Thoughts? ... has the height .. the 'mongrel' and courage to take some crucial posessions in the crunch games, frawley and warnock seem to be performing consistently well ... Obvious we need a bit more ammo in the fwd line and thought this would be a good start to re-inventing the veteran. Kicking for goal would be the question mark but seems disiplined enough to work on it.

debate!

I've always been against this idea when it's been raised but now I'm thinking slightly differently. With our back 6 so settled, why not? It'd probably be Rivers in Martin out.

This has Supermercado wet dream written all over it.

Circa start of the year you're right, but it doesn't seem entirely necessary at the moment. Talk to me again when we're struggling up front (probably in about two weeks).

Why change a winning formula?

Bate was excellent as a pseudo-CHF on Saturday night, and I thought Martin was good in his first full game up forward. He didn't dominate but he showed he has good hands and made a contest every time.

I can't see how either Rivers or Morton are getting back into this team. Although going by our injury record over the last few years, our whole midfield will be on the sidelines by round 8.

Morton is an automatic selection when fit regardless of whether we are winning or not.

Don't think he'd offer too much that isn't already being covered by our 'mobile' forward line. Nothing against him, but I think the main ingredient we need up forward is height, and also I reckon River's is in his element down back.

I reckon Rivers could fit into the back line, pushing Bruce/Bartram further up the ground. As good as our midfield is going at the moment, at some point in time we're gonna have to rotate some players in an out of it :)

Morton could slot in nicely up forward (in a similar role to what Dunn is doing at the moment until he gets more size about him)

lock thread before little stinga comes in and hurls abuse at how Rivers is not even up to VFL standard

As Dez mentioned, Morton is an automatic selection. His ability, coupled with his versatility, demands it.

Rivers isn't such a certainty though, and with the team performing well, I'm not necessarily sure I'd be in a rush to get him back into the side.

I don't mind the idea of him going forward, but I think his strength is reading the play and he can use that to his advantage in defence more so than up forward. Having said that, he is a better footballer than Dunn, so perhaps it would be worth a go anyway.

We'll see what happens, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him spend some more time in the VFL.

I don't think our current forward line set-up is going to get us anywhere long term. The obvious inclusions in it are Watts (when he is ready) and Jurrah. Then you Aussie, Jetta, Maric, and now Bail all pushing for the small forward spot. I think Aussie will be the best genuine small forward out of them, but the others add more around the ground than Aussie. Add that to the Medium sized mobile forwards we have in Green, Bate, and Petterd, then all of sudden the front 6 looks like a formidible outfit. There isn't room for Garland, Rivers, and Grimes in the backline at the same time IMO. So as far as Rivers as a permanent option forward goes I just can't see it. I remember at the start of '09 Bailey talking about Garland being used as a swing player, either forward or back, and even going onto the wing, so if Garland stays fit, and that role still exists (which I think is Morton's role, but who knows what the plans are there) then Rivers slots back in comfortably to the backline, but it will be an interesting one to see how it plays out.

Out of the players we have out at the moment, Jurrah and Morton are walk up starts. Aussie could be but needs to have some extended good form for Casey IMO as you don't want him straight back in only to do a hammy.

Morton would kick Dunn out and play that wing/forward option, and Jurrah goes deep forward.

Garland > Rivers IMO. Garland will only keep getting better with more games.
