In his current form, he's adequate depth, that alone gives him the right to stay on our list regardless of what we've seen he can be.

Side note, would really like a young sudden impact midfielder from the draft this year. Let's raid the GCS!

Me likey! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

when he started to play well and the press jumped on and said finally JR has become the player we expected, it seemed to me he then took the foot off and stopped working hard on and off the field expecting the good times to keep rolling. With a few injuries knocking him down the line it just seems he does not have the desire to do the hard yards again. He came into those preseason games and his body was not up to scratch and he his skills were no where near what we needed. Time is ticking. He would be perfect but like Austin -how long can we afford to carry somebody?

I think he is such a confidence player that being in the VFL is actually detrimental to his game: that is he is down on himself simply for being there and that affects his game negatively. If he is to regain form it has to be in the firsts with an extended run. That was how Ratts turned him into a good player in the first place. But with our sights on the flag and others who are in form getting picked in front of him he is stuck in the 2s and that could be that for his career at Carlton I'm afraid.

A club on the rise would snap him up I think. He's young enough, experienced and a fresh start with the promise of game time would reinvigorate him. Bummer is we would get bugger all for him as things stand.

Source?

I doubt that the players take notice of anything the media say or write.

Huge assumption that Russell isn't a hard worker and lacks desire. The players still have him in the leadership group. The inner circle know him better than the mug punters. Better player than Armfield, Ellard and Bower who are in the side.

zee nailed it earlier in the thread.

No pre-season and injury niggles in the last 26 games have hurt him.

Absolutely JR is a better player - no doubt at all. But not lately. Everbody knows JR can play. Everbody knows JR can work hard. Everybody knows JR can have desire. Just hear it hasn't been the case for a while. I was the biggest JR fan before he started delivering. The lone voice praising the igniter.

His spot hasn't been taken, as much as his form has forced the issue.
I'd still sooner the best of Russell, than the best of Duigan.

Different defenders Harks.
Duigan is more of a shut down defender, whereas JR gives us more drive out of the D50.

Toss a coin really who you would take at their best. Maybe Duigs just.

I'm a big Russell fan and will give him until he gets a good preseason to judge him again. The only thing I don't like is his kicking style, cuts it like Suckling at times but it doesn't come off as good as Suckling's does.

One of Russell, Lucas or Buckley needs to replace Scotland at some stage, I'd be happier if it was JR.

Pretty sure JR had a full preseason just gone zee..

Nuh he definitely didn't. It all started before Qatar when his elbow was giving him trouble. In one of the videos from that trip he mentions to Gibbs that his back and arm are giving him trouble.

Of the next 3 training sessions I saw him in preseason, I didn't see him in full training at any stage.

Would love to see him given a go as an inside player or come in for Gibbs if he was put in as a midfielder - body big enough and athletic enough to provide some serious grunt - would match up well against most of the bigger bodied midfielders I would think.

His hunger is still there.

Kicking left a bit to be desired.

Still, would have in side over McLean.

ATM there are about 30 players ahead of Brock, and Jordan is one of them, was alot better against Fremantle than he had been against teams earlier in the season, hopefully with every game he gets closer to the full fitness needed and starts to string good games together.. But could well still be put up for trade at the end of the season, and if he is i think he would be looking to go back to SA and not to GWS.

Played a great game, the thing is that when he came runner up to judd in 2010 everyone was surprised because he wasn't the player to get in the best every week in the papers, but did the team things, and as finey mentioned last night on sen, those were the things he seemed to do by either helping out hendo or jamo or running into the right spaces to cut off space for the freo players to move into, things that can only be appreciated when at the ground and not on a tv.

He was very solid last night, after a little bit of a slow start. Obviously is very much a confidence player, and hopefully this is the start of a good run, because an in form Russell will give us a big boost towards 17 :thumbsu:

Too early to say Russell is back?

Love seeing JR back in the side and doing well. :)

Great to see him go back with the flight in the contest where he crunched Pavlich.

I reckon a good game vs Saints would sort his head out and then he would be back. Certainly took a giant stride in the right direction on Friday night.

We all saw how much Walks injected against Dockers. JR back to his best would be very similar in impact.

post game JR came past and I gave him a big high 5 and told him it was great to see him back doing well. He did not look all Hollywood like certain others but seemed really giddy like a kid on Xmas day. Think he is as thrilled to be getting back into the mix as we are.
Certainly needs a bit more work on fitness and kicking. That strapping on his elbow looks like it hinders more than helps
