Starting to receive some kudos after his rocky start.

Port Adelaide to play Ben Jacobs on wing against Fremantle

PORT Adelaide is set to continue its experiment of playing Ben Jacobs on a wing against Fremantle.

A first-round draft pick, Jacobs has predominantly been used as a small defender - who takes the kick-ins - during his 18-game AFL career. But the 20-year-old has impressed playing further up the field in the past fortnight, chalking up 24 disposals and five clearances against Richmond on Sunday.

...

Jacobs exploded during Port's belated third-term resurgence against the Tigers, registering 11 disposals for the quarter. And after tightening up his defensive action, he's poised to settle down near the centre square.

He certainly seems to know how to find the ball. Like all youngsters he will take a few seasons to find the consistency... but he's going to turn out good IMO.

Hahaha its "experiment".

Blind Freddy could see it, and the supporters have been calling out for it since last year - get him out of the goddamn backlines. THAT was the experiment and it was a failure.

Well done to him though, great game on Sunday.

The experiment begins!

Primus you mad man indeed.

I know its been a rocky start, but much of it to me has seemed to be him putting too much pressure on himself.

On a side note, I had Andrew Jarman take me for footy training last night, and media persona aside (he was in serious mood), he was excellent, really surprised me.

One comment he made about how he used to train was that he was very hard on himself for making skill errors. He thinks skills beat structure, and seems to thinks clubs aren't putting enough emphasis on teaching the skills. I thought that rang true for us.

One exercise we were doing basically involved every sort of kick you would want to use, switch, kick up the line to straight up target, etc, but in particular the kick into space to a player moving forward through the midfield (from defense). In describing the kicks and their importance he mentioned that kick especially as a kick that creates drive, and mentioned it as a kick that he thought was letting port down badly.

The entire training was based around hard running and hitting up the kicks correctly.

I mention this because everything I had read of Jacobs (hard on himself, practising in the backyard etc) made me think he's the sort of guy that would soak up skills training and improve from it.

Thank god!! I havent at all been a supporter oif him thus far but that was mainly due to him, in my eyes, not being a defenders bum hole!
But going into the middle or the wing he looks much better! Maybe just the confidence of knowing what hes doing helped? instead of worrying about how to play out of position.
Good luck to him this weekend, i hope he cementes his spot with a cracker game on the wing. Or they even "experiment" more and heaven forbid chuck him in the centre square!!!

At the risk of stating the extremely obvious, our midfield don't find enough of the ball, which again pointing out the obvious results in less inside 50s.

Every week when I look at the disposal stats after our losses and usually its Kane Cornes in the top 3 then a whole raft of the opposition players (usually around 5) before the next Port mids (usually Boak or Hartlett at around 19-22 possessions).

Jacobs was a prolific ball finder in junior footy. We need ball winners around the middle. The question is over his foot skills, if he develops into a Scott Thompson accumulator type (with a slight question over footskills), then we will be well on our way to improving.

In summary, let the small defenders be small defenders (Surjan, Logan, Pittard, O'Shea) and defend and ball winners (Jacobs, Kane) win the ball.

Derp.

I've never doubted this kid.

He has it all and is only just beginning....

You have been a great believer. He iwll come good, we need some more Spud to I reckon and Moore and Pittard and Newton :)

Keep going Benny

When did O'shea become a small defender at 192cm?

Because of his mobility and speed he plays on the smalls, but I see your point, I like him on the wing tbh with Benny

Please leave him up the field. Please please please.

Apparently we're experimenting with Alipate Carlile in the backlines this week. Hope it works out.

yeah ... nahh!

He's a true modern day "utility" ... can take a small or medium sized forward, but can also push up the ground through the middle and even play up forward.

On Jacob's ... let's not forget he is a baby - just like a host of our other kids and to some extent even Hartlett. Dane Swan was considered pretty average for about his first 4-5 years (in and out of the senior team). It took him that long (something like after 50 odd games) to really have a break through and consistent season.

Are we too demanding on our current crop of youngsters ??

I think Primus had little option but to play him through defense in his first handful of games and now is the right time to push him up the ground.
Wingard for example will have the same development - but more likely playing up forward to start with (due to his smaller frame) - before he is ready for a more permanent midfield role.

You can't develop these kids in the middle of the ground - most will be completely lost - and at the same time say we as a team are not getting enough of the ball in the middle.

People do realise that Jacobs played predominantly as a defender (or backline quarterback) in the U18s etc dont they?

He played a loose role in defence akin to a Brett Deledio up until this year, not a shutdown defender.

We've played him as a shutdown defender.

Get a grip, man.
You can't play essentially a first year player as a loose role in defence. It was and still is much better for his development to have him as a run-with defender that can peel off ... and will now be spending more time up the ground as it has turned out (which was probably the plan from the start).

Get a grip? I wasn't saying we'd throw him into that role straight away. I was saying play him up the goddamn ground where he didn't have the pressure of having to stop another player, thereby draining his confidence and leading to unforced errors.

WHICH GUESS WHAT, IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.

Hey, I guess I should get a grip. Why in the hell would I want a player who was drafted due to his ball-winning ability (coming off 35 and 40 possession performances in the juniors) to play... near the ball, instead of focussing on stopping another player from getting it? I must be an idiot!

Ahhh ... that's the impression I got.

If the defensive unit was not contending with massive amounts of I50 ball coming in ... we probably would not be having this discussion. That has def contributed to compounding the errors that he has made.

It was always going to happen. Infact, he has already cameod up the ground and in the middle (with not much impact at all [to the point where many were calling for his head!]). So it was always a matter of all things coming together, like his confidence and a few games under his belt.

But hey, perhaps we should have stuck a 12-game player in the middle of the ground against ... St Kilda?, Essendon?, Collingwood?, Sydney? ... which one and what would that have done for his confidence?

Luke Parker for Sydney has less than 20, Collingwood had a few rotate through there with less than 10 games, there is opportunity in every game to have young midfielders play midfield without destroying them.

Yep. Likewise, from what I've seen of Wingard (acknowledging the knocks he took in the Showdown), there are opportunities to play him around the ball as well, at least in bursts each quarter.

Our midfield needs whatever spark it can get.

I thought Jacobs was terrific last weekend and am really hopeful it is only a sign of things to come.

If we can walk away from this year knowing that he can really play, that will be one significant positive to take out of 2012.

So happy for Benny. I have a love for someone with the same name as me, but I really hope he's in our best this week. Playing in the middle he gives himself every chance. I want him to sail one through from 55 and us to realise that he has a beautiful leg on him
