I'd just try and relax about it all. It's not ideal, and we'd rather he plays in games like last night. But it's February 13th; we've still got plenty of time until Round 1 and Scott said only last week he's happy to try him in the backline if Guthrie moves to the midfield (looking more likely after last night).

So, 14 rounds in, 1 game, 1 flogging, dropped. In the best in the VFL consistently over the past 5 or so weeks, including 1 or 2 BOGs. Everytime I see him in the VFL he looks a class above.

Ageing backline, crying out for an injection of new blood.

Really disappointed he hasn't had much of a run this year, but at the same time not that worried because to my eyes Smedts and Bews are playing serviceably down back.

If you think Smedts or Bews are a problem in the side you haven't been paying attention. Enright, who I will always love, has been playing seriously loose as has Mackie. Bews has played well for a guy in his first year. Smedts isn't ideal but he adds something and I have seen more of why the coaches persist with him this year, than I have ever before.

What's he doing wrong?

From the VFL games I saw he showed glimpses of the form that got him AFL games but he was fading in and out a bit. Not knocking him but the consistency was not there. He can play, has the skills etc but not sure if its fatigue related or maybe its just not his time yet.

I would love to know what the thinking is. I am sure if we asked Chris, he would give us a nice soundbite about 'Jackson has a big future and very much part of our plans, he has been a little unlucky.'

I think the reality is, he just hasn't got the balance right between attack and defend and he is getting some tough love. Enright and Mackie can be attacking flankers because they have learnt the basics of defending first.

Far from panic stations yet, Mackie was floundering for several years before the penny dropped.

I still think Thurlow is in our best 3-5 players under 21.

I think this is spot on. Bews being a bit stronger defensively (which we really need right now for opposition smalls) included with a good attacking side, also more physically developed, is keeping him ahead of Thurlow. I have no problem with that. I think they'll both play a lot of games for the cats.
