That story was killed , when clearly there was a drug issue in the AFL over a decade ago .

One problem with your analogy... We aren't the AFL's darlings in Hawthorn, we're the bottom feeding runt of the litter that gets kicked to the side regardless of how much effort we put in to being positive & progressive.

This is yet another example of that. I'm sick of it. It doesn't happen to other clubs with the frequency that it happens to us. Something's got to give, surely....

The real damage was done by us entering the trade for a pick we otherwise would not have. Saving on salary mean nothing, we need to pay min cap anyway. The AFL can give us a priority pick at pick 5 and allow us to keep or send Carlisle to PSD. ITS their ****ed system and they control the market so they can fix it. So sick of getting shafted. Better hope the Wallabies don't win or a lot of people might just have pissed too many people off with its unequal bullshit.

Except the AFLPA doesn't have any interest in club on field performance as long as it isn't an OH&S issue for their members. If the AFLPA had problems with clubs sucking on the field and not rebuilding properly then why have they done nothing about the shambles that has been the Dees?

I don't buy this woe is us stuff at all. It's so defeatist and ignores any of the myriad of positive indications that has surrounded the club in the last few years (many with the help or support of the AFL).

How about the funding the AFL is giving us for Moorabbin? Or the great fixture we get next year with the Pride game, Maddies match and the 66 anniversary. What about Finnis? What about the $ guarantees that the AFL gives us that stops us going under? What about us making a bunch of money from NZ with the high probability that we'll be back there in 2018.

The AFL has no intention on letting us fail and any talk of them wanting to keep us small is tin foil hat conspiracy bullshit.

Agree with all of the above. And you know what the last piece in our jigsaw puzzle is now? Performances improving on the field. And Jake Carlisle at his best is exactly what we need as a team going forward for our performances on the field. Reacting to this circus that is being whipped up is not looking at the bigger picture which is how Jake will play week in week out for years.

Let's forget about all the off field stuff and just ensure he pays us back ten-fold on the field.

This story has largely blown over as expected (pun semi intended).

Hopefully it doesn't play out in the media anymore, but some sort of recompense is dished out behind doors.

I'm just not sure who the aflpa is accountable to though, apart from its members. I guess similar to other unions...

While getting compensated by the AFL would be great & hopefully we may get another young gun. Personally I would get more satisfaction out of Jake staying out of trouble & having an absolutely break out year, with us winning between 10-12 games. Imagine how much better it will feel, as we salute those so called expert journalists with our raised index finger. Should start being positive now & carry it on through the season, with our heads held high. For we are StKilda.
 
Why is a newly traded defender doing a line in his own hotel room overseas bigger news than the captain of the club favoured to win a premiership drink driving on the eve of finals?

I get the feeling it's this real Aussie culture when it comes to drinking, "ah she'll be right mate" and from some corners there was actually sympathy for Hodge. Sympathy! Oh, he only had a few. He was playing poker! Just a quiet weeknight!

There's a stigma attached to illicit drugs. The stigma is well placed in my view, and it keeps a lot of Australians away from these drugs. It's a good thing.

BUT let's get real for a second. All studies into drink driving show the same thing. Once you have started drinking, your driving ability and decision making deteriorates. Drink driving is blatantly unsafe to yourself, those in your car and every other road user. It scares the shit out of me that I could be sharing the road with people over the limit. Get a taxi, uber, train, bike, walk, lift, stay the night FFS.

Illegal drugs in general also effect many many people, but this isolated incident of one line inside an overseas hotel room is only having an impact on Jake Carlisle.

Both of course have wider implications. Both are role models and have set a poor example to the community and children following the sport. One was the captain of a team on their way to a premiership, a 3-time premiership player at the time and a 2-time Norm Smith medalist.

Both acts were illegal.

So I can't for the life of me understand the coverage of the Carlisle incident in comparison to the Hodge incident.

The AFL commission should send a message to AFLPA board and somone at aflpa needs to go.

Eddie is right, how would he have felt, had it been Treloar.

What if a player was doing PEDs? Would AFLPA do the same?

All those saying it doesn't matter because on field he'll be a gun for the next eight years - I think you're not factoring in the people-are-people-not-robots factor. There's no doubt this damages the trust relationship between Carlisle and the rest of the team. Our players are highly invested in our club, and Jake has lied to that which they all love. I suspect he'll find it hard to make friends. Furthermore, Carlisle has a history of blaming everyone else but himself. If the other players don't like him, I can see him saying it's a problem with them, not him, and that will only add to the tension.

I'm betting he'll be gone within the next 2 years, probably traded out for nicks. He won't want to be there, and nobody else will, either.

Worked out pretty well when you think about it. We now have a gun CHB for well below market rates now a new contract has been drawn up. Salary cap space is still plentiful to target a couple of gun mids.

Couldn't agree any more with this. It's being seriously overlooked.

The value of a high pick is so massively more than hundreds of thousands of dollars when you are struggling to meet the cap floor. The money is more or less irrelevant. Losing a top 5 pick (or even the value of being able to trade that pick) is what really stings.

Look at how many clubs benefited from trading into the top end of the draft. Had Carlisle been out of the picture we very well may have been able to trade up to pick 3 and grab Parish (like Melbourne did).

Lots of supposition there PS. Yes Carlisle lied, but lets hear the full context.

We have been told that the AFPLA and McConville only had a still. Considering Carlisle is so dumb he didn't know that SnapChat could be replayed, he may have thought it was just BS and said it wasn't him.

Or he could have panicked like most of us would have and denied it.

Look, I think Carlisle is a goose and an idiot and really has effed up BIG TIME, but I don't know how long the players will hold a grudge. Players aren't robots, but once they start training then, playing and then realise that Carlisle want to play with the Saints and they start WINNING, things will turn around.

Akermanis was hated, absolutely hated by his Brisbane teammates. Didn't stop them winning multiple flags. Same with Scarlett at Geelong.

Carlisle will be OK in the long run. He has a huge point to prove and a equally big debt to pay back to his new club. The leadership in our club and players will ensure that he gets a huge boot up the arse, then they will get around him, because they know he can play and will benefit the team.
