Have heard word that Richmond have put a sizeable contract Infront of him, Kelly situation holding up negotiations between Hopper and GWS.
Hope this is the case. Would love another big bodied mid like him

Imagine the list people are keen to get back a first round pick after losing it, so somebody of decent trade value will be up for grabs. Does he actually fill a need for Richmond though?

Definitely, we have an tonnes of hard running outside mids like Ellis, Menadue, McIntosh, Markov, Bolton will eventually play there and Naish coming through this year as well.
Our inside group drops off majorly after Dusty and Cotchin. Prestia is a long way off it at the moment and Hopper would bring something different with his ability to also play forward in that Clay Smith type role.
Hopper would be a better option than any midfielder available to us at our pick in the draft anyway…

Spot on, big bodied mid that will allow Dusty to play longer stretches up forward.

Perfect fit

Geelong have pick 20 (via carlton) and a 2018 1st rounder to trade, if he wants to go to geelong it will get done.

Ablett is 33 he will be traded for a pick outside the top 30 or geelong won't trade for him at all.
does Geelong have to trade back into the first round this year though? I remember reading something about that.

Nope the rule about having a minimum 2 first round picks over a 4 year span doesn't come into effect until 2019. The AFL didn't mention that when they first brought in the rule but made it clear in the last trade period to allow the Cats to land Tuohy...

I'd imagine you'll be near the top again in 2018 especially with ablett coming in. I doubt pick 20 and ~16-17 is enough for hopper

Very much fills a need.

Have heard we are targeting a young mid from interstate. Would be pretty happy if it was Hopper.

Would have thought a 20 year old gun mid would be great in everyone's team

Will Naish cost you 1 of your first round picks?

The herald sun says "yes" for click bait purposes but anyone who is actually watching the kids this year says "No". He's very outside at the moment and despite his kicking skills getting a good rap at the start of the year, at the championships it was a pretty different story.

It will be close IMO - your next pick is 50 after your 2 1st rounders. Most phantom drafts have him 16-20.

Historically father – son/Academy bids have come in later than expected each year. I remember Kennedy being ranked in the top 10 but not bid on until pick 13, Josh Dunkley was seen as a first rounder and went in the second. Twomey had Zaine Cordy in the top 25, same with Collingwood’s Brown last year and they both went beyond pick 35.

I think it’s a safe bet that Naish will slip past pick 18. Besides, in theory we could trade our first round picks for Hopper and let’s say….Gunston for arguments sake. We could then only match with our remaining picks outside of the first round.

I think things have changed that you will miss him if you trade out in the lead up. It all comes down to his points and worth. If your 1st pick is 50 then you won't have enough points to draft him if he is rated highly.

We had McDonald which was close to pick 8 and we had to use pick 8. Still dirty on the Eagles!! Our only top 10 pick in the last 7 years!!

dlanod - can you confirm? You're across the trading and drafting rules.

Naish is very likely to be bid on by Melbourne if they keep their first

You can trade down as much as you want, it just means you'll take a points deficit into the following year that comes off the pick in the round of the bid, e.g. someone bids a round 2 pick and you don't have any picks worth points left, you can still match it and have the points come off the following year's second round pick (and possibly other picks, if your second round doesn't end up being enough).

The only time you miss out is if the deficit is going to be more than the total number of points you have in the following year's draft (where each round is assigned the lowest number of points for that round).

I assume this is some inside info you've heard?
A lot can change from now until the draft. Guys like Oliver and Taranto were barely top 10 picks at this stage of the year.

I hope if it comes down to it the club will leave the romance out of it. Naish is a good player but far away from what our list needs.

Yep. Right now they need a gun outside mid, and Naish is near the top of that list

No the afl decided the 2 in 4 rule doesnt start until 2019. We might try to get an extra 1st rounder now if we want more flexibility in future years but its not necessary. I think we are more likely to trade out of this draft than into it.

Don't we go into points deficit for the following year if we don't have enough this year? We have x2 first rounders this year in hand, but we also have future first round pciks we can trade as well for currency, we're in a very strong position to hit the draft and or trade period for aggressively this year.

Players when they are coming off their first contract OOC and nominate one club only (which almost all do thesedays) almost always go for less than what they were picked at. For e.g.

Caddy drafted #7 traded for #15 and #55
Polec drafted #5 #14 and #34 traded for polec #21 and #45 = pick 32
Longer drafted #8 traded with #48 for #25 and #41 = pick 21
Docherty #12 traded for #33
Marchbank #6 traded for #16
Pickett #4 traded as a throw in with marchbank
Mckenna #24 traded for #58
Yeo #30 traded for #28

Point being they almost always go for unders relative to where they were originally taken. If hopper nominates one club whichever club it is pick 15-20 or equivalent will get it done the way the market works they are very unlikely to get a top 10 pick for him.

Geelong going hard for Hopper would be a strange choice from a list balance perspective IMO. Would be Caddy all over again, probably won't crack regularly in the centre bounce for at least another 2-3 years while Selwood and Danger are still in their prime, hurting his development and ignoring their list needs. Surely they are looking to win a premiership with Paddy and Joel rather than already planning for their replacement.

I agree with that actually. I would prefer a good small/med fwd to hopper personally.
