Certainly better than picking Shannon Cox over Kurt Tippett - ouch, Derek Hine will never forgive himself for that one
To be very fair to Derek Hine, when Shannon Cox arrived at Collingwood he had all the makings of a very good footballer and he showed a lot in some of his games, the big problem with Shannon was that he considered he could be a 200 game elite player by living the good life and not doing the hard training work to be a top line player – surely all of us remember a year or so back when he arrived for the 1st day of the new year’s training ‘As fat as a PIG’ and was delisted a week or so later – not Derek’s fault he had an undetectable lazy streak when he interviewed him.

Can't Remember what they where but they where Season Ending ones.

Think 1 was a Broken Arm I think

Hardly surprising the lad gets injured given all that falling out of the sky from a great height.

It wouldn't be a shock to anyone here but in the Herald Sun review of the game Jamie got 63 ranking points in the last quarter, second only to Dean Cox.:)

So basically when the game was on the line he was our most effective player, not bad for a kid playing his 4th game.:thumbsu:

I mentioned on another post, and a few others have mentioned it in this one. 4 or 5 crucial marks in the last quarter by Elliott really helped get us over the line. He has pace, hands like cement, and best of all, he tackles to hurt. On the evidence of the last quarter alone, I'd give him as many games as possible for the rest of the season. Top of the table clash, game on the line, Jamie steps up and makes a name for himself. Well done buddy, I'll be getting your new number on my back next season

^ Thanks Presti.

So if Elliot was pre listed by GWS as a previously non drafted player, he mustn't have shown much as a junior and presumably is now not "bottom aged". A later developer, I guess. Interesting, as he has a touch of class about him now, for sure. Makes you wonder how many other gems there are in the VFL etc. who didn't "shine" at the right moment.

Could of been something as simple as a height issue.

Just seems a really smart footballer too. That kick to Cloke. Just put it out in space for Cloke to run onto. Petty!

I also think it's very important for our club going forward that he becomes a quality player and he looks to be the pick of our litter from post 2011.

He has the tools to become pure quality.

We haven't had access to any early picks since 2008 and we've traded/drafted for experienced quality players ala Jolly, Ball, Krak, Tarrant, Clarke etc. so we have had to find other avenues to find young diamonds in the rough.

Will hold us in better stead if someone like a Paine or Williams can join him.

I'm still holding out hope that Josh Thomas comes good too.

He was quite outstanding I thought. That last quarter he really stood up in the heat of the battle.

As Matty said earlier, you could see in that NAB game against Adelaide that the kid just has it and belongs at this level. Looks a real gem.

Marley and Elliot: Fantastic! Love Marley's pace, aggression at the contest and ability to find the ball, his pace is really important. Elliot, very honest game, has some weapons, pace, overhead ability, seems cool under pressure and showed he can be a big occasion player. Early days but I think we have to absolute Bewdys in these two kids.

Give the guy a break. Before writing his biography, try interviewing him first. He wanted to stay in WA with his family. The WAFL tried to get him to come to Perth again but he said no. He likes living in the country. Undetectable lazy streak and considered himself to be a 200 game player?? Where did you invent those?

And Elliot has been very good but yesterday was excellent. I'm not sure if we can keep fitting these small guys in but I suppose we can if they play like Elliot and Blair

It wasn't so much the marks that impressed me (Although the hanger from third in was great), but the context under which they were taken.

Amazing.

We're talking contested grabs in a super high pressure finals like situation.

I've watched the kid pretty closely and the way he wheels around onto his right is in a tight and accelerating turn is power packed with intent, he can be deadly from the left forward flank. His marking is something else, wonderful hands and has proven his pressure capabilities - so far, it's early days guys - but so far - NICE.

As much as I agree with the great marking and the clutch times he took those marks, I am not getting too far ahead with this kid. He looks like an excellent prospect, but we need him to be a goalkicker, and he did have a couple of set shots that were quite poorly tacken. I will preface this by saying that even the best kicks stuff up, and he could've been nervous, but I think I want to see him nail a 45 metre set shot before I jump on the love wagon.
I do agree with someone who said his kick to Cloke was brilliant, so he looks to have the decision making ability, I just hope he has the kicking skills close to that of a Fasolo.
Still, there is nothing to suggest with further development and a bigger tank he couldn't play further up the field. We know he has an ability that could become elite and there aren't too many players in their 4th game you can say that about.

What is being referred to is Hine said on "the Club" the other week that not picking Tippett in the Rookie draft the year before he was drafted was his biggest regret. Said his choice came down to Shannon Cox or Tippett. Tippett went 2nd round the next season.

So its not one of those ones where people looked at who was picked up in a draft after player X e.g Gibbs when you could have had Selwood, but a guenuine choice Hine came to between Cox v Tippett.
So Hine regrets making the same decision as everyone else.

No doubt there are a few misses. He's got a fair few right in the last 5 years. Pendlebury at 5 was inspired. Rebuilding the spine in 1 draft in 2006 was remarkable.Elliot certainly looks a good get.

Given we have had a few high finishes and expect a few more in coming years getting the likes of Elliot is a real bonus. It's hard to get players that can contribute in the first year at the best of times let alone when you finish top 4. If Elliot, Payne and Williams end up solid senior players this will prove a very good draft in the circumstances. If Yagmoore settles and becomes a senior player (long way to go) then we can all sing Hine's praises for the next decade becuase the bulk of the team over that time will be based on his judgements.

i remember Elliott saying he based his game on James Hird, the kid wasnt lying and im not saying he will be or anything but his hands and lead up work and control of the ball when it hits the deck is like Hirdy.
I thought he was a smart arse saying that as well haha
