More info on Jacob Surjan:
Despite some excellent form when on the park in 2012, Jacob was delisted at the end of the season. A strong fan favourite, 2012 was yet another season in which Jacob had to miss near half the season through injury. His first half of the season was excellent, making the best players in 9 out of the first 11 matches. He was rewarded with this form by becoming the inaugural Toots Hibbert Best Team Man – a fantastic effort considering he missed 9 matches. Jacob leaves having played 121 AFL, 30 SANFL and 3 SANFL reserves matches whilst on Port Adelaide's list.

Highlight Reel:

Black diamond, what excellent work. There are things there that I never knew about Surj. How did you manage to get that depth of information ?
A great read. :)

Fortunately this player had a really good write up on Wikipedia, many of the other player write ups are very poor - hopefully in the future we can get a few good stories on other players to make them kind of the same.

10 minutes with Jacob Surjan (from Port website).

What is your most memorable game?
I’d say probably my first league game with South Fremantle back in WA. It was Friday night football with 12,000 people packed into Fremantle Oval and I kicked the first goal of the game on Phil Read, who played with Melbourne last season. It was pretty special because I played junior footy for South Fremantle my entire life.

Then there was also my first AFL game in 2004.

I don’t have just one memorable game – there’s a whole heap, but the win over Freo in round one this season was definitely a highlight.

Who would you have on your table at the Brownlow Medal count?
I’d probably have to take my girlfriend and my mother and I’m sure my Dad would like to go. But it would be nice just to get invited to the Brownlow!

Do you have any pre-game superstitions?
I always wear red jocks. Apparently red keeps the devil away. I also like to get to the game about two hours beforehand and listen to my music. I usually play a bit of heavy metal to get me fired up.

Which teammates do you find the most annoying?
Brett Ebert and Troy Chaplin. Brett’s got a big head that gets in the way.

What’s the ringtone on your mobile phone?

It’s ‘Rebel Yell’ by Billy Idol. He’s one of my ‘idols’, you could say.

What’s your trademark dish in the kitchen?
I don’t mind cooking a few different things like lasagna or stir-fry. I also enjoy cooking up a roast. Roasts are always good.

Where would we find you on your day off?
The boys usually come into the club, so you’d probably find me there in the morning and then in the city shopping or having a coffee and relaxing.

What’s something you’re always being reminded to do?
Keep the house clean. To always sweep and mop the floors and do the dishes and the washing. Mum likes the house to be tidy when she comes to visit, but my girlfriend comes over and helps me with that too.

What would you be if you weren’t an AFL footballer?
I used to love surfing or I wouldn’t mind being a personal trainer and owning a gym or something like that. I might even be living off of mum and dad.

If you could take one skill from another player, what would it be?
He’s a past player now but probably Stewie Dew’s kick. I’d love to be able to kick a goal from 70 metres out like he could with that left boot.

Note I thought I might expand the story as I keep finding the stories are no sooner here and then deleted from the various AFL websites, bd

Surj was interviewed on 6PR tonight by Brad Hardie and Karl Langdon. Pretty short segment and interrupted by the Andrew Symonds catch (they were broadcasting from the WACA) at one stage. Lots of the usual cliches - can't wait to get back into it, giving the young blokes a chance, etc. Luckily they didn't dwell on the 2007 GF result.

Surj reckons that Tredders is looking really trim - in the best shape since the premiership year.

He said that Choco has made a couple of changes to the game plan. The 6PR guys tried to get him to elaborate - Hardie asking if they'll be concentrating on holding onto the ball more. Surj said "yeah sort of" and then started to say that there would be some changes to the forward set-up, but this is when the Symonds catch was taken at the WACA :D After things settled down again Surj talked about some of the off field things happening at Port - eg the teaching stuff Choco is doing wit the players, but he wasn't given the chance to explain what that involved.

Being a WA boy, 6PR intend catching up with Surj through the year so I'll report what I hear from him.

Is his future at Alberton safe with Thomas and Lower coming in? he fell out of favour mid season and 2008 was down on his 2007 impact overall.

There's a lot of debate on this. I think he's easy trade bait but with thomson, bentley and krak all supposedly wanting out for whatever reason, he may be on our list a little longer. Unless a worthy trade can be found, he'll be at port next year, after all, he is contracted for next year.

Well what if he was involved in a deal that resulted in Andrew Lovett at Port Adelaide? draft picks may be involved as well, but it gives a bit of zip and life into the tough Port midfield (along with Rodan of course) and gives essendon a tough small defender, which is definitely required so that blokes like Winderlich and Houli aren't wasted playing stopper jobs

As good as lovett is, i don't think we're screaming out for a player of his type, especially when we have pearce who on his day is a great player. Plus choco has little interest in players with laziness issues.

If we do trade surjan out, it would be for a required player or a second round pick. While he isn't a superstar, he is a solid player with 50+ games under his belt.

Well what does Port Adelaide need? I'd love to see this guy in the red and black, he is exactly what we need in defense.

A nice draft pick would get the job done, probably late 20's would be about right in this draft. I'm not too familiar with essendon's list but after a quick look i doubt there's any player there that would suit us in an even trade for surjan.

Rumblings starting to appear at Dockers about getting surjan as part of the carr deal. Luckily surj has another year under contract.

Highly thought of is surjan at not only at the Dons but also at Freo.

Notes:
2011 was Jacobs worst season at AFL level since his 2nd year in 2005. He went from the clubs premier small defender to someone that struggled to get a game for much of the year. He missed a large chunk at the end of 2010 and reports said that he showed up to pre season over his playing weight. He started the year in the SANFL but came into the side for the Showdown against Adelaide in Round 4. Playing as a small forward, he kicked a goal and shut Johncock out of the game in a near best on ground effort before being subbed off in the third quarter.

He made the best players again the next week when he kicked 2 goals from 16 disposals, but was dropped two weeks later. After some solid SANFL form he came into the side against Carlton but was well beaten by Chris Yarran and was dropped the next week.

His SANFL form over the next month was excellent and he came back into the side in Round 21 against Hawthorn. His form for the rest of the year was poor, though he did make the best players against the Bulldogs in Round 22.

At his best, Surj is a fan favourite and one of the key components to the defence. If fit, his vigour and passion will be a welcome addition back into the side for 2012.

Surjan talks about his road to redemption after a terrible 2011

Surjan Surging Into Shape

PORT Adelaide defender Jacob Surjan has admitted he questioned his position at the Power during a 12-week period in 2011 when he played just one AFL game.

Despite being a member of the club's leadership group last year, Surjan spent the vast majority of the season in the SANFL.

Sounds like Surj has had enough. Bit like Roger James who wanted to hang on a bit longer but the body was not up to it.

Surjan close to retiring

PORT Adelaide defender Jacob Surjan is believed to be close to calling time on his SANFL career.
It is understood the 27-year-old is considering his playing future but Magpies officials were unavailable for comment last night.
Surjan close to retiring

Clearly the club made the best call on his situation.
