom line - we have to trust our recruiters in this tricky exercise.

Based on the Youtubevideo, and i know that is a really small sample, the kid looks pretty good.

Given his height he could probably stand to ad another 10 kg to his frame.

The part that got me was how smooth he looked with the ball and that he can take a good mark, his kicking looked pretty good as well.

If he can up his 14.08 beep test while adding some muscle to his frame, he could be a really good player.

He is six months younger than Rich and really looks it in terms of body development, probably will spend a lot of time in the magoos the first year.

Funny thing is over on the freo board some are whinging about taking Ballantyne so high and who does one freo supporter wish they had taken instead at pick 21?

"Would have preferred Redden/Beams/Trengove/McKernan/Zaharakis at 21, Ballantyne at 68 and then take Ruffles in the rookie draft."

Behind the scenes with the Demons on draft day
Mark Stevens
December 01, 2008 12:00am

With No. 35, there is a feeling it will be much more difficult. The Demons want a tough "first-possession" player to help out Brock McLean -- someone who can win his own ball at the stoppages and feed it out to the runners.
Jack Redden, a 17-year-old from Glenelg, is that player. His inside clearance work in the last quarter of the SANFL under-19 grand final all but won the game for his team.
Redden is not one of the 73 players among the AFL's list of profiles of leading candidates, but he has created interest elsewhere.
"We're very keen on a grunt player like him. We need that in our footy club," Prendergast says.
If Redden goes, the Dees will happily settle for the indigenous brilliance of former Bunbury boy Jamie Bennell.
He is not the inside player the Demons had in mind, but they believe he will be the next best available if someone spoils the party and snaffles Redden.

But the curve-ball came at pick No. 25 when Brisbane pounced on the "grunt" player Redden, who the Demons had pencilled in for No. 35.
"We were keen on Jack, and we would have loved to get him," Prendergast says.
"We knew Brisbane were right into him, but we thought Brisbane might have been looking at him for the next round. But we couldn't control that.
"We rated other blokes more highly than Jack at the 17 and 19 picks."
When Redden was snapped up, the Demons immediately set their sights on Bennell -- even if he wasn't the tough ballwinner Bailey was after.
They snare him at 35.

"I thought Brisbane might have taken him (Rohan Bail) at 57. He's in their backyard and he's had a good season.
"I don't know whether we did trump them. They trumped us on the Redden one. We might've got them on Bail."

Redden is looking like an intriguing prospect, he seems to have totally slipped under the radar of most ppl on BF and the journos, however it seems there are a lot of recruiters who were keen on him.

Will probably be the player I look forward most to reading updates on througout the year.

Im on the bandwagon early!

i think they meant jarrad redden, as trengove and mckernan are both rucks, and there doesnt seem to be a lot of love for zac clarke
