He is so clean picking the ball up, has great vision and his disposal is fantastic. Basically when we ordered Ned McHenry and/or Chayce Jones 5 years ago this is who we wanted to turn up.

Disappointingly Soligo has missed out on getting a Rising Star Award this year.

The Judges have erred!

Definitely stiff, but O'Driscoll was always a chance. Impactful game and played well earlier in the season before injury, and again since he's come back. Soligo should've gotten it the week Hollands did.

Soligo never had a single standout game this season to earn a nomination, that's why he didn't get one.

Steady 14 touches a game and solid development doesn't get you nominations, singular flashy games gets you nominations.

Unless you're Lachie Sholl, when 30 and 2 goals, getting you the 3 brownlow votes, doesn't get you the nom.

Not sure what’s funny Mutineer i would have thought this assessment is pretty spot on.
He had one game with 2 goals but only got 10 touches.
It’s not a slight on jake at all.

16 touches a game in his last 14 games but yeah, it’s a decent point

Still, there were two or three weeks where he was pretty unlucky, as probably the 2nd best eligible player of that week

Yeah and coaches votes against the Saints would indicate he had a pretty good game.

And since when have you been the big footy cop on the beat?
I was genuinely curious as to what you found funny.
I’d suggest he had a handful of pretty good games, but as NTRabbit said, generally it takes a standout/flashy game to get a nomination.
19 disposals and no goals I wouldn’t call a standout/flashy game.

Rising Star nominations are a nice little encouragement award for the player but are really meaningless in the grand scheme. There are always your 2-3 favourites who are the only chance of winning and the rest are just names out of a hat for who played well or who played well the other week but we couldn't nominate them.

Great for the kids' recognition, but if he's a legit gun in 4 years we won't be too worried.

Steady 14 touches? He averaged about 18 a game in his last 11 games, including 4 games with 20+

The value of Soligo isn't the number of possessions he gets anyway, it's the way he's able to hit targets. 15 quality touches is worth more than 20 average touches.

For a first-year player he's had a fantastic year.
I don’t think anyones disputing that.

He’s a ripper, but the rabbit is right, generally it’s after a standout game or if there isn’t a standout game they pull out the body of work bullshit

Not worth a rising star nomination.
Therefore not worthy of any victorian club trying to recruit him.

Therefore cheaper on the salary cap.
Good for the club.

Strangely, had Soligo been nominated he more than likely would have finished in the top 3 as they will look at the player's entire season more closely and I'll dare say they will see more than just "solid" development while playing only 70-75% TOG as a first year player for a majority of the season.

Yes, I agree. I don't think he was hard done by in any round this year by being overlooked, there was always someone else with a better game than him. But I also think that just looking at his average disposals misses the point.

Why is it so bad that he had a solid year of development in the AFL side? What's wrong with admitting that?

He didn't take the competition by storm, he didn't star, he's not in the running for any non-club awards. He spent the second half of the season developing his craft at the level without looking lost or out of place, while showing promising signs of where he is going - that's a pretty solid start for a first year player.

Getting a Rising Star nomination is a nice reward for effort but the award itself is a bit of a joke given past winners include Jaiydn Stephenson, Lewis Taylor and Rhys Palmer

Absolutely. If he can avoid the second year blues, he to my eye looks like a similar player to Kane Johnson in that he is a smooth mover, uses the ball really well and is tough..a bit o class is this lad

For me, it's not only the skill but more so the vision he has and ability to assess quickly what the best option is and the ability to execute under pressure.

Kid is a future A Grader.

Work on the tank so he can move from 60-65% TOG to 70 -75% and move up to the 25-30 possessions a game, being a first choice midfielder.

Needs to push Keays out of midfield rotation.
