Has shown glimpses previously (even got a couple of Brownlow votes) but then he proceeds to stink it up for the next month then ask to be dropped to the reserves.

Complete and utter failure as a number one pick and will go down as the worst player drafted at that position
only on bigfooty would you find such a floggish comment, the day after the player in question puts on an amazing, match-winning final quarter

I dont think he can prove the haters wrong at this point. Hindsight 20/20, There's no way you'd take him before pick 30. Not putting a line through his career, just saying that he went too high for a project KPP.

His confidence issues should have been revealed during his interviews with the clubs. I think Melbourne didnt do their due diligence when selecting him.

He was universally regarded as the #1 pick that season....the only question being whether the WA clubs would select NicNat if they got the pick.

As with Scully, it wasn't like Melbourne pulled him out of nowhere, everyone bar the WA clubs would have taken him at 1.

He was, but he was also still completing his VCE during his first year of being drafted if i recall. I wonder if the Melbourne recruiters got into his ear and told him to lodge a year early trying to lock him down.

according to player ratings.... had a forgettable day until the big last quarter.

All that proves is that he had a decent first three quarters, but then stepped up in the last when the game was up for grabs.

Did you even read that chart before you posted it, or...?

I read it as about 10th-12th best Dee in the first, barely noticeable in the second, worst in the third, best in the last.

Am I reading it right?

Could have sworn this is a repeat of a round 1 thread last year, either that or Melbourne supporters were 'bumping' comments after a very good display v Gold Coast...and the season did not go Jack's way.

The issue is that Watts has always been capable of a good moment, a good quarter, a good half and a good game. When has he ever put it together (besides when he was the leading intercept marking player for an arbitrary 6 week period lol) for any meaningful length of time? That's his true test, backing performances like Saturday up with many over the course of a season.

He played 2 good quarters and 2 bad ones
When he played well in the 1st and last we kicked 11 goals
In the middle he was quiet and we kicked 1

Now he isnt a brownlow contender but he is becoming far more important than people realise

He spent a fair bit of time off the ground because of a corkie, hence why he went quiet.

Looked good yesterday - hopefully a sign of things to come for him.

Needs to back it up again next week, though. Too often in the past he has shown flashes of talent but failed to follow through on it consistently.

I think that's a very fair assessment

Been very impressed with watts all preseason. Looks a changed player.

I'll wait til he puts more than a few solid games together but the signs do look good. He played with a purpose yesterday I haven't seen from him before, he's played good games but always had that lackadaisical demeanour.

Yes he will prove the haters wrong 8 years later, please! Think that ship sailed a few thousand days ago. Needs to prove it to himself and get on with it

He's still only 25yo this year, not like his career is coming to an end. I see a lot of Brendan Goddard in him, not necessarily in the way he plays but in terms of the "arc" of their respective careers.

Maybe - they also should not have let him play in 2009. The way they paraded him around on Queens Bday and in the papers leading up to the game was cringeworthy, I can't imagine what it would be like to have the weight and expectation of a 150 year old club on your shoulders at 17yo.

Ask any Melbourne supporter though and for so long the issue hasn't been what he does with the footy or how many touches he gets it's about how he approaches the game. He attacked/demanded the footy yesterday, I've never really seen him play with a resolve like that before. That wont show up in the chart you posted but it does bode well for the rest of his career.
