What's he worth? Don't all rush in at once ;)

Tom Morris said last night that "Jacob Hopper is absolutely gettable". Contracted for 3 more years after this one. I imagine if he was keen to pursue a trade that we'd gladly facilitate it. I feel sorry for the bloke, he was sold a lemon when he chose to come to us. I think he is still good enough to play AFL but unfortunately, we completely misread the way the game was heading when we brought him in along with Taranto whilst already having Prestia. You just can't carry more than one one-dimensional inside mid with no outside game at all. Crows and Pies were motioned as possible suitors.

I'd say if someone was interested, we'd happily pay a fair chunk of his wage for a pick in the 30s in return?

Will be for a lot less then a pick in the 30s

Given your cap space you'd likely pay most of it to try and get a decent pick in the 30s for him

The game has completely moved away from the type of player Hopper is. I'd be surprised if there were any takers. Richmond would have to do a Bowes type deal to get rid of him and unlike the GC they don't need to force him out because of the cap so they wouldn't do it.

I think he is just gonna be a depth player at any club he goes too. Can't think of a club that really needs him. I think better off at richmond where he seems to be a good leader.
If he gets traded it would have to be Richmond paying 500k of his contract, swap of picks in the 40s

Cats signed Worpel only a few months ago...

Richmond were sold a lemon as much as Hopper was.

Last year was his first full season since 2021. He just isn't that good a player and his output can be easily be replaced.

Was good-to-great 2019-2021, but the game is moving past him.

He was pretty good last year. Came 3rd in the bnf (I'm aware that we sucked).

Richmond would have probably paid most of his salary already as we have probably struggled to reach the cap floor for 2 years and he was only on $700k a year with 3 years left.

Would just keep him as depth unless he finds a club in a window that needs and suits him but it will be a nothing trade either way

Dont let Matty Clarke know Hopper is available
I’d take him for free to play WAFL covering for Graham and Dev when needed.

We need to get significantly older, and if we can replace a guy like Clay Hall’s list spot with Hopper, I really don’t know why we wouldn’t.

We’ve got so many kids and are so young, we can’t possibly take all of our 6 picks to the draft, and having 10-11 maybe 12 list spots available, we should be bringing in a couple C graders (Hopper type), and a couple B23 guys.

The optics just look so bad. Realistically you don’t turn down a guy like Hopper or Broad in our WAFL side taking the spot of delist fodder. We are mostly done bringing in 6-8+ draftees every year.

Split pick 4!?

Very different player to Dev & Graham who are defensive running mids where hopper is more a ball winning mid in the middle but he would be a good player for the eagles as the the player that would get it to Reid/Duursma and add inside depth cheap. As i mentioned he would have already been paid most of his money from Richmond and would probably sign with a new club on a 3 year $1.2 mil deal

The pick it would cost wouldnt really be a factor

Yeah the defensive running aspect is an issue but if we aren’t going to have any defensive running I’d rather have our best players going forward than having our best players having to win it at the source.

At least maximises Harley

which was shocking. He’s been delist material since he arrived. Would love if he can turn it around but he’s never really been the right type of small. He was a lead up small at Carlton
Well i think he is still contracted for next year and he will be 31 before 2028 and most likely without a club (if he doesnt get extended)

But the eagles can carry him for another year with enough players to delist this year leaving owies for the following year

Yeah contrary to all the people (me) that said pay him out last year after 1 year, you need to have sustained turnover. Someone’s gotta go each year you can’t just cull the list in 1 year.

You would probably know way more than me about your list but i would probably be able to pick 10-12 players that wont be on the eagles list in 2028 so maybe a player like Hopper for 3 years as starting mid might not be as bad as 1st thought

Looking at our list as of right now going into the offseason we have got OOC: (primary, rookie, cat b)

Hewett
Long
Flynn - UFA
Brockman
Williams (B) - RFA
Maric
Williams (J)
Hall
Johnston
Bazzo
Barnett
Cole - UFA
Cripps - UFA
Newton
Fred
Schoenberg - UFA
Macrae - UFA
Murdock

Champion
Miles-Wrency

Offer Maric and Jack Williams as trade bait to other clubs

Leaving us with, in my opinion, the players departing the club

1 of Flynn or Bailey Williams + Barnett
1 of Schoenberg or Yeo depending on Yeo's health and retirement decision
Johnston
Cole
Hall
Macrae
Miles-Wrency
Cripps
Brockman
Maric
Jack Williams

This leaves us roughly with 9-10 primary list spots, 1-2 rookie list spots, 2 cat B list spots (including new extra indigenous list spot).
Just this offseason it’s possible we have up to 13 spots across all 3 types of list spot
