Superb game tonight, particularly first-up off a long spell.

What is with the captaincy thing? I’ve never really understood co-captains anyway, you don’t need two, once the ball is bounced captains have no actual duties beyond what other leaders in the team do anyway. It’s not cricket.

But this one seems really strange... Melbourne have a perfectly good captain in Jones. He tossed the coin, he addressed the players before the bounce... is Viney a captain beyond just having a title? What’s the purpose of it? He’d still be a perfectly good and inspirational player without it.

All clubs do that. They have leadership groups etc. Question is why he had the captain label now and little else? Seems strange.
West coast did the same with Kemp/Cousins sometimes they need a mentor and the senior guy can let the younger one take some of the slack through out the week. Something like that

I think not having a genuine role like cricket means there's flexibility in having co-captains. Not sure if it's an issue.

Good flexibility to have when one of your co-captains (Viney) doesn't play as often as you would want him to - by no fault of his own. At the end of the day if a bloke isn't on the park that much then someone else is mostly leading the side. Given that to be the case I think its Viney that compliments the other captain as opposed to the other way around. I would stick with Jones/Viney next year then go with Brayshaw/Viney.

Also I think so they can share the off field duties as well. Lots of pressers, functions, photos etc for captains.

Can see how someone that’s not a Dees fan wouldn’t be able to appreciate how important Jonesy is to us. He’s the heart and soul of the MFC - insofar as I’m not even sure he’s best 22 anymore, I’d still be afraid to send a side out onto the MCG without him in it.

I went to a game in 2005 (iirc) and was surprised to see Nick Maxwell addressing the group pre game, Buckley was playing as well, iirc Maxwell was a nobody at the time, point is leaders show themselves, you don't need tonbe named captain to be a leader.

5 years later he's a premiership captain and AA, he wasn't a classy player by any means but those who call him the worst premiership skipper OAT have no clue.

Jones was/is getting on in age, has 2 young kids, probably needs a bit of extra time off to focus on his own game and family.

Viney won the B+F in 2016, really stamped himself as an on field leader capable of mixing it with the best in the trenches.

To me it made perfect sense that you'd have both. Jones takes care of most of the off field stuff and his experience helps the young guys in day to day football life. Viney drives the players at training and is a weapon come game day.

Unfortunately 2 injury prone seasons have impacted Viney's availability and hurt his chances of taking over straight up next year. I'd have no issues going with both of them again.
