Does this bloke have a genuine claim to be labelled the best small stopper in the business?

I watched him destroy Eddie Betts yesterday, who was in good form heading into the game with hauls of 3 (v Collingwood) and 5 goals (v St Kilda) in the past fortnight, and have seen him blanket numerous damaging small forwards, with names such as Lecras, Rioli, Porplyzia and Milne in his list of scalps, among others of course. The Port fans rate him highly but he seems to be widely unknown outside of that (apart from the stretcher incident of course), but I'd definitely say that he is a bloke who is long overdue for some recognition :thumbsu:

Absolute Gun... I was reading through the game threads on Port's board during last week to see what they propose to do against Betts + 2... and they were all really confident that Surjan would beat Eddie... I thought to myself they are underrating Betts.... but it turned out I was underrating Surjan... gun player

Was our best player last year by a fair way IMO, should have been AA but instead we have Goodwin with a spot on the HBF after a half decent year and Surj isn't even considered, go figure.

I may be biased because he is my cousin, but he is an incredibly disciplined player. Does all of the hard stuff and happily foregoes easy posessions. He ran with Daniel Kerr in the midfield a few years back when Kerr was in career best form and took him out of the game completely at Subiaco.

He is more skillful than he may be given credit for too. Slotted a goal from the forward pocket at Fremantle oval with his first kick at WAFL level playing on Phil Read.

Hopefully Ballantynes kicks his arse when he plays us though ! :)

It's well documented that I lead the Port Adelaide Jacob Surjan fan club brigade and it's about time he got his recognition. It's only fair that I comment in this thread.

Surj showed me all the signs of being a very good player back in 2006 and was probably underrated by Port Adelaide people across 2006 and 2007. Mark Williams challenged him to a bit of soul searching after an average 2008 and he exploded in 2009. He's the guy you know will stand up week in week out no matter whether Port Adelaide is losing or winning.

The problem small forwards have when Surj plays on them is he has the speed to go with the genuine pacey forwards but he also has the body strength to beat tougher small forwards in physical contests. There's only one guy who can lay claim to beating him head to head and that would be Paul Chapman and that would be marginal at best.

The query over his game was his disposal before 2009 but since then it's improved out of sight especially his kicking under pressure. He does everything you'd want out of a defender and often sacrifices his own personal game for the good of the side.

Good thread Lacey. It's about time he started to get the recognition he deserves because his body of work has earned him that right.

Any opportunity to denigrate a Crow eh? Why don't you have a go at your own club who had Tredrea as your B&F ahead of him last year... As for Surjan, is absolutely an under rated player who always performs well. Any club would want someone of his calibre.

Find me a less worthy player picked in the backline of the 2009 AA team and I'll rip into them instead.

Go start your Port v Crows shitfest on the bay instead thanks.

we love the doctor, on and off the field he seems like an excellent person to have around

Great bloke, fine player, does the job asked of him.

Sounds like the kind of player any club would want.

Not too shabby for pick 10 in the 2004 Pre-Season Draft

Great player, possible AA.

Other teams coaches would not under rate him thats for sure.

I remember him taking Lecca to the cleaners last year.. The bastard :p

Quality player.

Slightly off-topic, but I wouldn't let Betts' 3 goals against Collingwood fool you. He was largely inneffectual for most of the game, and just managed to cash in on other's hard work a few times.

Anyway, full credit to Surjan. He'd be largely unknown to the average footy viewer I'd imagine (especially outside of SA), but he does a sterling job every week for the Power, fearlessly leading by example.

Watched him in the U18's carnival (2003 I think...same year as Cooney)
The signs of what sort of player he is, were there then. Amased me that he was missed in the draft and ended up being selected by Alan Stewart in the PSD.

Every club needs these types because nothing happens until they cause a turnover. Players like Surjan make 30/70 contests 50/50 and thats why I love them. That will to compete is a wonderful quality.

The Surjan type player stands out more when the chips are down because they battle on and more often than not, beat their opponents even when their team is losing. He is consistent, disciplined and reliable. At most Clubs they are the spiritual leaders of the teams(eg.Campbell Brown). Surjan has taken this batton over from our Michael Wilson.

Drafting is an inexact science and more and more clubs appear to be mining gold through the rookie and pre-season drafts. Goes to show that rate of development and assessment of a player can be grossly underestimated.
